View Full Version : Actors that portray great villains
Janice 01-09-2004, 06:59 PM Some old-timers are:
Boris Karloff
Lon Chaney Jr.
Bella Lugosi
Lee Marvin
Richard Widmark
and....
Rutger Hauer
Robert DeNiro
Anthony Hopkins
John Malkovich
Michael Madsen
Joe Pesci
Does anyone know the actor who played the menacing Ramrod in an 80s movie?
*MIBabe03* 01-09-2004, 07:58 PM Two words- Alan Rickman! He was a great villan in the movie "Die Hard."
Short Circus 01-09-2004, 08:24 PM Christopher Walken
Gary Oldman
Joaquin Phoenix's inwardly hurt but outwardly cruel turn in Gladiator was brilliant :clap
...and I agree with Rutger Hauer as well *shivers* he's mean
Janice 01-09-2004, 08:29 PM The late JT Walsh played a good villain. We need some female villains too.

The name didn't ring a bell, so I looked him up. You're so right, he played a good meany.
*MIBabe03* 01-09-2004, 08:37 PM Thanks for the information, Janice.

Brian 01-09-2004, 08:44 PM Tia Carrere in True Lies.
Brian 01-09-2004, 08:45 PM I haven't seen the movie but I'd imagine Kristanna Loken was good in T3.
*MIBabe03* 01-09-2004, 08:45 PM Bonnie Bedelia in Presumed Innocent. She was a whacked out psycho in that one.
Short Circus 01-09-2004, 08:54 PM Eeeeek, it's Heddy!!

Dean Winchester 01-10-2004, 06:28 PM Ray Liotta makes a good creep in movies, think Something Wild, Hannibal and Unlawful Entry
DianeChambers87 01-10-2004, 07:32 PM Kathleen Turner makes a good villaness- Body Heat, Prizzi's Honor, Baby Geniuses, A simple wish... (i know I know those last two movie's are a disgrace...but she was still great in them, Hey she can't help if the scripts were awful)
Danny DeVito in batman
Glenn Close in Fatal attraction
and somebody help me out on this one the voice of the actress who played malificent (ruler of disney villians)
Christopher Lloyd was scary in who framed roger rabbit?
Jack Nicholsen
Mr. Stefani 01-10-2004, 07:34 PM Angelina Jolie and Mark Wahlberg play good villans.
Kiefer Sutherland in "An Eye for an Eye" really freaked me out. I was so afraid of/disgusted by him that for the longest time I couldn't see him in anything else.
Glenn Close and Jack Nicholson will always be my favorites, though I like Alan Rickman in pretty much anything he does.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken were also great in "Batman Returns," alongside Danny DE Vito.
Glenn Close was also great in "101 Dalmations"... surprisingly.
webuster 01-11-2004, 02:03 PM Tim Curry never fails at playing a great villain. I wish they'd put him in a Harry Potter film- it'd get me to watch the films with some enthusiasm. He's great at being funny too- he's probably one of few big british actors not in Harry Potter.
John Lithgow- I've only seen him as a villain in Santa Claus the movie, and in a episode of third rock where he played an evil version of dick- I haven't seen many of lithgow's more sinister films, but he's a great villain.
Glenn Close- one of the few women that are great as villains. She was born to play Cruella DeVille!
LucyCompanyPhan 01-11-2004, 04:19 PM Glenn Close in 101 dalmations
the bad guy in Terminator 2
Rebecca Romijn Stamos-X-men 1 & 2

Eleanor Audley was the voice of Malificent in Sleeping Beauty, also the Stepmother in Cinderella. Great actress.
Another great villain actor (at least in voice) is Jeremy Irons. He was Scar in The Lion King.
Tim Curry is the best - love him. My sister and I were just talking about this yesterday, trying to think if there was just one movie where he played a good guy. The best we could come up with was 2 of the 3 endings in Clue ;)
Gotta love Alan Rickman! (Anyone who saw Sense & Sensibility should understand why!) definately his best role, but he does make good villians too - remember Quigley Down Under and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves?
BTW, I can't believe nobody's mentioned VINCENT PRICE yet! :eek2:

Hey, he's a non-conformist! What's he care, anyways? They all wish they were Frank-N-Furter ;)
I really want to see him play Scrooge in a live adaptation of A Christmas Carol. I bet he'd be fab in that.
Richard O'Brien's a great villain too. Ever-After and Dark City, EEK!

