Here's another one, to make us all feel better...

Nate sat at the table for two at the little Italian place on Polk. He nervously glanced out the window at the rain and then his watch for what seemed the hundredth time. He fingered the single perfect red rose that he'd laid at the place opposite him and wondered what was keeping the woman of his dreams from their first real date. In his mind, she was his fantasy---he knew that they were perfect for each other. They knew everything about each other---and yet they still were in love. She was his best friend, and to him, the most beautiful creature on the planet. She was the savviest person he had ever met, which was something in their line of work. Also, she was honest, which was why he refused to believe the little voice in the back of his head, telling him that she had changed her mind. Nate knew CD. She wouldn't do this to him. She would never stand him up without even calling, especially with how their last conversation went. After all, she had been the one to first kiss him, and then ask him out. Also, she did assure him that she was not going to change her mind. With these thoughts, he picked up his cell phone and dialed her number. After four rings, her voice mail picked up: "Hey, you've reached Inspector CD DeLorenzo. Leave a message and I'll get back to you."

Nate heard the beep and said, "Hey, it's me. Are you still coming? Call me when you get this." Nate snapped his phone shut. 'Now what?' he thought. He remembered something and called the office. Kate herself picked up the phone, which surprised Nate. "Hi, Cap. It's Nate. Listen, have you heard from CD? She was supposed to meet me somewhere thirty minutes ago and hasn't shown up yet."

Kate got a puzzled look on her face. "No, Nate, I haven't. Did she say she was going somewhere else, first?"

"Yeah, she said that she was going to the hospital to check on Gina Bracken, but that's been a while now...Maybe she got some information out of her about the case."

Kate listened to him and paused. Then her eyes widened, and she started to tell Nate very quickly about Liz Rue's association with Ray Sanchez and Gina. "Maybe Cd figured it out, too. But, my word, she's a half-hour late? Nate, just a hunch, but I think you need to get over to Marshal Rue's apartment RIGHT NOW!"
As soon as she hung up, the phone rang again. Shots had been fired in Liz's apartment. Kate's face went white.

Panicked now, Nate took Captain's advice and snatched up the rose, heading for his car. As he ran, his cell phone rang.

Panicked now, Nate took Captain's advice, and snatched up the rose, heading for his car. As he ran, his cell phone rang.

CD lay sprawled across Liz's packing boxed, half-conscious. All she could feel was the tortuous pain in her stomach. She didn't think much, as her body was in shock. She could faintly hear her phone ring, but had little strength left. She knew that she would die without help, and soon. After a minute, she was finally able to lightly grasp the phone from her holster. With her thumb, she hit the "firedial" button, knowing that it would go to her protector, her partner, her love, Nate.

Opening his car door, Nate looked at his phone. The caller ID showed CD's cell phone number, and he hit "talk" as he sat down in the driver's seat. "CD?" He exclaimed, desperately. Silence. "CD!" Nate repeated, louder.

CD could just hear him as the phone lay in her hand, on the floor. She didn't have the power to lift it up to her face. "Nate." she whispered, and then moaned.

Nate thought that he might have heard something, but he thought it may have just been wishful thinking. He pulled down the visor so the police emergency lights could show, and put his siren on. He raced to Liz's building, keeping the phone to his ear the whole time. Just as he pulled up, the tracking on the call kicked in, and showed that CD's phone location was where he thought it was. Nate bolted from the car, leaving the lights flashing and the door open. He tore to the doorman and asked about the new tennant's apartment location. "Hey, you can't just go in there, buddy," yelled the doorman. Nate flashed his badge over his shoulder as he ran up the stairs. He found Liz's door and kicked it down in one try, without bothering to knock or announce himself. His eyes scanned the room. He saw Liz lying on the floor, her chest blackened with blood, and her face dead. Nate's eyes followed down to her feet where two more feet lay. He knew those shoes. Then he saw it. There CD lay, passed out, clutching her phone in one hand with her thumb on "firedial". When he spotted her abdomen, his heart stopped. His worse fear was coming true. Nate ripped his shirt off and pressed it to her wound, in a desperate attempt to stop the blood. He only hoped he wasn't too late. With his hand firmly on her stomach, he yelled into his phone, "Officer down! Officer down! Inspector DeLorenzo needs an ambulance STAT!" Just as he finished those words, the paramedics who had first been called rushed in.

Just as he finished those words, the paramedics who had first been called rushed in. Nate exclaimed, "Thank God you're here! My partner has been shot!" The paramedics swarmed around CD and hoisted her onto the stretcher.
"What about the other one?" One of them asked.
"That's Liz Rue, a U.S. Marshal. I think she shot my partner." Nate answered. The paramedics rushed CD to an ambulance, while Nate ran behind. "She's 34 years old, no pre-existing health problems, and she's not pregnant." Nate loudly and quickly volunteered. He tried to get into the ambulance with her, but a medic stopped him.
"If you're not her brother or her husband, you can't go in there."
Nate didn't want to waste CD's precious seconds to the hospital by arguing with the man. He streaked back to his car, wishing that he and CD were already married. It wasn't the first time that thought had popped into his head. He followed the ambulance that carried the woman he was terrified of forever losing. Dragging behind, with no lights or siren, was the ambulance transporting Liz's lifeless body.

Nate paced up and down the operation waiting room. He raked his fingers through his hair and his eyes frantically darted around the room. Kate, Raina, Magda, and Jinny sat in the chairs against the wall and waited. They noticed Nate's reaction, but kept their thoughts to themselves. Everybody knew that they were closer than partners, but didn't know the extent of their recent events. Nate finally sat down, apart from the women. He leaned forward, resting his arms on his knees, and began to cry. Soon he pulled a hankie out of his pocket and covered his face with his hands. His back heaved as he sobbed. 'How ironic,' he thought, 'that just a week ago, in this very room, we finally shared our first kiss. And now, here I am, horrified that we are going to lose our relationship already, almost before it's begun.'
Kate, not being able to ignore it any longer, moved over to the chair next to him and placed her good arm on his back. "She's tough, Nate. She's going to make it." Kate spoke, soothingly. She knew that she had to say it, despite not fully believing it herself. Kate realized that Nate's feelings for CD definately ran deeper than she had thought. She didn't know what else to say, and Nate didn't respond. All she could do was be there for him.
Jinny suddenly got up and walked to the nurse's desk. "Excuse me, nurse, but my friend Candace is in surgery right now, and you need to do something for me." She narrowed her eyes and spoke assertively. "The second---I mean the SECOND that she is out of surgery, we need to be informed of her status. And you better tell us the truth."
The nurse gulped and disappeared down a hallway. The head of emergency surgery entered the waiting room a minute later. They all looked up at him, and Nate stood up from his chair. "Well?" Nate demanded.
"She's going to make it," the doctor answered. Nate whispered a quick prayer of thanks. The doctor continued, "We removed the bullet---fortunately it didn't do too much damage, just a lot of blood loss. Candace is a lucky woman---2 inches in another direction might have meant death. She's in recovery right now." He looked to Nate. "Are you Nate Basso?"
Nate surprisedly answered, "Yeah?"
The doctor responded, "Her ID card said to notify you in case of emergency. Since yours is the only name connected to her, I am going to let you see her in about an hour. The rest of you will have to wait until morning."

The hour passed by slowly. To Nate, it was the slowest hour of his life. About 10 pm, the nurse called Nate in. Kate, Jinny, Magda, and Raina waited for his return and the news. Nate entered CD's room and sat down in the chair next to her bed. He stared at her pale, thin body and thought how helpless and child-like she looked. His eyes again brimmed with tears as he gently held her hand. Several minutes later, the nurse returned and asked if he wanted to leave. He was shocked that anyone could even suggest such a thing and shouted, "No!"
The nurse replied, "Well, your friends would like to know how she is doing."
Nate just quietly said, "Tell them that she's sleeping and that I'm staying here with her tonight."
"Oh, I'm sorry, sir, but we can't just let you stay here long."
Nate gritted his teeth and stared coldly at the nurse. "You wanna bet?" he replied. The nurse didn't answer, but spun around and left.
"I've got you, partner," he whispered to CD. "CD, please don't leave me, baby. I can't imagine my life without you, either. I never knew what faith and love were until I met you." The tears slid down his cheeks as he pleaded with her. He kissed her cheek. "You have to get better, so we can have dinner at the little Italian place on Polk... I love you, Candace." He paused. "I only hope that someday you can tell me that you love, me, too." Nate was pretty sure that she couldn't hear him, but he didn't care. He did love her. If she wouldn't remember when she wakes up, he would tell her again. He would tell her every day for the rest of his life, he resolved. His thoughts were interrupted by his hand being squeezed by CD's hand. Nate smiled and softly said, "I guess that you can hear me. Don't worry---I'm not leaving here anytime soon, babe." He watched her for a while longer; then emotionally and physically exhausted, he succumbed to sleep.

