For those of you who are not familar with Atlantic Starr they were an late 70's, 80's R&B band which had hits in songs such as "Circles", "When Love Calls", Touch a Four Leave Clover", "Secret Lovers", "Shilver Shadows", "Always", and "In the Name of Love".

It had many female lead singers, but it had its biggest hits with original singer Sharon Bryant, and her replacement Barbara Weathers.

So which Atlantic Starr singer do you like better. Sharon Bryant or Barbara Weathers?

U posted this topic on the wrong website cause this website is mostly white kids & they know nothin about old school r&b artists like Atlantic Starr LOL. U would've been better off posting this on Soul Food tv show message board on Showtime channel's website. I remember Atlantic Starr. I was listening to their Send For Me & Am I Dreaming songs this past weekend. I liked Barbara Weathers in the group better. I've never seen Sharon Bryant before. Barbara was a cutie. Where is Atlantic Starr from? What city are they from?

Well for those who are not familar with Atlantic Starr, here is some more info I forget to tell you.

Mary J. Blige sampled one of their songs "When Love Calls" on her song "Willing and Waiting" on latest album "Love and Life". Also Sharon Bryant provided backup vocals on many Mary J. Blige songs from her 1999 album "Mary."

I told u nobody knows about them LOL. I betcha i'm the only person who's gonna respond to this topic. That's why i never post topics on here about black music cause these white kids don't know nothin about black r&b music. All they know is their wack rock & roll artists & that's all they post topics about. Do u have a picture u can show me of Sharon Bryant? Post a picture of Barbara Weathers too. She's very attractive.

umm, isn't this kinda racist and an over generalization? I bet you'd be the first to gang up on me or anyone else in here in an r&b board if we did nothing but talk about rock.

I know a few Atlantic Starr songs (Circles, Secret Lovers, Always, Masterpiece, , don't know who sang who on them..

But still... why go off like you did because there's some people left who still like rock music? Hip hop may be king right now, but rock hasn't been totally abandoned. And I am sure not everyone in here is white, I know quite a few African-Americans who are able to see past color lines and like rock music as well as r&b/hip hop. Hell, my friend Will LOVES Bjork and HATES Beyonce.

You're right Buffy, I'm white and i know who Atlantic Starr is, they are one of my favs. isiahthomas, why would you even make a statement like that?

I'm white and know who Atlantic Starr are.

Jeeze, anyone who has been to a wedding has heard "Always."

yep, ANYONE whose ever turned on an Adult Contemporary station in the last 15 years has heard Always or Masterpiece.

Now if it was some obscure r&b artist who only had one single that peaked at #99 in 1974, maybe the argument could work, but I'd say most adults in here know who Atlantic Starr are than don't.

ok. I'm willing to bet that a lot of the kids into Hilary Duff and Good Charlotte don't know who Atlantic Starr is.

But... I also highly doubt kids into Beyonce and B2K know who they are either. It's more a generation thing than an race thing.

Also, what is wack about most of the classic rock in here that people talk about? A lot of us in here like r&b music too... we might hate a lot of the overplayed hip hop (you cannot deny it was overplayed this year). But that does not mean that I don't play Prince, Stevie and Marvin cd's, because I DO

which songs did each female sing lead on? I think for people who are were more casual with the songs didn't really distinguish the two singers enough. It's like how Abba diehards and fans can discriminate between Agnetha and Frida songs... but people who might only know the big hits won't or don't care to know the difference.

I like the earlier (say 1980-1986) AS like Circles and If Your Heart Isn't In It more than the watered down Always/Masterpiece incarnation

Ok, Shanon Bryant was in Atlantic Starr from it's incarnation in the mid 70's to 1984, in that time frame they had hits in songs such as "When Love Calls", "Circles", "Touch a Four Leaf Clover", and "If your Heart isn't in it."

