SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher David Wells on a one-year contract. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.
Wells, 40, pitched for the New York Yankees in 2003, going 15-7 with a 4.14 ERA (98 ER/213.0 IP) in 31 games (30 starts). Last season marked the eighth time in the last nine seasons that Wells tossed at least 200 innings while reaching double figures in wins. This will mark Wells' second stint in the National League, having pitched for the Cincinnati Reds for part of the 1995 season, going 6-5 with a 3.59 ERA (29/72.2 IP) in 11 games.

Wells has helped pitch his club to the postseason on nine different occasions and earned 1998 ALCS Most Valuable Player honors while with the Yankees. That same season, Wells pitched just the 14th perfect game in Major League regular season history when he accomplished the feat on May 17 vs. the Minnesota Twins. Over parts of 17 Major League seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (1987-1992, 1999-2000), Detroit Tigers (1993-95), Reds (1995), Baltimore Orioles (1996), Yankees (1997-1998, 2002-2003) and Chicago White Sox (2001), Wells has compiled a 200-128 record with a 4.06 ERA (1274 ER/2826.2 IP) in 557 games (386 starts).

With the addition of Wells, the Padres 40-man roster now stands at 40.

I must say I was surprised when I saw the news of the deal in the morning paper. The Padres can't sign Greg Maddux and I'm sort of disappointed with that. But Maddux's asking price and years were prohibitively high and the Padres didn't want to spend too much. At least the Padres have two lefties in the starting rotation (the other being Sterling Hitchcock). I think the Padres are going to be a very competetive team next season. I'm really looking forward to the new ballpark and the new team.

That was a big blow to the Yanks, now they have no lefty starters.

Good riddance to him. In his last stay with the Yanks he did nothing but complain.

In his new contract with the Padres, Wells is exempt from any weight requirements or specific training regiments.

In other words he can let himself get more out of shape and the Padres can't say a thing.

He did complain more than he played and is a cry-baby & he needs to go to sensitivity and attitude adjustment school!!

Nice pickup for the 'Res. Nice rotation they've got over there now.

Nice bullpen, too. They've re-signed Rod Beck and Trevor Hoffman. In addition they got an ace relief pitcher named Akinora Otsuka from Japan.

I read that the Padres are close to getting Jeff Cirillo, a reliever, and over $1 million dollars in cash for Kevin Jarvis, Wiki Gonzalez, Dave Hansen, and a minor leaguer. The teams have to get approval from the commish because the Padres would be getting a large sum of money.