Sun poured in through the window, and shone on the sleeping CD's face. She slowly opened her eyes and glanced out the window, wondering where she was. Then she looked down at her hand with the I.V.s sticking from it and remembered what happened. She looked to her side and was silently thrilled to see Nate, sleeping slumped in the chair beside her. CD carefully pulled aside her covers to see what had happened to her, and she saw that her whole midsection was wrapped in bandages. She weakly laid her head back down on the pillow, her head swirling from the low blood pressure. She worried about what poor Nate had gone through the night before. She remembered the thoughts that had passed through her mind when Liz pulled the gun on her. At first she was shocked by Liz, and then she thought that she would die, and what would Nate do? She knew that he deeply cared for her, and their few moments together had been so special. Her mind had raced on, figuring out that Liz had been the one to kill her partner, Tom. CD knew that she would have to kill Liz before Liz killed her. CD's thoughts came back to the present when Kate, Jinny, Magda, and Raina crept in and smiled at her.
"Hey, CD! How are you feeling?" Raina asked.
"Better, I guess." CD replied.
At the sound of CD's voice, Nate abruptly awoke. In a split second, his eyes opened wide and he exclaimed, "CD! You're awake!"
"And now, so are you," she said as she smiled.
A big grin flashed on Nate's face and he said, "How are you feeling? Are you in pain? Is there anything I can get for you?"
"I'm OK, considering I've been shot and all. I am a little hungry, though, " she replied. Magda nodded and went to get the nurse. CD continued, "What happened to me?
Kate said, "After you were shot, Nate called around looking for you, I guess because you didn't show up somewhere."
CD remembered the date and felt even worse about poor Nate, sitting alone in that restaurant. She figured that he thought that she had stood him up.
Kate continued, "I found out some facts about our little Marshal that were very suspicous and figured that you may have guessed them, too. So I sent Nate to Liz's apartment. About the same time, one of Liz's neighbors called dispatch, saying that they thought they heard shots."
Kate paused, and Nate took over. "So I found you, and the the EMT's took you to the hospital. You were in surgery about an hour, but you fortunately had no major damage. I stayed here with you the rest of the night." Nate paused, and CD looked into his eyes.
"Thanks," she whispered.
"And, oh, by the way, you needed a couple of pints of blood. One of the pints that you received was mine," Nate said.
A tear slid down her cheek as she thought about what he just said. He have her his blood. Nate's blood was coursing through her veins, keeping her alive. 'He really loves me,' she thought.
"Thanks for that, too," she said, and fell asleep again. The other women felt very touched by the display they had just seen.

Kate broke the silence and said, "Nate, you should eat something---when was the last time you ate?"

Nate blinked and said, "Uhh...lunch yesterday...but I'm not hungry."

"I'll get you some breakfast at the cafeteria and I'll be right back," Kate said as she walked out of the room.

Jinny said to Nate, "You know, if you want, one of us can take over for you---don't feel like you have to do this alone. I could stay here for a while. You could go home for a little bit, take a shower, change, eat, you know."

Nate looked at her and said, "Ah, thanks for the offer, Jin, but I'm fine."

"Well, at least let Mag and me get you a change of clothes and stuff. It's no problem."

"Thank you," he replied. "But could of you get CD some of her stuff? Like her pajamas, some music, a magazine, you know better than me, women stuff. Oh, and clothes to wear home."

Raina nodded and said, "Sure." She and Jinny left.

Kate returned with Nate's breakfast, and the nurse brought a smoothie for CD. CD was still asleep, so Nate kept it on ice until she would wake up. Kate went back to the office. Jinny, Magda, and Raina brought the other requested items and went back to work as well. Nate went into the bathroom and washed his face and shaved, thankful that Jinny knew what to pack for a guy. He changed clothes and ran a wet comb through his hair. After he brushed his teeth, he returned to CD's side, feeling much better. He finger-combed her soft, blonde hair and happily sighed as he touched it. He sat back down to wait for CD to wake up. After a short while, CD awoke. Nate held the smoothie up for her to drink. She sucked on the straw, not realizing how hungry she had been. It wasn't exactly the little Italian place on Polk, but at least she and Nate were together.

When she finished, the nurse came to check on her. "So far, so good, young lady," the older woman said with a smile. "You're very remarkable---few people recover so quickly from such a trauma."

CD grinned but then remembered Liz. "How is the woman that I was found with---Marshal Rue?" CD asked the nurse.

"She was dead when the paramedics got there. Killed in one shot."

CD was sorry that she had to kill her, but she knew that it was Liz or her. Nate just smiled and thought to himself, 'That's my CD---always a great cop.' The nurse left and finally Nate and CD could be alone and awake at the same time. They studied each other's faces, until CD spoke.

"I'm so glad that you're here."

Nate smiled and said, "Me, too. I wouldn't miss this for anything." He paused. "I should have been there. I'm your partner. I'm supposed to keep you from getting hurt." Nate's eyes were brimming with tears.

CD said, "It was my fault, Nate---I shouldn't have gone there alone. I guess I just didn't think that it would happen....Sorry I didn't make it to dinner." She laughed a little with the last part.

"No problem," Nate replied. "CD, I've been thinking about how close I came to losing you, and it terrifies me. It makes me think about how precious every moment is."

"I know," CD said. "I thought about that, too. And I have something to tell you."

"What is it?" Nate asked.

"I know," CD said. "I thought about that, too. And I have something to tell you."

"What is it?" Nate asked.

CD said, "I think that 'we' are worth the risk, too.... I don't care about what happens, I just want us to be together." The tears began to cascade down CD's cheeks, and Nate dabbed at them with a tissue, and then dried his own.

"Oh, CD, I want us to be together, too. I don't want to waste another day," Nate softly stated, and then paused. "I love you, CD."

"I love you, too, Nate," CD replied. She reached up to his face and stroked his hair. Nate brushed his hand across her cheek, and they looked deep into each other's eyes. CD put her hand on the back of his neck and pulled him close to her, and their lips met. They kissed and CD whispered against his lips, "I do love you, Nate."

Nate whispered in return, "I love you, too." He then kissed her again. When they broke away, Nate got up and said, "Hey! I'll put some music on for you. I had Raina bring your boom box and a few of your CD's. He put in a Kenny G CD and said, "Here. This is relaxing. You want a magazine?" He held up "Newsweek".

"All I want is you," CD said with a grin.

Nate loved her smile, and was ecstatic that it was back. "You've already got me, no question," Nate replied, with his own smile. Kenny G's piece with Louis Armstrong, "What A Wonderful World," began to play. It really fit the moment. Nate walked back to his chair and sat down. He kissed CD once more, and then held her hand in his.

Several days passsed, and Nate was pursuaded by Jinny and Magda to go home once a day for a shower and a short break. He did, however, spend the rest of his time with CD. They spent their days playing cards and Trivial Pursuit, and Nate read to her. They occasionally watched TV if there was anything on the 3 channels that the hospital got. More and more CD realized how much Nate loved her. She saw the complete, selfless devotion that he gave her. She knew that if she could depend on him during this, she could depend on him for anything.

The time finally came for CD to go home. Nate pulled his car up to the front entrance, and stopped at the gift shop on the way up. Nate returned to CD's room, where the nurse was waiting with a wheelchair. CD said to the nurse, "I don't need that! I'm not an invalid---I can walk!"

The nurse insisted that it was hospital policy, and CD reluctantly complied. Nate laughed at that and walked behind CD and the nurse, on the way to the car. CD stood up and got into the passenger seat of Nate's car. "Let's go!" She said to him, happily.

Nate smiled, shut her door, and went around to get into the driver's seat. He sat down and kissed her. "There's something that I've been meaning to give you since 'the night,' " he said. "Here," and handed her one perfect red rose.

"Aww, Nate, how sweet," CD said in surprise.

"I had a rose like this one waiting for you, at dinner. I remembered to take it with me when I left, but I forgot it in the car. So, I decided that even thought you didn't make it to dinner, you could at least get the rose."

CD smiled at Nate and kissed him. She wrapped her arms around him and deepened the kiss. Nate felt a shiver run down his spine, and rubbed her back. Finally, they pulled apart and Nate said, "Let's go home." He put the car in drive and they were off.

When they got to CD's apartment, she unlocked the door and she and Nate walked inside. She immediately noticed that something was different. "It's been cleaned!" she exclaimed, pleasantly surprised. Nate just smiled and grabbed her mail from the floor. CD took off her coat and said with a smile in her voice, "Naaate? Would you happen to know why my apartment is cleaner than I left it?"

Nate said, "What makes you think I know anything about it?!" He could barely keep from laughing.

CD just shook her head and said, "Ug, Nate. You are SUCH a bad liar." She walked into the kitchen, where dishes had been washed and put away. she opened the fridge to get herself some water and noticed fresh milk and orange juice. Nate hung up her coat and then picked her bags up and carried them into her bedroom. Just then CD appeared.

"Hey, why don't you take a shower. I'll be in the other room if you need me," Nate said to her.

"I'm doing OK, Nate, really. You don't need to fuss over me so much!"

"That's what boyfriends are for," he replied and then kissed her hair.

