View Full Version : Christmas episode on DVD set edited
Schmoe56789 12-30-2003, 07:02 AM Hi,
I'm sure this was noticed whenever the DVD's were new, but the Christmas episode is edited at the part where Mary says "And for my next number, I think I'm going to cry." I know that's not a huge deal, but it's kind of annoying when you think you're getting completely unedited episodes.

I agree. Bonus features and extras are nice, but not at the expense of the basic expectation of unabridged original episodes.
Larry Surrell 12-30-2003, 10:11 PM Yeah, I noticed that too. The only reason I can think of for the editing is they didn't want to pay royalties for "White Christmas."
I'm no copywrite expert, but I think you can only use a few seconds or a few words of a song without paying for its use. Maybe whoever owns "White Christmas" wanted too much money for its use on the DVD.

I believe this was mentioned right when the DVD's came out. I've always thought they took that out because of something with the restoration of it. But it honestly doesn't take too much away from the episode, IMO.

pandora_spocks 12-31-2003, 11:42 AM So you're telling me that the episodes are somewhat edited? This reminds me when TV Land edited the song used in 'Angels In the Snow.' I hated when they did that because I preferred the original song - Earth Angel.
BTW, Kristen, I actually went to go pick this dvd up at my local FYE (the only place in my town that has it) and what do you know the only copy they had was missing. It was there all that time and it figures the minute I go to buy it, it's not there anymore. :(

Well that one moment is all that's missing from the entire season. When I watched "Christmas and the Hard Luck Kid" on Christmas Eve, I couldn't tell what had been cut out, I just knew something had b/c I had heard others say so. You should still go out and buy it somewhere!! LOL

Oh, well it's not cut out on the vhs tape I have. I forgot to watch it on Christmas, but I didn't forget to watch some episodes on Mary's birthday. I still continue that tradition. :D
Well, thats the problem. The only store that ever had it around where I live is FYE, but the moment I went to go buy it (actually buy it, not just stare at it in the store lol) they don't have it. I looked on eBay, but too many people who are selling it have too much bad feedback and I don't trust people with that much bad feedback. So I guess I'll have to wait even longer and hope FYE actually re-stocks again. Although, every other time I'd go look they would always have 1 out in view. Maybe that was the only one they had. :( I asked the sales lady if there was anymore and she got all snotty with me and said, 'well, if it's not there. we don't have anymore.'
TeeVeeCloset 01-01-2004, 08:22 PM If you want the christmas episode in complete unedited form seek out the officially released home video from mtm released in 1992 (got mine last year on ebay for $10) it contains the complete white christmas scene, which i transferred to dvd and it looks great....was always a favorite of mine........
as a side piece of trivia, the official name of the episode is
"christmas and the hard luck kid" which is the exact title of a christmas episode of "that girl" produced in 1966 when ann marie (marlo thomas) babysits alone on christmas for a child.

I have that video. ;)
algebra74 06-09-2004, 09:24 PM So exactly how much was edited from this episode. Did she sing the entire song or did she just mention the words? Was this only about 2 seconds or 2 minutes of cut footage?
calvertfan 06-10-2004, 01:00 AM Hey I noticed that too! Because I first saw the episode on TV and I taped it onto my tape, before I had the DVDs...when I got the DVDs, the episode was right in the middle of the tape so I just left it there. Only last week I actually watched the DVD version and I noticed *something* was missing but I couldn't quite tell what, lol. So now I'm glad I have it on tape as well ;)

The part that's cut out of the DVD is:
Mary sings the final verse, "And may all your Christmases be white". The audience applauds (not Mary's studio audience, but the audience at the concert Mary's singing along with). She says, "Thank you. For my next number......I think I'm going to cry", then the Nutcracker music starts.
