I'm curious to know because so many people I talk to here in NY love it. Yet, some people I've talked to outside of the Tri-State area aren't really big fans, never heard of it or just don't like it.

View Full Version : Is the Honeymooners just appealing to New Yorkers? Brian Damage 01-02-2004, 07:11 PM I'm curious to know because so many people I talk to here in NY love it. Yet, some people I've talked to outside of the Tri-State area aren't really big fans, never heard of it or just don't like it. TJL 01-02-2004, 08:45 PM It's possible. The show itself was full of references to various places around the New York, so someone frrom the outside might not find it as amusing when Ralph and Ed make a joke about a certain landmark. New York probably has more sentiment as far as Ralph Kramden goes. He represents all the hard working stiffs in New York trying to make a living. Brian Damage 01-03-2004, 01:58 PM good point TJL 01-03-2004, 04:35 PM Plus, Channel 11 has been showing the Honeymooners for so long in reruns, it's become a TV institution here in New York. musicradio77 01-05-2004, 11:41 AM "The Honeymooners" had been on WB11, forever. This show was appealing to every New Yorkers could watch each and every morning. VIDEOWACK 01-05-2004, 09:35 PM Well, the show is ABOUT New York, and it was FILMED in New York, so that flavor is already built-in to it. I think it automatically and lovingly appeals to New Yorkers especially. Tweety 01-06-2004, 01:05 PM I grew up in NJ during the 60s and 70s and it seems like just about everyone I knew liked the Honeymooners... I also went to college in NJ (with a lot of NJ and NY kids) and same thing, everyone loved the 'mooners... it was on WPIX 11 every night at 11... However, now I live in Florida, and have met a lot of people from all over the country, including the midwest (I know a lot of Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin folks, especially).... It doesn't seem to me that the folks I know from other parts of the country are as big a fans of this show as my NY/NJ friends... a lot of people like it , a lot of people don't... it appears that the most popular reason for NOT liking the show is "it's too loud"... Sure, Ralph yelled a lot, and he and Alice could have some loud discussions, but it's amazing how so many people can't get past that and see the brilliance behind the C39... I suppose it's their loss, but if I guess if one doesn't know what one's missing, then missing it isn't as bad... And of course, so many people I know who don't like the Honeymooners, are the same ones who love "Survivor" and "Celebrity Mole" and all of these idiotic reality shows....go figure. But based on anecdotal evidence I've seen, there does seem to be an extra affinity for this show from people in the NY/NJ area... |