As Nate left her room, CD felt relieved that he didn't seem to be put out at all by her. She continued on to shower and change into some real clothes---jeans and a t-shirt. She combed her freshly washed hair, and even decided to put on just a little makeup. 'I don't want to press my luck!' CD joked with herself. She emerged to find Nate in her kitchen, making brunch. The table was set for two, and the rose that he had given her was in a glass of water, in the center of the table. "Mmm, smells good. What are you making?" CD asked Nate.

"Eggs, toast, and grapefruit," he answered, as he brought two steaming plates over. They sat down and dug into the food. CD gingerly took a bite, but then a smile spread across her lips.

"Not bad," she said. "I didn't know that you could cook."

"Well, I don't let it get around much, but yeah. My grandma taught me. She said that if I ever wanted to get and keep a wife, I'd better learn how to cook." Nate quickly realized how the words had sounded. "I mean, um...that I should...uh..." Nate mumbled.

CD laughed and said, "It's OK, Nate, I know what you mean. I had a grandma, too."

They finished eating, and Nate washed the dishes. CD tried to dry them, but Nate told her to sit back down. When he was done, he said, "Are you going to be OK this afternoon? Because if you want me to stay, I will---"

CD cut him off. "I'm FINE, Nate! You need to get back to work, Emeril. Go on," she said with a smirk.

"I guess you're right. But call me if you need anything, alright?" he replied.

"Yeah, sure."

Nate grabbed his coat and they walked to the door. He stopped in the doorway, and kissed CD. She returned the kiss, and they held each other tight. Finally, Nate softly said, "I'll bring dinner," and left.

When Nate arrived back at the division, Raina practically pounced on him, her face lit up like a Christmas tree. Nate looked at her, and said, "What?"

Raina said, "Sooo...don't hold back! How are you and CD doing?" and lightly punched his arm.

Nate tried to hold back a smile and said, "Nothing...other than I almost lost my partner."

Raina didn't take that for an answer. "Oh, come on, Nate, I saw you two together at the hospital. I know you care about each other."

Nate paused and said, "OK, Raina, CD and I do care about each other. But when there's anything to tell, you'll be the first to hear. In the meantime, let's just keep this between us, OK?"

Raina grinned and replied, "Yeah, sure. But when you need help picking out a ring, call me!"

Nate just laughed and held his finger up to his lips to signal her to be quiet. "Shut up, Raina!"

Nate spent the afternoon catching up with his paperwork and phone calls. When five o'clock rolled around, he left the building and ran a few errands on the way to CD's place. By six he stood at her door and knocked. CD came to answer it. She opened the door and smiled. "Hey," she said.

"Hey to you, too," Nate replied and stepped inside. CD shut the door and kissed him. "Wow, I guess I should have come by here more often when we were just partners!" Nate joked. CD groaned. Nate ignored it and said on the way to the kitchen table, "I brought a pizza, just the way you like it."

"Thanks," CD said. She had already set the table and poured the drinks. They sat down and ate together. When they finished, Nate again washed up the few dishes while CD protested. Afterwards, Nate put on a movie that he had rented, "Tootsie". It wasn't his favorite, but he did find it funny, and he knew that CD would enjoy it. Nate and CD sat down on the sofa and snuggled close. CD laid her head on Nate's chest, and he held her in his arms. Nate stroked her golden strands of hair, and they enjoyed just being together. When the movie was over, Nate kissed her forehead and she looked up, to bring her lips to his.

When the kiss ended, Nate raised his eyebrows and said, "I see the shooting didn't affect your tongue!"

CD blushed and said, "Stop!"

Nate grinned and gave her one more kiss. "I'm going to go now and let you get some sleep. OK?"

CD nodded and replied, "See you tomorrow?"

"Yeah. I"ll swing by at lunch, and uhh... (with a half-smile) What are you doing tomorrow night?" he asked.

"Having dinner with you, I hope," CD played along.

"OK, then, tomorrow night, we'll finally have that date."

"Sounds good to me," CD returned. Nate kissed her once more at the door, said goodnight, and left.

The next day, Nate went to work while CD stayed at her apartment and organized things. She knew that she should be resting, but she knew that she had to do something productive, or she would drive herself crazy. She really missed her job, and working with Nate. They were sucha terrific team, and she so longed to be back there. It would be 3 more days until she could get her stitches taken out, though, and she couldn't risk ripping them.

Meanwhile, Nate, too, felt that something major was missing. He didn't mind partnering up with Raina---she was smart, ambitious, and eager to learn---but she wasn't CD. No one knew better than CD how he thought, and he knew better than anyone how CD's mind worked.

Soon lunchtime rolled around, and Nate picked up some Panera sandwiches on the way to CD's. They enjoyed the short time they had together, and Nate went back to work. Before he left lunch, though, he said to CD, "Now, let's try this again. I'm not going to let Liz ruin our first real date. THIS time, I am going to get you myself, and take you to the restaurant." He smiled.

CD laughed and said, "OK, sounds good. Hopefully THIS time we can actually have that dinner. Pick me up at six."

They kissed, and Nate looked at her and meaningfully stated, "I love you."

"And I love you."

While waiting for Nate to pick her up, CD showered and got ready. She styled her hair and put some makeup on. Then she threw on a long black skirt and a red cowl-neck sweater. She spritzed on a little Moonlight Path and took one last look at herself in the mirror. Then she saw the rings on her left hand. 'My gosh, why do I still wear these? Well, they're coming off now.' she thought. CD pulled the rings off, put them in a plastic bag and stuck them in the bottom of her dresser.

While CD was at home doing her thing, Nate went to his apartment to do his thing. 'It's strange how little time I spend here these days,' he thought. After he was finished getting ready for the date, Nate stopped by a florist to pick up a small bouquet of flowers, and drove to CD's.

At the sound of the familiar knock of Nate's, CD opened her door. She smiled shyly and said, "Hi."

Nate was grinning from ear to ear and said, "Hi, sweetie." He then kissed her and held out the flowers.

CD said, "Aww, geez, Nate, you didn't have to bring flowers. You know I'm not like that." CD stated the words, but on the inside she was so flattered.

Nate just quickly raised and lowered his eyebrows, and said, "So what? I wanted you to have them. Besides, this is our first bona-fide date." His eyes caught hers and stayed there. They moved closer, and soon felt their lips meet. They melted against each other, and CD and Nate felt as though they were soaring through the clouds. CD wrapped her arms around Nate's shoulders and back, and Nate held CD's back with one hand and caressed her hair with the other. Eventually they pulled away.

CD said, "We need to leave before we want to stay."

Nate nodded and helped CD with her coat. Their hands found each other and they walked out the door together. Nate parked in front of the little Italian place on Polk, and he and CD walked inside. CD was secretly delighted that she finally did find this place. Nate was delighted, but not very secretly, that he and CD were at long last, there, alone, together, and officially as a couple. They were seated, and ordered their food. Nate and CD found themselves just staring at each other and smiling. Nate said, "I am so glad that you're here, CD, and almost completely as good as new. For a while, I thought that this would never happen....I knew that I cared about you from our first day on the job together. But for the longest time, I thought that you didn't care about me....First, after the time with the bomb and we almost died together, and you left for the weekend with Bryan, and---"

"Nate." CD interrupted. "I liked you from the first day we met, too."

"Really?" Nate smiled.

"Yeah. I just had always gone by the code that you don't date your partner, so I tried to push you from my mind. That's why I dated Bryan....but you know something? It didn't work. I was miserable the whole weekend. All I could think of was you, and how you tried to get me out of the church, knowing that you would be killed. You had every intention of sacrificing your own life to spare mine. I realized then that you were the only person on the planet that I KNEW would do that. And that's why I broke up with Bryan that weekend." CD said.

Nate held CD's hands in his, and said, "Well, since we're talking about that, uhh...that night when you left? I felt devastated. I went to the Anchorside to deaden the pain, and I ended up telling a complete stranger that I liked you."

Now CD was the one to say, "Really?" There was a silence for a while, until CD said, "I kept the whistle."

"What whistle?"

"The whistle you used when you were undercover as the coach. You gave it to me, and I still have it."

"Wow. I can't believe you still have that."

Without skipping a beat, CD said, "Nate, WHY did you date Lily?"

Nate looked into CD's questioning, confused eyes, and took a deep breath.

Nate looked into CD's questioning, confused eyes, and took a deep breath. "I guess the same reason as why you dated Bryan. Lily asked me out, and I didn't know what to do. I all but begged you to give me a reason as to why I shouldn't go out with her."

"I was scared."

"I know. Well, at the end of the day, I asked you if you would like to have dinner with me. I'm still not sure if I was asking you out or not. Anyway, you said you already had a date and left. So, I figured that you didn't want to have a relationship with me, so I may as well move on."

CD was quiet for a minute, and then asked, "How did that breakup really happen with her? We never really talked about it."

Nate thought for a bit before he answered. "I figured out that she was planning this surprise for my birthday. I just couldn't let her be that way for me anymore. It just wasn't fair to her....She knew, CD. She knew all along."

"No, duh. The woman practically threatened me that time I had you guys over for dinner."

"What? When did that happen?" Nate was shocked.

"Oh, you know, when you had your head in my toilet. But go on with what you were saying," CD replied with a smirk.

