that the Tickets were not hers until she found out the tickets were a winner. I'm sorry but Edith's stupidty really bothered me sometimes. If Louise Jefferson let 10 months go past without asking Edith about the Lottery Tickets, why the hell would Edith call Louise to give her the winnng ticket? And something that was even more STUPID, Edith refused to accept half of the $500 when Louise offered and it was a ticket she paid for. WHY???? I'm sorry but Edith really earned the title DINGBAT in this episode. I could not believe hiow stupid Edith was in the Episode=Winning Ticket"



Why would the Jeffersons never ask Edith about the tickets if they asked her to buy them on her way to the store? The Writing in this episode was not very good.

I thought you didn't pay much attention to Edith! :joke: Edith is flawlessly honest. Her honestly got her into trouble many times on the show. She was "people smart and book dumb." Her kindness toward her fellow humans outweighed the fact that she wasn't very bright. And if you want to get picayune, all sitcoms have an episode or two or three where the plot didn't make all that much sense. We can pick the shows apart and discuss them as we enjoy doing, but perhaps no one "back then" thought we'd have the chance to watch them a couple hundred times to notice all the nuances! :D

You couldn't help but pay attention to how stupid Edith was in that episode. Damm she was a idiot.

The exchange between Edith and Louise (which we never saw) in which Louise asked Edith to buy tickets was probably a very light, airheaded type of conversation. The plan to buy tickets was probably very spur of the moment. Understanding that aspect of the characters was a part of the humor of the show that was not always directly shown.

But you knew that Archie and George J probably did understand, and it only added to their frustration in trying to resolve the situation.

Because of their particular personalities, the wives cared more about their friendship, while the husbands cared more about the money.

It added to the humor.

But it was still so weird for Edith to not accept Louise Offer to share the winnings. I bet when Louise went home they were laughing at how dumb she was. Louise always knew Edith wasn't all there, but still was friends with her anyway because of her niceness.

Edith would never have accepted 50% of the winnings. It would have put a stain on her good character. Her good character was a huge part of the show.

I don't think the Jeffersons would have laughed at Edith. They would have appreciated her friendship even more for her generosity. Perhaps even given her a gift for her honesty and kindness.

Mr Jefferson would have laughed about Archie's misfortune, though.

The Jeffersons buying Edith a gift would have been a good idea for a tag scene. Have Louise knocking on the door and Edith lets her in and Louise comes in with a gift for EDith since she was so nice about the lotter ticket. But the episode just ends with Edith looking STUPID-LOL

The Jeffersons did buy Edith a gift, half of the money was used for a gift certificate that she could use at some kind of beauty parlor. They made sure that it was something that Edith could use and Archie couldn't. Sometimes this final scene is shown and sometimes it isn't.


The whole thing was part of the plot and personalities of the characters; get over it. :crazy:

Well it's a scene that TV LAND cut out. Was it a tag scene? I now have to get the UNCUT version of that episode.

Yes. That's a problem with TVLand or any channel; you can never be sure if you're getting the full plot.

OK thanks. I was wondering why the episode would end with Edith Looking so dumb. But now i understand the scene was cut.

In the tag scene at the end of "Edith's Winning Ticket,' Louise had given a 100 dollar gift certificate to a lingerie shore.
I wish TV Land wouldn't cut out so much.

Exactly...I think people miss the point of this episode...

I think (I'm not positive) that Edith even explained to Louise that she (Edith) never would have even BOUGHT a lottery ticket if Louise hadn't asked her to... This is precisely why Edith didn't feel that the Bunkers were entitled to any of the winnings...

Edith was simply doing what she thought was the right thing in that episode...it's easy to say what an idiot she was, etc, but she didn't want her friendship with the Jeffersons to be affected by the ticket, so she wanted no part of it...she valued Louise's friendship more than the $250 for splitting a ticket which Edith admitted she never would have bought in the first place...

Well I found out that Louise bought Louise a gift certificate wih the Lottery winnings. That scene is not on the TV LAND version.

I just still found it odd that Edith didn't think about Louise until she heard the tickets were winnings tickets. Before she found out they were winnings tickets, the fact that Louise asked her to buy them never crossed her mind. If I was Archie I woud have asked for a Divorce-LOL