Barbara Weathers joined AS in 1985, and was in the band through 1988, after she left the group never had any big hits as they have previously. In that time fame, they had hits in songs such as "Secret Lovers", "Silver Shadows", "Always", "In the name of Love".

BuffySlayer79, if you like the earlier music, then you are a Sharon Bryant person, as am I. I really like the song "Circles" and "When Love Calls." Still taken nothing away from the Weather years in the mid 80's, that was great also, but not as good as the earlier music.

You know it is a shame that most of Atlantic Starr's A&M albums are out of print. I think A&M is where they were at the best. I think A&M should reissue all of their Atlantic Starr albums on double albums CD's, just like Motown reissued all Jackson 5 albums, and Solar reissued most Shalamar albums.

Tvje are u black? U seem to know a lot about r&b music of the past & that's good. I wish a lot of old albums were reissued on cd too. Was Barbara Weathers with the group when they did Am I Dreaming & Send For Me songs? I love those songs by Atlantic Starr. Those are my favorite. Freak A Ristic is another song of their's that i like. Barbara was with them when that song came out. What city is the group from?

No I am half krocation or white, and half Latino. I am really into the old school R&B. Though I like some of today's R&B, it is not as good as in the 70's, and 80's.

Some of my favorite R&B acts are Prince, Janet Jackson, TLC, Mary J. Blige, Rick James, the Time, the Bar Kays, and Cameo, just to name a few. I am also really digging Destiny's Child, Beyonce's solo work, and Alicia Keys.

I like The Time & Cameo a lot too. I was listening to both of them this past weekend. I have a lot of songs from both of them. I like Rick James too. I like a lot of early 80's r&b singers like The Gap Band, Con Funk Shun, Dazz Band, The Deele, Ready For The World, Midnight Star, Lakeside, Zapp, Parliament Funkadelic. I like a lot of funk party music.

It was like any group that had "star" in their name was hot back then: Atlantic Starr, Midnight Star, Five Star, Starpoint. Isiahthomas, you forgot about Klymaxx, that was another hot group from that era. What about Prince? He's my favorite. "Freak-a-ristic" by Atlantic Starr was originally from their album called As The Band Turns.

I miss old-school r&b, WHEN IT WAS FUN.

Give me 70's and 80's r&b like Prince, Janet, The Time, Shalamar/Jody Watley, pre-Bad Michael, Donna Summer, Yarbrough & Peoples, Ohio Players, New Edition/Bobby Brown, Midnight Star and Patrice Rushin amongst others over ANY of the crap passing as r&b today. The last "new school" r&b cd that I bought and really loved was Mary J.'s No More Drama, tho I have liked one of the singles from her latest one, have heard too many mixed things about it before buying it without hearing the whole thing. The past 2-3 years have been really bad. It's been very commercially successful, but there's been very few standouts.

At least Janet has a new cd coming in a few months, let's hope she can help shapeshift how homogenized and faceless r&b music has become in recent years. I'd like to see r&b music be fun again WITHOUT the aid of a special guest rapper. I think the era of collaborations needs to end, 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago, a duet was something special, it was the merging of two talents for one special moment... now most artists pretty much only do collaborations.

Rappers are doing collabos with everybody too today just like r&b singers are. It's sickening. I think anytime a rapper or r&b singer has to have their album full of guest appearances, that means they're afraid to showcase their talent on their own. Benzino is the perfect example of a rapper who always has his entire albums full of guest appearances. I believe if he wasn't the co-owner of The Source rap magazine, he wouldn't have all those guest appearances. I only like old school r&b too, mostly from the early 80's. The 80's was a decade of fun music anyway. R&B music today does suck. Only r&b artist i like is R Kelly. I could care less about his personal life. The man is a legend & every song he makes is a hit. He has produced songs for numerous r&b artists. He is very talented. Everybody loves his Step In The Name Of Love remix. That song is the jam. I never get tired of his Ignition remix. I love that song to death. The video is my favorite of his.