"She threatened you? Geez, she's worse that I thought!"

CD snorted. "No kidding. But really, go on with what you were saying."

Nate shook his head in bewilderment. After a pause, he continued. "Well, anyway, then when I came to you and told you that we broke up, I was really hoping that you would give me some sign that you felt the same way about me. Imagine what went through my head at your response."

"I made up for it, though," CD said with a seductive smile.

"That, you did. Boy, did you make up for it." Nate and CD laughed.

Soon, their dinner arrived. They had a long, leisurely dinner. Afterwards, they took a moonlit stroll along the Bay. Hand-in-hand they walked, talking and enjoying each other's company. The water was beautiful, and the lights of the city dotted the scenery. It truly felt magical. CD said to Nate, "You've already told me about falling in love with me, now I want to tell you about falling in love with you."

He glanced at her and said, "OK."

CD continued. "Well, like I said before, the church bombing really turned a corner for me, too. Then, remember earlier this year when we had the drug case with your old partner? Well, I don't like to admit this, but...I kind of felt...jealous!"

Nate chuckled. "You didn't have to worry about me, honey. I knew who I wanted to be with," he said as he smiled at her.

CD then said, "Still, that's how it was. Then, the whole Lily thing came along, and so often...I don't know...I just didn't like seeing the two of you together, or thinking about the two of you together---"

"CD," Nate cut her off, "I never cared about Lily, even in the same ball park as to how much I love you. You are the most amazing woman in the world. I can't believe how lucky I am to have you in my life, for you to feel the same way about me as I do about you."

A tear of joy slid down CD's cheek, which Nate brushed away, and CD said, "No one's ever said that to me before, not even Paul."

"Paul was a damned idiot," Nate replied.

CD looked into his soft hazel-green eyes and smiled. She hugged him, and then their lips locked for a moment of passion.

The next day was Saturday. Nate spent the morning doing his laundry and cleaning up his apartment a little bit. Then he picked up his dry cleaning and headed over to CD's apartment. He knocked, but didn't hear anything, so he let himself in. 'I wonder where she went?' he thought, and walked into the kitchen to look for her. He saw some paper lying on the table, and thought that maybe it was a note. He looked down at it, and read it. A huge, goofy grin spread across his face at the sight of it. CD had doodled every possible combination of their two names, most with her last name being Basso. He then heard the water running in the bathroom, so he carefully tiptoed back to the front door and loudly slammed it shut. "Hello? CD? I'm here!" he called.

CD emerged from the hallway, smiling. "Hi, honey. I missed you," CD said and kissed him on the cheek.

"I missed you more," Nate said with a devilish grin and kissed her on the lips.

CD smiled again and licked her upper lip. "Come on, I made lunch," she said to him.

"You did? You cooked? You must be feeling better!"

"Well, I got a little more TLC than usual."

Nate said, "True." Nate followed CD into the kitchen, making sure not to look in the direction of the paper on the table. CD spotted it soon, though, gave a little gasp under her breath, and smoothly whisked it from the table. Nate noticed and smiled to himself. They sat down at the table, and helped themselves to the chicken salad that CD had made.

After they were finished eating, Nate helped CD out with the chores, and then went to the zoo. They spent several hours there, walking and holding hands the whole time. However, they didn't really notice the animals, they were so caught up in each other and enraptured in their mutual love. Nate and CD then went to dinner, and picked up a movie on DVD at the video rental store. Nate took CD back to his apartment and put the movie into the player. They again cuddled as they laid together on the sofa, and Nate spread a soft quilt over them. CD could hardly believe that she had the right to be this happy, something that she had never experienced to this extent before. She could feel Nate's strong, muscular arms around her. Her head lay on his broad chest, and she smiled as Nate stroked her hair. She knew that he was her soul mate, and she was his. Nate, too, was amazed at how his life was turning out. Here she was, finally, his CD, the love of his life, lying in his arms, completely his. Everytime he looked at her, she took his breath away. He then remembered how not even two weeks before, he had almost lost her, and shuddered. "You're a wonderful birthday present, you know that? The best I've ever gotten," Nate said with a sly smile.

CD just smiled back. "Tomorrow's your birthday," she murmured.

"Mmm hmm."

"I want you to sleep til noon, and then just wait and see."

"You're not planning a party, are you?" Nate toyed with her.

"Oh, come ON, give me a little credit." CD responded as she lightly punched his arm.

The next day, Nate did sleep until noon. He wouldn't admit it, but he was still exhausted from the ordeal and stress of CD's trauma and recovery. He showered, shaved, and dressed, and then went into the kitchen to have a cup of coffee while he read the newspaper. About 1 pm, he heard a familiar knock at the door and opened it.

"Happy birthday, Nate!" CD exclaimed with a huge grin on her face. She was carrying a shopping bag.

Nate smiled and kissed her. "Thanks, CD, come on in. Did you drive yourself here?"

"No, Nate, I hitch-hiked. I hopped on a motorcycle with a guy with 100 tattoos and piercings and joined his gang." Nate laughed, and then CD said, "I told you one of these days I would get you back good."

"Yes, you did. For my joke about the Julio's quesadillas thing. I remember. What I meant though, was, do you think you should be driving in your condition?"

"I'm fine, Nate. I have to get back into the swing of things sooner or later. Also, I'm getting my stitches out and going back to work tomorrow."

"I know. I'm so excited that you and I are going to be working together again. Although," Nate said, with a devilish glint in his eye, "I do enjoy our current arrangement more." He then wrapped his arms around her and spun her around.

CD giggled, "Oh, Nate! Stop it! I'm holding a bag with a cake!"

"Oh, who needs cake---I can live on my Candy!" he said as he kissed her neck.

CD giggled some more, "I mean it, Nate, stop it!" She started to completely laugh, hoping that he wouldn't stop.

Nate did soon come to his senses and let her go. "You brought me a cake? From where?"

"From me, silly! I made it!"

"No, really, you made it? Wow, CD, I feel so special that you would do that for me!"

"Well, get used to feeling special, honey. I'm here and you only turn 32 once!" CD carried the bag to the table. "In honor of your birthday, I brought some things that I know you like. We're having nachos, and here, put this on." She popped a party hat onto his head, and then put one on her own. "And just wait and see what happens when you try to blow out your candles."

Nate laughed and took CD into his arms, burying his face in her hair. "You know me too well, Candace DeLorenzo."

After CD and Nate had lunch and birthday cake, CD said, "Now, what do you want to do with today? I think the game is on."

Nate could hardly believe that it was possible for her to know him so well. Often, they knew just by looking at each other what the other was thinking. Nate replied, "Well, do you want to see the game? Because I don't have to see it, if you don't want to."

"Of course I want to see it! And geez, Nate, it's your birthday, let's do what you want to do for a change!" CD really didn't care that much about sports, but she loved Nate and wanted him to be happy. He had been so attentive to her for the last couple of weeks, completely denying himself.

They spent the afternoon in cuddling together, watching the game. Afterwards, they went out to dinner, followed by another long walk along the Bay. They were so happy being together, and thankful that they were together.

The next morning, Nate came by CD's apartment early to pick her up and take her to the doctor to get her stitches taken out. She greeted him at the door with a sweet kiss. CD felt close to normal again, since she was dressed for work for the first time in a while. After Nate and CD kissed, CD put on her holster and trench coat. She picked up her tote bag and they were out the door.

Nate waited at the hospital waiting room while CD had her stitches taken out. When it was finished, she came back to the waiting room. "Hey---Doc said that I'm doing great! Healing well. I can go back to work now, but I can't do anything physical like running or arrresting bad guys for a few weeks." she said with a smirk.

Nate breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. "No problem. I'll take care of everything."

"Oh, you already do," she replied.

They returned to the SFPD building and walked through the lobby to the elevator. Officers waved to CD and welcomed her back. When Nate and CD walked through the door of the felony division, everybody there, including Cap, Jinny, Magda, and Raina cheered for CD. She blushed, and Captain and the 3 women inspectors took turns hugging her. Kate said to her, "It's good to see you back, CD. We missed you."

CD replied, "It's good to be back."

Jinny said to her, "It hasn't been the same around here without you. I'm glad that you're doing so much better. And... (in a low voice)...by the way, if you hadn't killed Liz, I would have hunted her down and finished the job myself. I don't have a problem with that type of stuff."

CD laughed. "No, you don't. Well, thank goodness we don't have to worry about our 'dear Marshal friend' anymore!"

Magda came to CD, "Are you sure that you're feeling up to this? I know that it's tough coming back to this after you've been shot."

"And nobody knows that better than you," CD said with a smirk. "But yeah, I'm fine. I'm glad that I finally have something to do."

Finally, Raina came up to CD, glanced at Nate, and grinned. "I can't tell you how relieved I am that you're OK. Let me know if you need any help with anything."

"Thanks, Raina, but I'm sure I'll be fine. Nate's here."

"Oh, he sure is," Raina replied as she glanced at him again, and smiled.