Yes, he made a great villain. His movies scare the hell out of me.
Penny Lane 01-16-2004, 01:20 PM Brad Pitt played a really sleazy criminal in "Kalifornia"
Penny Lane 01-16-2004, 01:24 PM Another good one is Dennis Hopper:D (Blue Velvet, Speed)
Brian 01-16-2004, 03:01 PM How about Peter Cushing?
webuster 01-16-2004, 05:31 PM I agree, Richard O'Brien is a great villain. I've only ever seen him in Shock Treatment, Rocky Horror and Dark City. I haven't seen him in Elvira's Haunted Hills- I keep meaning to order that film! However- he was also in a tv show in the UK called The Ink Thief- I remember little about the plot now only that he was scary as hell in it. He was this bad guy that stole books and stuff- and these children travel to his world to stop him. He was creepy- pale white makeup and long black nails.
Also- Tim Curry has played a live action Scrooge on stage, I'm not sure if you saw him in that production, it was a few years ago- but he got brilliant reviews for it.
webuster 01-16-2004, 05:34 PM Forgot to mention; Richard O'Brien is being considered for the role of Death in George Romero's zombie rock musical- Diamond Dead. I knew Richard Hartley (from rocky horror) was involved in the music- and I read some of the script, and thought O'Brien must do this- that's before I found out a vote was already being held- with David Bowie and someone else also being considered. Apparently, O'Brien has given his oppinion on the first draft saying it's as original as rocky horror was back in the 70's- but no ones sure on casting yet, the producers are afraid people will think they're imitating rocky horror by castin richard o'brien.
Rhiannon 01-16-2004, 08:01 PM Ian McKellen as Magneto in X-Men
RoseArt 01-17-2004, 03:32 PM Jack Nicholson. I loved him as the "joker".
barwars 01-17-2004, 10:08 PM Jack Nicholson.
So evil.... and we dont even know it.
He's the perfect villian.
Jame Earl Jones as Darth Vader.
best. voice. ever.
And Im not sure if he has ever played a villian before but.... Sean Connery always seemed to me like the villian type.
And I could definately see Woody Allen as a timid, vengeful (is that a word) villian. Not sure exactly WHAT he's doing.... but as long as its evil, it makes him happy.
And about Disney Villians.... above and beyond them all.... Ursala from "The Little Mermaid".... the best part of the movie.
barwars 01-17-2004, 10:10 PM Not an actor.
But the villian of the entire world.... Adolf Hitler.... has been the bad guy in lots of movies.
Beavis 01-18-2004, 12:30 AM Alec Baldwin
dr frasier crane 01-18-2004, 03:04 AM Jack Nicholson
webuster 01-18-2004, 09:48 AM Woody Allen would be great to play 'Dark Helmet' if there was a Spaceballs remake, or if they did a Spaceballs sequel (the search for more money) he could play one of those villains.
Ursula is the greatest Disney villain ever! Lots of those top 10 lists always list Sheer Kahn from the jungle book- but Ursula was the best. The Boogie Man from Nightmare before Christmas was a great villain too. A live action Little Mermaid would be nice, but it'd be compared to Splash! too much. Alice in Wonderland never seems to translate well to live action (it's been done almost 10 times live action I think)- so it might be hard to do a great Little Mermaid live action.
factsoflife 01-19-2004, 07:18 PM Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon in "Thelma and Lousie".

He plays it so good. Actually good or bad, I love him in anything, including "Sense & Sensibility" and "Dogma". I still haven't seen "Love Actually" yet though.

