View Full Version : Does anyone know about the name Lebost?
Lolac 01-02-2004, 11:16 AM Does anyone know the significance of the name "Lebost" in the Dick Van Dyke Show? It has been used for minor background characters in at least 3 episodes that I can remember, including the one that was on TV Land today, where Rob and Laura go on their honeymoon. The name on the Captain's desk when Rob goes in to ask for the 3 day pass is Lebost. In the episode "Too Many Stars," the English teacher, whose wife is from Mexico and sings and dances so well, is named Mr. Lebost. And in the episode entitled "Jealousy," it is suggested by both Rob and Jerry that Laura call Charles Lebost as a fourth for the bridge game. Just something I've noticed and wondered if anyone knew anything about it.

i will ask the 'powers that be funny' and see if anyone knows - certainly seems like a 'secret code' or an acronym or something. knowing how writers think, it's probably that the name comes from SOMETHING in Carl's life.

ddenoff 01-02-2004, 01:20 PM Duh - i'm so dense - it's right on our Website!
LeBost is Carl's wife Estelle Reiner's maiden name!

Good eye, Lolac! The name "rang a bell", but I didn't know the answer to the question.

SawgrassSteve 01-04-2004, 05:34 PM I know the answer to these, but just thought I'd throw them out there for the fun of it; The receptionist's name is 'Marge,' and the Petrie's son's name is 'Richie.' How are these names significant and to which cast members?

Well "Richie" is easy--Mary Tyler Moore's son's name! Marge, I believe was Dick's wife's name, right? I'm 99% sure on that. Am I right, Steve?

Christina E 01-04-2004, 06:43 PM I understood from Mary Tyler Moore's autobiography that "Ritchie" was already the character’s name when she auditioned, so that one was coincidence. I believe they were spelled differently though, with the character being spelled with the "t" and Mary's son without.

Hi, Kristen!
Yes, you're right on both counts. Christina may be correct too, about the timing of when the name was decided upon, but it's significant to Mary because of her now deceased son, and Marge was Dick's wife at the time, now divorced.
Now, how about the names "Mildred and Jerome Helper?" (am I pushing it?)

Lolac 01-05-2004, 09:12 PM They were neighbors to Carl and Estelle Reiner in New Rocelle, NY. Carl talks about this in one of the commentaries in the DVD sets.