CD raised an eyebrow and looked at Nate expectantly. He raised his eyebrows and shrugged. "What?" he said, while laughing on the inside. CD just gave a little exasperated smile, and sat down at her desk to work.

The rest of the week went by as usual, with the exception of Nate and CD's partnership that had become personal as well as professional. They made a point to spend time together as a couple every day, and they felt their love grow even more every day.

Late Friday afternoon, Nate said to CD, "CD, I'd like to take you someplace special tomorrow night for dinner."

"Oooh, that sounds nice. What's the occasion? "

"Us! We are the occasion," Nate replied with a wink. CD winked back at him. Nate continued, "And I, uhhhh....thought that maybe...we could, uh you know....kind of...go dancing?"

CD laughed. "Dancing? Really---you want to dance."

"Well, I'm not Fred Astaire, but I think I've got shuffling around the floor while hanging onto a woman down pat."

CD grinned and said, "I'm not Ginger Rogers, either, but...that sounds like fun. I'd love to go dancing with you."

"Great. I'll pick you up around 6."

"OK." CD leaned over to Nate, held his chin, and kissed him. "I love you, Nate."

"I love you, CD."

The next day, at a couple of minutes before 6, Nate came to CD's apartment to pick her up for their date. She came to the door wearing a simple, yet elegant long-sleeved black dress. Nate exclaimed, "Wow, CD, you look beautiful."

He kissed her and she said with a teasing grin, "Thanks. You don't look half bad yourself." Nate just smiled. CD threw on her light blue coat and scarf, and they left.

Nate and CD arrived at the restaurant, which was beautiful and intimate. They sat at a booth in a small, tucked-away cozy corner, and ordered their food. "Nate, this place is gorgeous. Isn't it expensive, though?"

"It's not too bad. Besides, it's OK, CD, you're worth it."

CD smiled and they held hands across the table. They gazed into each other's eyes as they talked, and didn't even care that anyone around them could see that they were deeply in love. "I know that I said this earlier, but you sure do look gorgeous, CD. I don't know what it is, you hair, your eyes, your smile, the way your body looks in that dress---everything about you is amazing."

CD smiled and said, "Maybe it's because I'm looking at you, who happens to be the best looking guy in this place!"

Now Nate was the one to blush and smile. "I still wake up every morning and pinch myself, because I can't believe that this is real. Is this really happening?!"

"Oh, it's happening, my friend." CD replied and kissed him. He kissed her back, full of passion and love. CD then said, "You know what I think ultimately won me over that day in the park? Your kiss. Wow. You are such a good kisser! I'm glad that I found that out."

"I'm glad that you gave me the opportunity to show you," Nate responded with a smirk.

"Show-off!" CD laughed.

"Hey, can't blame a guy for trying!"

Nate and CD ate their dinner, while murmuring more sweet nothings to each other. When they finished, Nate paid the check and they returned to the car. Nate pulled out a sleep shade and snapped it onto CD's head.

"Whoa! What's this?!" CD exclaimed.

Nate smiled and said, "I don't want you to see where we're going. It's a surprise. You trust me, don't you?"

"Of course, I trust you. Let's go." Nate drove for about 10 minutes, and then parked and helped CD get out. He led her by the hand to his place of destination. When he reached it, he put his hands around her waist, picked her up, and then set her down on her bottom. Then he sat down next to her and pulled the sleepshade off. "Where are we---oh my god! It's 'our table' at Alamo Square!" CD exclaimed.

"Yup." Nate replied with a grin, and his eyes sparkled with joy. It was where they had first confessed their true feelings to each other. Nate got off the table, and then knelt down on one knee. He took CD's hands in his own, and looked into her sapphire eyes. "I love you, CD. I love you with all my heart and soul, with every fiber of my being, and I will until the end of time. Now, I know that I'm not perfect, but I promise to always protect you, always cherish you, and I would lay down my life for you." Nate pulled a small black box out of his coat pocket and said, "CD, will you marry me?" He opened up the box to reveal a beautiful white gold ring, with a princess cut diamond solitaire.

CD gasped and her mouth widened to a huge smile. "Nate, I would love to marry you. I love you." Nate flashed a brilliant smile, and slid they ring onto CD's left ring finger. They leaned close and kissed passionately, wrapping their arms around each other, and forgetting the world beyond the two of them. CD finally whispered, "You really think that you can put up with me for the next 50 years?" and laughed.

"It will be an honor," Nate replied.

Half an hour later found CD and Nate at a dancing night club. They had a glass of champagne and moved to the dance floor. The band was playing, and Nate and CD clumsily tried to ease into it, as neither was very comfortable with dancing. Soon the music switched to a slow, romantic song, "Our Love Is Here To Stay". Nate put his arm around CD's waist, and took hold of her right hand with his left. CD placed her left arm around Nate's shoulder, and her new diamond ring sparkling in the light. They swayed and stepped to the music, and the lyrics swirled around the room:

Not for a year, but ever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies,
That we know,
May just be passing fancies,
That in time may go.
But, oh, my dear, our love is here to stay

Nate and CD smiled at the thought of how true the song was for them. When it ended, Nate dipped CD and then kissed her. They laughed and continued dancing to the following numbers.

CD said to Nate when they were dancing, "So....when do you want to get married?"

"I was hoping fairly soon, I mean, I don't want to wait another half a year to marry you, or something."

CD smiled, and said, "Valentine's Day is on a Saturday this year." She had a glint in her eye.

"Sounds fantastic," Nate replied, and started kissing down her neck.

CD giggled. "I take that as a yes?!" CD said.

"Absolutely." They danced some more, and Nate said, "Wow. I can't believe that here we are, you and me, engaged."

CD's eyes were closed, and her head tucked next to Nate's. "Mmm-hmm." she murmured.

"You know, from the first day that I met you, I've dreamed of this moment."

"Oh, you did not!" CD said with a laugh.

"Fine, don't believe me." he replied with a grin. "It's still true, though."

CD laid in her bed that night, gazing at her ring, holding Nate's picture, and smiling. She had already drawn a gigantic heart around February 14th on her calendar, and written, "Nate and I get get married." She could still feel herself dancing in his arms, and the touch of his lips on hers. She felt way too excited to sleep. Her mind was racing, constantly replaying Nate's perfect proposal.

Meanwhile, Nate, too, couldn't sleep. He held CD's picture and stared at it. He knew that CD was the woman for him. He realized that before her, he didn't know what love was. One thing nagged at his brain, though. They would have to tell Kate about their relationship. He desperately didn't want to have to get a new partner, he wanted to always work with CD. Even more than that, though, he didn't want CD to have to go through another partner change. He was the first partner that she had had that had actually worked out well.

CD finally gave up and picked up the phone. She dialed Nate's number, and he picked up. "Hello?"

"Hi, handsome." CD said.

Nate smiled. "Hi, gorgeous. What's up?"

"Nothing, just I couldn't sleep. Gee, I wonder why?" she said with a laugh.

Nate laughed, too. "Well, I know that there's this incredible woman in my life right now, and thoughts of her marrying me has kept me awake. Can you guess who she might be?"

"Oh, let me guess, let me guess. Well, I've been seeing this tall blonde with blue eyes hanging around you a lot lately....heck, for years...Now, let's see...I think her name starts with a 'C' and ends with a 'D'!"

"Awww, you guessed!"

"Seriously, Nate, I called just to hear the sound of your voice. It's not everyday that I get proposed to, you know."

"I should hope not!" he said with a smirk. "CD...I hate to bring this up, but we are going to have to tell Cap soon. It was hard enough having to hide it last week, but now that we're engaged..."

"We need to tell her. I know. I'm so happy, and want to share it with everyone. I want everyone to know that I love you, and you love me, but it's just so hard..." CD replied.

"CD, I hate to think of you suffering consequences because of this---"

"Nate, listen up straight---I don't CARE what the consequences are. You are worth the risk. I knew what I was doing when I first kissed you. I knew that I was taking a leap, and I could never return. But I knew that I loved you, and that was good enough for me....Let's tell Cap together, Monday morning."

"OK...and, CD, thanks."

"Thanks for what?"

"For everything. For being my friend, for caring for me, for loving me...for agreeing to marry me."

"My pleasure. Thank YOU, Nate."

Monday morning, Nate and CD arrived at the division. They sat down at their desks, facing each other, and sifted through their mail and messages. They both thought how this might be the last time they did that together. Nate spoke quietly to CD, so no one could hear, "It'll be OK. We'll just go in, explain it to her, and with luck, we can stay partners. But even if that doesn't happen, we will still be partners for life." CD smiled and squeezed his hand. They got up and walked into Kate's office, then took their seats across from her.

"Well, hi. What can I do for you?' Kate said, looking surprised.

Nate and CD looked at each other. Kate knew what was coming, that it had finally happened. Nate said, "We, uh, need to talk to you about something."

"What about?" Kate played dumb.

Nate and CD looked at each other again, and then looked at Kate. "We're getting married." they said in unison.

Kate looked blankly at them. "I see...."

This made Nate and CD smile back. "What do you mean?" CD asked.

"Let's just say I've been around the block a few times. I know the signs."