An easy RO'B film to find is "Ever After" where he plays the villain, and he's sooooo slimy, it's great ;) I keep meaning to order Elvira too - I can believe it's not the best film out there, but I don't really care!
I heard about the play with Tim Curry, but it was only in New York for like a month - being in Michigan I didn't have a chance to see it. He should still do a movie of it though :)

Well, the fact that Disney's The Little Mermaid is so completely disloyal to the original tale by HC Andersen makes it very unlikely that there will ever be a live-action version - at least with the happily ever after ending that everyone now thinks is the way it's supposed to be  And the sea witch isn't even a villain in the original story!
Faerie Tale Theatre did a live-action version of the original tale with Pam Dawber and Helen Mirren back in the 80s, and it's fabulous. (It keeps the original ending where the prince marries another woman for love and the mermaid doesn't disappear, but dies and goes to heaven.) There have been a few movies with mermaids in them that were nothing like Splash, and if they ever did do a high-budget live-action version of the Little Mermaid that was true to the story, absolutely no one would compare it to a comedy! ;)

I totally agree :) "Love Actually" was not as good as I was expecting, but it's worth seeing just for all of the actors from "Sense & Sensibility" ;) Emma and Alan are married, and Hugh Grant plays Emma's brother

Oh, UNFAIR! Come on, the Rocky fans will love it! David Bowie was great in Labyrinth... but apart from that... um, cast Ritz :D
RoseArt 01-20-2004, 09:53 PM Since the name "Rocky" got in my head I thought Mr. T was a great villian in the Rocky III movie. He would have been a great bad guy but decided to be a cult hero. Almost a Ronald McDonald type. I wonder how he would have done if he decided not to become the great role model.

Oh, then you obviously haven't seen Raising Cain or The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai in the 8th Dimension. Still, I don't know why anybody hasn't picked such movie villains as Anthony James, Richard Lynch, or John Saxon.
Rhiannon 01-26-2004, 09:23 PM Jack Nicholson
-*Forever*- 01-28-2004, 09:14 PM I love Alan Rickman and Jeremy Irons. They were both in Die Hard movies and they played the Gruber brothers (only Alan's character died in the first one, so that's why Jeremy's character came back to get John in the 3rd one).
And as for female villians... *thinks* Daryl Hannah as Elle Driver (Kill Bill)!!! She is SO good in that role, even though we've only seen a little bit of her... but more in Volume 2 :D
LuLu Rogers 03-31-2010, 08:47 PM Tim Curry does make an excellent villain, but according to him he'd much rather play the good guy.
Christoper Walken, Christopher Llyod, Robert Englund, Vincent Price, Robert Mitchum, Rebecca De Mornay, Brad Dourif, Julian Beck, and Mark Wahlberg all make great villlains.
catlover79 04-01-2010, 12:25 AM Gregory Sierra (:eyes:) also played his share of chilling villains in Deep Space Nine, Deep Cover, MacGyver, Unspeakable Acts, Blue Thunder, Kenny Rogers as the Gambler: The Adventure Continues, Uncommon Valor, Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O, Pocket Money, The Culpepper Cattle Company, among others. He was very credible playing a villain as well as a hero. :D
70s show watcher 04-01-2010, 01:44 AM paul lemat and rhe late david dukes come to mind
LuLu Rogers 04-01-2010, 02:16 AM Adding to my list, Wayne Rogers, Christian Bale, and Anthony Perkins.
factsoflife 04-01-2010, 06:13 PM Morgan Fairchild is a wonderful villian.
Torgo 04-01-2010, 07:56 PM Malcolm McDowell - A Clockwork Orange, Tank Girl
Paul L Smith - Midnight Express, Popeye, Crimewave, Sonny Boy
Max von Sydow - Flash Gordon, Needful Things, Strange Brew
catlover79 04-02-2010, 02:13 AM ^ Paul L. Smith ROCKS. :D
