I think I was into that song when I was a kid about 30 years ago. BEFORE I got into Black Sabbath. OMG how quickly my tastes changed for the better.

OHIIIIIIIIiiiiiii got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a brand new flame thrower......

Brand New Key is a dreadful song. I did like Melanie's song, Lay Down.

There are a few songs I don't like from the middle ages. I will call the 50's 60's and 70's for now the middle ages. The reason some are just so sad. I hear "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro, "Alone again naturally" by Gilbert O'sullivan and "Blind man in the Beachers" by David Geddes and even "Rocky" by Austin Roberts and I start to cry.

I downloaded this song and let me put it this way: this is the part where you guys say, "You asked for it." HORRIBLE SONG!!! It must be really unpopular because Kazaa Lite didn't have a lot of users sharing it. Good thing I never hear songs like that here in SD.

And yes that file has been sent to my Recycle Bin. I think I'll have to sterlize it.

Yeah, I remember that song when it came out- I believe in 1971 (from memory). You people are going to be amazed to hear that it was #1 for 3 weeks late in that year (this one I looked up).

I never really hated the song, but then again, there were a lot more from '71 I liked better.

Brand New Key by Melanie is an awesome tune, I like it, catchy melody and number one hit on Billboard for three weeks, it's the song she is most known for. :)

Conversely, her other top ten hit, Lay Down/Candles In The Rain, I think that song is dreadful.

I think Brand New Key is just okay, it's not the worst song ever, there are lots more that I really hate. Having said that, I will say that no it doesn't have a lot of substance to it, and depending on the mood I'm in there are times that if it came on the radio I'd probably turn it off. Other times it would be just pleasant background noise.

I always thought Brand new key was an OK song. Kinda fun and a catchy tune! But I really love Lay down , Lay down , candles in the rain! Beautiful song.! :)

Melanie also had a song called " Look what they done to my song " which was cool . I liked Melanie ! ;)

I'm not sure Brand New Key was just about roller skating. I think it was some kind of sexual metaphor.

"Brand New Key" went to #1 in the US on the chart dated December 25, 1971, where it stayed for three weeks. No word on if the song helped boost sales of roller skates for Christmas. Some believed this song was about trying to score drugs, with the key representing a "kilo" of marijuana.

Melanie had a #31 hit on Billboard in 1972 with the song Ring The Living Bell, it's my 2nd favorite Melanie song after Brand New Key.

Oh Wow Marlene , I never knew this being I was a little girl when this song was popular ! Cool theory about this , alternate to the sexual overtone theory !!;)

Back then almost every song was analyzed as having a drug reference. Even "Hey Jude".

Reading quotes from Melanie on Wikipedia, she says the song (she wrote it) is about roller skating. She had been on a fast, and broke it after smelling McDonald's on the way back from a flea market. The food smell somehow brought back memories of roller skating, etc. So she quickly wrote the song. She says about song writing, people will read into what they will. But, I'd say she should know!

Tough audience from back in 2004, but I agree with Bonnie--it's a cute little song. I think this is the hit from a scratchy record, with her lip-syncing to it:

and, better sound

Lay Down (another good one) is with the Edwin Hawkins Singers--I never knew that.

I was at a record store yesterday and in the dollar bin I found "Melanie live at carnigee hall" (1972) but it only had 1 record, the 2nd record had "Brand new key" so I didnt get it......

Then I went to the Melanie Bin and started looking thru the records and I found "Gather me" for $15 and I didnt wanna spend that much on something I might not like so I looked further and found a UK release of the same album and this one was only $8 so I got it...'

I must say,I dont know how this song was a hit,it isnt that good!!!!! (I dont remember ever hearing it)

The rest of the album seems to be Ok i guess........

I agree there are sexual metaphors in the lyrics.

"I've been lookin around awhile, you've got somethin for me, I've got a brand new pair of roller skates and you've got a brand new key." ;)

I think the song was a #1 hit partly because of the lyrics and also because of the catchy melody.

Ring The Living Bell is another hit from Melanie that I like.

"Joy To The World" by Three Dog Night does it for me.
I like all of the rest of TDN's songs, but that one turns me off.