Then Nate said, "Um, Captain, I know that there are rules about partners having relationships. But I would like to say that CD and I make a great team. I think the department would suffer a great loss if we were separated."

CD jumped in. "And, I think that our partnership could only get better with our new situation."

Kate paused and then said, "I have actually thought about what I would say at this meeting for a long time now. And I have gone back and forth with myself on the subject. But then I saw the two of you at the hospital when you were wounded....I've decided that I can't keep kids apart. Even if I wanted to, you guys wouldn't be the same. So go."

Nate and CD grinned broadly. "Oh, thank you, thank you so much." CD said, while shaking her hand.

"Cap, we're so grateful," Nate said and shook her hand as well. "You won't regret it."

"I'd better not," Kate replied, half joking and half serious. "Just promise me one thing..."

"What is it?" CD asked.

"No major PDA around the office, OK? I'm going out on a limb for you two."

"Sure. Anything." Nate replied.

On the way out, CD said, "Oh, the wedding is February 14th. You're invited," and grinned. Nate and CD felt like they were walking on clouds as they walked through the bullpen. Jinny and Magda were sitting at their desks, and just then Raina walked in with her latte.

CD nodded to Nate, and he called out, "Hey, everybody! CD and I would like to tell you all something."

Raina grinned, and Jinny and Magda looked at each other and smirked. Jinny said to Magda, "Guess YOU get to be the bridesmaid, this time."

CD announced to the room, "Nate gave me a very special gift, last Saturday night," and held up her left hand. Everyone in the room congratulated them, but most were not surprised. Jinny, Magda, and Raina came up to them, hugged them and inspected the ring.

"Hey, congratulations, guys. You two deserve it!" Jinny exclaimed.

Nate said to the 3 women, "You are all invited to the wedding. It's on Valentine's Day. We haven't decided where yet, though."

Raina squealed. "Ohhhh! How ROMANTIC! Let me know if I can help you with the plans at all."

"Thanks, Raina," CD said.

Then Magda said, "I'm so happy for you. You certainly belong together."

CD and Nate looked at each other, and put their arms around each other's waists as they stood side-by-side. Nate replied, "Yeah, we think so, too." CD grinned and they kissed.

For the next couple of weeks, CD and Nate spent a lot of their free time planning and scheduling their wedding. Even though it was going to be small and simple, since it was a second marriage for both of them, it still took a lot of effort. Eventually, they had everything confirmed, the invitations addressed, stamped, and ready to mail, and they could just relax. They loved their arrangement of working days together, just like they always had. They still joked around and flirted as usual, but now the flirting was quite a bit more intimate. They spent their evenings together as well, just basking in the glow of their love. One evening in January, while Nate held CD in his arms as they lounged on his sofa, he said, "I was thinking, Sweetie...."

"Hmmm."

"I've been living in an apartment my entire adult life, and so have you, and now that we're getting married...."

"We should buy a house," CD said, finishing Nate's sentence.

Nate smiled to himself, as he was reminded once again how they were made for each other. "Yeah."

"Sure, I mean, we have to live somewhere. We should start our life together in a place that's new to both of us."

Nate then said, "Mmm hmmm. Plus, we really should invest our money, and not burn it on rent."

CD happily thought how strange it sounded for Nate to say, "our money." She liked it. She felt peace and contentment at the realization that she didn't have to be a tough woman on her own anymore. She had Nate, and she knew that she could trust him in everything. CD said, "We'll go house shopping Saturday, then."

By the next Saturday afternoon, Nate and CD found themselves standing in someone's living room with a realtor. CD said to the realtor, "I'm sorry, but nothing we've seen today really interests us. Is there anything else?"

The realtor replied, "OK, I'll run another search and we can try again tomorrow.

"Thanks," CD flatly stated and glanced at Nate.

He looked back at her, as if they could read each other's minds. As they left, Nate put his arm around CD's shoulder. "It'll work out, honey. We'll find something."

"I know. It's just that the pricing in this city is ridiculous. It's kind of depressing."

"Yeah, I know. But we'll find just what we need."

The next day, Nate and CD were shown to another house. CD was pleasantly surprised with the exterior---it was a white split-level with blue trim and a blue front door. Plants grew around the front of the house. Nate was impressed, as well. The realtor lef them inside, and she said, "I really think that you'll like this one. This is its first day on the market, and it's in your price range. The living room has a fireplace, cable hookup, and a picture window with a view." They began to walk through the house, and she continued, "There's crown moulding throughout, and it's all new carpet. The dining room and kitchen are newly refinished hardwood, and there's plenty of storage space and counters. Upstairs, there's a second floor laundry room and 3 bedrooms. 2 bedrooms share a bath, and the master bedroom has its own."

Nate and CD walked into the master bath and spotted a jacuzzi tub. Nate's eyes shifted to CD, raised his eyebrow, and smirked. CD saw the look on his face and her cheeks turned pink as she smiled. CD turned to the realtor and said, "I think we'd like to make a bid." Nate chuckled in response.

The deal went through and several weeks later found CD and Nate painting their house. They went to the paint and wallpaper store and decided which colors they wanted where. As they painted, they found themselves having a lot of fun together. CD pinched Nate's butt and said, "You look so darn cute in those jeans, sweetie."

Nate pinched CD back and said, "You look even cuter."

CD smiled and Nate nuzzled her neck and kissed along her jawline and neck. CD's hands held his head. "Oooh, Nate, have I ever told you what a great kisser you are?"

"Yeah, but not today."

CD laughed and lifted his face back up to hers and kissed his lips. After a while, CD said, "You know, if we want to get this done before the wedding, we'd better get back to it."

Nate looked back at her with a smile on his face. "What was that, honey? I'm sorry, but after you said, 'wedding,' everything else just kind of went under water!"

CD heard her alarm clock and looked at it to see the time. As she turned it off she grinned with joy. 'Today is my wedding day. Today is the day Nate and I will be husband and wife forever,' CD thought. She got out of bed and jumped into the shower. When she got out, she heard a knock at her door. CD put on her robe and wrapped her hair in a towel and answered it. There were Jinny, Magda, and Raina, right on schedule. When CD opened the door, they immediately began to sing, "Happy wedding day to you, happy wedding day to you, happy wedding day to CD and Nate, happy wedding day to you!"

CD started laughing. The other women came in, carrying their dresses. CD said, "Aww, you guys! That was so funny, you guys singing. I must say, I don't think I've ever heard that version before!" She laughed, and the others laughed with her.

Raina said, "OK, let's get to work! We've got a wedding to get ready for!" They then spent the morning and early afternoon playing "beauty parlor." They all did facials, makeup, hair, nails, and got dressed. Jinny and Magda each thought about their own wedding days, and how they knew that Nate and CD's marriage would be better than their own. CD and Nate had been partners and friends for two years before they got together, something that Jinny and Magda hadn't had with their husbands. Raina, meanwhile, was dreaming about her own future wedding. She didn't know who she would marry yet, but she still yearned for the same kind of closeness that she saw in CD and Nate.

Nate, meanwhile, was "directing traffic" at the wedding site, making sure that everything was running according to plan. He breathed a prayer of thanks for the weather---it was fairly warm for Valentine's Day, and not a cloud in the sky.

CD, Jinny, Magda, and Raina arrived at the wedding. It looked beautiful. A large white tent was set up at an outdoor spot near the San Francisco Bay, and white icicle lights were strung across the ceiling of the tent. Chairs were lined up in rows, each chair with a white slipcover and adorned with a gardenia. The string quartet was warming up, and guests began to arrive. Kate and Louis were already there, as well as Gabe, Ben, Nate's parents, his sister, Irene, and her friend. Magda looked around at the crowd, and asked CD, "Where's your mom? Isn't she coming?"

"Um, no. I actually didn't invite her."

"Why wouldn't you invite your own mom?"

CD grimaced and replied, "Long story. Let's just say she has caused me a lot of pain, and I don't want any pain on the happiest day of my life."

"Oh. Well, sorry I brought it up," Magda responded.

It was time. Jinny, Magda, and Raina lined up with the groomsmen, and CD stood behind them. The string quartet began to play "Canon in D", and two by two, the couples walked down the aisle, slowly. The bridesmaids wore long periwinkle gowns with matching jackets, and clutched small bouquets of gardenias trimmed with pink ribbon. They took their places at the front, and then everyone stood up. CD appeared, wearing a knee-length white dressy suit. She carried a bouquet of pale pink roses, and her hair was upswept and curled, the way it was at Magda's wedding. She looked like an angel. Nate stood at the front in his black suit, and a huge smile came across his face as he saw her. He could hardly believe tht this was for real, and not one of his dreams. 'I am the luckiest man on the planet,' he thought. CD gazed at him as she walked down the aisle, and the two of them never broke eye contact. She herself could hardly believe that this was happening, and she was ecstatic that it was. She almost couldn't identify of her old logic of not having a relationship with Nate. Now, she realized, she wouldn't trade this for anything. CD arrived at the front, handed her bouquet to Jinny, and joined hands with Nate. They quietly giggled about it, at first.

