In tonight's episode, "An Anniversary Surprise (0320)", I noticed something that perhaps never occurred before. In the scene where Mr. Roper finished having lunch with the real-estate agent and then noticed Mrs. Roper entering the Regal Beagle, Mr. Roper handed the real-estate agent the bill and told her to pay the bartender.
I think that was the only time I saw somebody pay for drinks or even food at the Regal Beagle. In other episodes, the characters just simply had some drinks or food, and left without paying anything. A few examples:
Handcuffed (0418):
Jack orders three glasses of wine for himself, his date, and Chrissy, as well as a sandwich for Chrissy. When the date is ruined after wine is spilled Brenda, Jack and Chrissy leave without paying.
Dying to Meet You (0522):
After being threatened by Max, Jack and Larry run out of the Beagle.
Perhaps the trio were so well-liked at the Regal Beagle that all their food and drinks were on the house.
It's possible that Jack and the other characters had a running tab at the Beagle, which they paid at the end of the month.
Ah, the running tab. The dream of every bar patron...

Also in "The Older Woman", and another one that I can't think of the name. Mrs. Roper tells Mr. Roper to be a big spender or something and Mrs. Roper gets gin on the rocks. I think it was "Chrissy and the Guru". Those are some episodes that I don't think the Ropers paid. I guess anything can happen on TV.

The three roommates probably had a big bar tab to pay every month. No wonder they could never come up with the rent!

I am grateful that none of the bars I go to allow patrons ot have a recurring bar tab.
I would shutter to think of how much that tab would be at the end of the month.

Well, in the show where Janet goes to talk to the bartender and Terri just kind of tags along, she mentions a tab. She orders the drinks and is trying to flirt and then she tells him he could add that to her tab, that would be Janet Wood's tab. ;)

Yeah, I remember that. Since the bartender was new, how did he know she was really Janet Wood? She could have been telling him to put it on someone else's (or a fake person's) tab.

I don't have the EXACT wording, but in Episode one of season two, which was on WPIX New york last night, the bartender brings over something to jack who's with a girl and aska him "should I put it on your tab?"

What a bad habit for them to get into. I'm surprised they didn't tell Roper, "Sorry, we don't have the rent. We have to pay our bill at the Reagle Beagle."
His face would have been red!

In the movie Donnie Darko it is mentioned that some famous linguist was convinced that out of all the combinations of sounds and words in English, "cellar door" was the most beautiful.
It's got nothing on "running tab" though.