The minister said the preliminary niceties before he got to the vows. Then he said to Nate, "Do you, Nathan, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

Nate's gaze still on CD, he said decidedly, "I do."

The minister then said, "Do you, Candace, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

"I do." CD replied, and grinned at Nate. She was so thrilled.

"Nate, repeat after me," said the minister. "I, Nathan, take you, Candace, to be my lawfully wedded wife."

Nate repeated it, squeezing CD's hands, and continued repeating after the minister, "For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in health, 'til death do us part."

CD fough to keep from crying. She, too, repeated after the minister, "I, Candace, take you Nathan, to be my lawfully wedded husband. For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in health, 'til death do us part."

A few tears now slid down her cheek. Nate took the ring and held it on CD's finger, and said, "With this ring, as a token of my love and affection, I thee wed." Nate then slid it down her finger.

CD took the other ring and placed it on Nate's finger. "With this ring, as a token of my love and affection, I thee wed."

The minister then said, "By the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." Nate and CD grinned, wrapped their arms around each other, and passionately kissed. Everyone clapped, and as Nate dipped CD, they cheered. When they finally came up for air, the minister said, "It is my privilege to announce for the first time, Mr. and Mrs. Nate Basso!" Hand in hand and grinning broadly, Nate and CD walked back up the aisle.

After taking some pictures by the Bay, Nate and CD joined their guests at the restaurant's banquet room. They did away with most of the usual wedding reception customs, but did have cake, and CD threw her bouquet to the few single women there.
when Raina caught it, CD smiled as she remembered how she had caught the bouquet at Magda's wedding almost 2 years before. She remembered that when Nate saw it, he had winked at her and grinned.

After dinner and dessert were over, Nate and CD simultaneously cast their eyes over each other. Their eyes locked, again reading each other's minds. It didn't take much to figure this thought out, though. They began their "thank yous" and "goodbyes." When they came to Nate's sister Irene, she said, "I knew that you two would end up together. Remember when I said that you looked good together and should go out?'

Nate and CD chuckled, and Nate replied, "Well, you see, I agreed with you at the time. This one here, though, needed a little more convincing!" He smiled and kissed CD on the cheek.

CD giggled and said, "I should have listened to you sooner, Irene!"

"Wow, I must be good. Who's next?" Irene said and was off in another direction.

CD leaned over to Nate and planted a big kiss on his lips. "I REALLY think we should go now, honey," she said and lifted her eyebrow with a "come hither" look.

That was all Nate needed to hear. He immediately grasped her hand, grinned, and loudly announced to the room, "Goodnight, everybody!"

They then ran out of the restaurant, dodging all the rice and confetti being thrown at them as they went. Jinny and Raina had written "Just Married" on the rear window of their car and taped streamers to the back. Nate and CD got into the car, kissed again, and drove to the hotel for their wedding night.

They arrived at the hotel, and Nate was glad that he had checked in earlier and put their stuff in their room. Nate and CD, hand in hand, walked through the lobby and got into the elevator. They began to neck and send their hands over each other's bodies. The elevator stopped at the top floor, and they got out and walked towards the honeymoon suite. Nate put the card into the lock and opened the door. By this point they couldn't keep their hands off of each other. "And here, Mrs. Basso, my gorgeous, sexy wife, is our suite," said Nate, as they stood outside the door.

"Mmm hmm, my incredible husband, you!" CD joked and laughed. Nate picked her up in his arms and carried CD into the room. He kicked the door shut behind him. A sign swung from the doorknob, reading "Do Not Disturb."

Nate carried CD into the honeymoon suite. He lowered her onto the big, soft bed and started kissing her passionately. CD groaned and pulled his jacket off. She let it drop to the floor and began to work on the buttons on his shirt. Nate eased next to her and started to undress her as well. CD's mouth traveled across his face and was now down his neck, while she simultaneously tried to get his belt off. Soon the rest of their clothes were in a heap on the floor. "Oh, god, CD, I love you so much...." Nate moaned into her hair.

"I love you, more," CD replied and scattered kisses across his chest.

"That's impossible. No one could ever love anyone more than I love you."

"Oh, shut up and kiss me," CD purred with a grin.

"You got it," Nate said and brought his lips back up to hers. Their hands started to roam to each other's most sensitive spots, and they made love for hours.

Sunlight streamed in through the picture window of Nate and CD's honeymoon suite. The sunbeams crossed Nate's face and he slowly opened his eyes. He looked beside him at CD, who laid there sleeping, her arm draped across his chest. Nate smiled as he watched her. He thought about how glad he was to wake up and see his CD beside him. He could smell her sweet, heady fragrance, and feel her soft, smooth, bare skin against his. 'She looks like an angel,' he thought. He slowly slipped out of the king sized bed and got up to brush his teeth, not wanting to gross her out with his morning breath, just yet. He eased back under the covers, snuggled up next to CD, and closed his eyes. Just then CD slowly woke up. She opened her eyes and looked over at her new husband, her Nate. There he was, his arm wrapped around her, holding her tight. She smiled as she thought back to their wedding night, remembering how amazing it had been. She, too, got out of bed to brush her teeth and then got back in, pretending that she always woke up with minty fresh breath. When she slid back in next to Nate, he kissed her.

"Hi," CD said and gazed into his eyes.

"Good moring, sunshine," Nate said.

CD held her hands together behind Nate's neck as he supported himself above her. "This is our first morning together as husband and wife," CD murmured.

"Ooooh, I like the sound of that," Nate replied with a devilish grin. CD smiled and kissed him on the lips, and then kissed down his jawline. Nate said, "Did I tell you how fantastic you were last night?"

"About 12 times! So were you, by the way."

Nate smiled and kissed CD back. They began to pepper each other with kisses, and their hands started to roam.

A couple of hours later, now showered and clad in white terry cloth bath robes, CD and Nate enjoyed their breakfast on the balcony. As they sat and ate, they talked and watched the gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge. After they finished, they got ready to leave for their honeymoon cruise.

Nate and CD stood with their luggage at the cruise's check-in counter. As the clerk processed their information, Nate and CD barely took their eyes off of each other. They stood and gazed, whispered, giggled, nuzzled, and touched. They were so overcome with happiness, that they were oblivious to the world around them. The clerk watched and and said with a smile, "Let me guess---you folks are on your honeymoon?"

CD grinned and answered, "Yeah."

The clerk grinned again and replied, "Well, in that case, I'll upgrade you to one of our honeymoon suites.

Nate and CD exchanged a surprised, yet pleased look. "Wow, thanks! " Nate exclaimed.

Nate and CD found their room and dragged their suitcases-on-wheels inside. "Nate, look at this place!" CD said. The suite had a seating area, eating area, kitchenette, bathroom with a jacuzzi, and the bedroom had a California king sized waterbed.

"I think this place is bigger than my apartment!" Nate laughed.

They unpacked and walked out to the deck. CD and Nate leaned on the railing and watched as the ship pulled away from the port. The view of the Bay and the city was magnificent from the angle. Nate stetched his arm across CD's shoulders and held her as they watched. The mist blew on their faces and got them wet, but they only laughed at it. They were together, and knew that they would be forever. Nate said, "CD?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks for marrying me."

CD looked into his eyes and smiled. "You're welcome. And, uh, as long as we're on the subject---thanks for marrying me, Nate."

"I love you, CD."

Their lips brushed against each other and CD breathed against Nate's lips, "I love you, too, Nate." Just then their lips locked and they kissed long and passionately.

"We should go try out that jacuzzi," Nate murmured with a sly smile.

CD smiled back. "Yep, we should."

CD and Nate tried out both the jacuzzi and waterbed, making sure to take full advantage of both. They lay sprawled together between the satin sheets, slightly rocking with the movement of the ocean. CD's head and arm rested on Nate's muscular chest. Nate's arms enveloped CD, and he caressed her soft, fair hair. CD felt so loved and safe in Nate's strong arms. "I must say, this is the best time off work I've had in a very long time," CD cooed against Nate's skin.

Nate looked down at her and smirked. "You mean you've had this good a time before?"

CD replied with a laugh, "Shut up. You know what I mean!"

Nate just laughed. They lay together in silence for several more minutes, just soaking in the intimacy of the moment. Nate finally said, "CD?"

"Hmm."

"The night you got shot---I knew that you hadn't taken it back."

CD turned and looked at him. She smiled and said, "My, aren't we cocky?!"

"Shut up. You know what I mean!" Nate said, repeating her own words back to her. CD laughed at that. He then continued, "No, seriously, I knew that you would have at least called. You're good about stuff like that. It's one of the things I love the most about you."

"Yeah....But you know, I never did have second thoughts. And I've got to tell you, when I realized that I wasn't going to make it to dinner, I was so pissed!" Nate smiled and and again kissed her. CD said, "Let's go get something to eat---we didn't have any lunch and I'm starving!"

CD and Nate got up and put their clothes back on. CD blew out the candles that Nate had lit earlier, and they left to look for a dining room. Nate said, "See, this is one of the best things about these cruises. It's a nonstop food fest, so you can eat whenever you want!" CD laughed at him, grasped his hand in hers, and they walked to the dining room.

Nate and CD ate their meal together, occasionally taking a break to play "footsie" under the table. They then walked hand in hand around the ship, checking out all the shops, pools, spas, ballrooms, clubs, and activites that the cuise had to offer. Eventually Nate and CD found their way to the front of the ship, and Nate stood behind CD, holding her in his arms. CD rested her hands on his, which were clasped together on her stomach. Nate rested his chin on CD's shoulder. They watched the blue waves and felt the sea breeze blow against them. Nate murmured into CD's hair, "Ever see 'Titanic?'"

CD said with a a half smile, "Don't even JOKE about that!"

Nate laughed. "I don't mean how it ended. Did you see the scene where Jack and Rose stood like this at the front of the ship?"

CD laughed. "Who hasn't?!" She then stretched her arms out to play along. "Hold me, Nate."

Nate laughed again. "Sure, Rose! Um, that is, CD!" He held her, and then CD turned her head and kissed him.

After their moment at the front of the ship, Nate and CD changed into their swimsuits and went to the pool. There weren't any other guests using it at the time, since most people were eating dinner. CD wore a red tankini, and Nate wore navy swim trunks. They jumped into the water. Nate dove under the surface, and swam to where CD was standing. He rose up underneath her, placing her on his shoulders. CD started laughing in surprise. "Nate, what are you doing?" she asked.

"Just having some fun with my bride," he grinned.

They swam together for a while, splashing, playing, and kissing. Eventually they got out and dried off. By this time, they decided that it was time again to return to their cabin for the night.

CD disappeared into the bathroom of their suite. Nate removed his coat and went to light some candles and find some music. He discovered some smooth jazz on the radio, and peeled back the covers of the bed. As he kicked off his shoes and socks, CD emerged. She wore a short, clingy, white negligee and Nate's jaw dropped at the sight of her. "Wow," was all he could say.

"I didn't have time to get this on last night, so, uh, here I am."

"You certainly are." Nate moved closer to her and kissed her. CD unbuttoned his shirt and slid it off his shoulders. Then she grabbed his undershirt and pulled it up and off of him. Nate unbuckled his belt and pulled it off.

CD broke the kiss. "Wait," she said. She went over to her suitcase and snatched a tube of scented body cream. "I thought it might be fun for us to do a little massage, first."

Nate gulped. "Most definately," he managed to get out. Nate picked CD up and placed her gently on the bed.

Nate and CD spent the next day relaxing together. They ate, went swimming, joined in a few cruise activities, and returned to their cabin to rest. CD and Nate sat down on the sofa and turned the TV on. Nate gave a small chuckle.

CD looked at him and said, "What?"

"Nothing. I was just thinking about how the division is getting along without us this week."

CD smiled. "My guess is not too well," she said.

"Yeah, I guess the streets of San Francisco just won't be very safe this week while we're gone."

"Are they ever safe?" CD replied with a laugh.

"Good point," Nate said.

They snuggled up together for a while, enjoying their time alone. Eventually CD looked up at Nate and whispered seductively, "I think the jacuzzi is calling our names."

Nate gave a look of absolute agreement and they got up and walked to the tub. "Actually," Nate said, "It's NAME now. Singular."

"Yeah, well, it takes some getting used to, buddy!" CD said with a smirk. She put both her hands on the sides of his head, pulling his face to hers. "Now come here," she said and kissed him.

An hour later, CD and Nate lay entwined together, wrapped and tangled in the sheets of the bed. Nate mumbled, "I feel SO bad for people that don't have honeymoons!"

CD smiled and said, "Absolutely." She looked down at her stomach, and noticed her small scar. "Um, Nate?"

"Hmm?"

"What do you think of my scar?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, it's just---it's just not very attractive."

Nate looked into her deep blue eyes and smiled. "Nothing about you could ever be anything but attractive. You know what I see when I look at it? I see how much I love you, how close I came to losing you, and how glad I am that you're here with me." CD smiled, and Nate kissed her belly. "You have the most beautiful body on the planet," Nate whispered.

CD replied, "So do you." Nate kissed her, and then CD said, "I love you so much, Nate."

CD and Nate were still lying in bed after their latest rendezvous. Nate gazed at CD and said, "Hey, do you want to so some dinner and dancing?"

"Sounds perfect," she murmured.

They got up and dressed. CD put on a soft, swishy dress and heels---something very unlike her. Nate put on black pants and a white shirt. They found their way to one of the nightlife rooms and ate their steak dinner. They each had a glass of champagne, and Nate said to his wife, "May I have this dance?"

CD replied, "Gosh, I don't know. I'll have to check with my husband."

"YOu have a husband? He must be a very lucky man. I don't think he'll mind if we dance."

'Oh, really? How do you figure?"

"Because I'm him!" Nate said with a laugh.

CD laughed, too, and Nate took her into his arms and swung her out onto the dance floor. They tried to pretend that they knew the current moves, but didn't fool anyone. They were glad when the music switched slower. "Stand By Me" began to play.

That Saturday the cruise ship returned to San Francisco and Nate and CD drove to their new house. Nate pulled the car intot the garage, and they got their luggage out of the back. They walked up to the front door, and CD pulled out her keys and unlocked the door. She opened it, but Nate stopped her before she went in. "Ah-ah-ah," Nate said with a twinkle in his eye. He scooped her up and carried her through the doorway, and then lowered her onto the sofa in the living room.

CD laughed and said, "You DO realize that you've done that already."

"Sure, babe, but not here, yet!" he replied with a grin.

CD just shook her head and watched as Nate carried their stuff inside. They unpacked, and Nate helped CD put a load of laundry into the washing machine. It felt a little strange to CD to be washing Nate's clothes---it was something she hadn't actually thought about before. As she was going through the laundry, she realized something. "Nate, whatever happened to that nice blue shirt of yours? I haven't seen you where it in forever!"

"Oh, I um, donated it to a worthy cause," he answered. He avoided her eyes as he said it.

"Oh," CD said. "Which one?"

"You."

CD looked at him, puzzled. "What are you talking about?"

Nate reluctantly replied, "I used it, trying to stop your bleeding the night you were shot."

"Oh." CD mumbled, and looked away. They sat in silence for a minute, until she said, "We'll get you a new shirt."

"Hey, CD, it's OK, it was just a shirt. I've got other blue shirts."

CD looked back at him. "Well, anyway....thanks."

Nate knew exactly what she meant. "Anytime," he responded. He kept trying to push that awful night from his head, but it seemed to always pop up again.

CD sighed and said, "Hey, you want to go grocery shopping? We need to get some food in this place."

Nate nodded, and then hugged his wife. He gripped her tightly, never wanting to let go. CD held him strong, as well, completely knowing what he was feeling. Sometimes words are inadequate for soul mates.

6 Months Later

CD and Nate's lives were now back to normal. They had been married for half a year now, and loved every day of it. They couldn't be happier with their new life together, and became even better partners on the job. Kate was pleased that the situation was working out, and that she had done the right thing in letting them stay together. Rarely would she have allowed people in a relationship to stay partners, but she knew that CD and Nate were different. To further show her support, while CD and Nate were on their honeymoon, Kate had a new nameplate made for CD's desk, and had her badge changed. They both now proudly stated, "Inspector CD Basso".

One night, CD and Nate lay cuddling in their bed, after sharing an episode of passion (use your imagination, hehe ;) ). CD spoke softly to Nate, "Nate, I've been thinking about something for a while now, and I really want your opinion on this."

"Sure, honey, what is it?"

"Seriously, sweetie, it's really very important."

Hey all, I am soooo sorry that I've been neglecting my fics! This week has been so crazy for me with school and work and my mom nagging me all the time and crap. :( But, here's a little more.

"Nate, I've been thinking about something for a while, and I really want your opinion on this."

"Sure, honey, what is it?"

"Seriously, sweetie, it's really important. I want to get a reverse tubal ligation. I want to get my tubes untied," she answered as she looked into his eyes.

"Wow, I mean, wow...Are you sure? Why?"

"Yeah, I'm positive. After meeting you, my whole whole perspective on kids changed."

"What do you mean?'

"Well, it's just...the reason why I got my tubes tied in the first place was because of Paul. He didn't want kids, and I didn't want to even risk having a child with him, so...But I've seen you around kids. You love them so much, and I know that you want children of your own, even though you haven't pressured me at all. And you know what, Nate? I have discovered that I want to have children, too. I want us to be parents together."

Nate could hardly believe his ears. Was she really saying this? Was his last unfulfilled dream coming true? He'd never mentioned kids to her since he told her his "Cousin Ann Marie" story, because he didn't want to jeapordize the relationship. CD stared at Nate, waiting for him to say something. She hadn't really expected a pause, and started to worry. Suddenly Nate's face lit up, and he hugged her tight. "Oh my god! Oh, CD, I would love that!" he exclaimed happily.

CD grinned and felt extremely happy. She couldn't wait to get the procedure over and done with and start trying for a baby. "We'll be just like your cousin Ann Marie, right?" CD asked.

"Um, Ann Marie? Uh, yeah!" Nate replied.

CD smirked and said, "There never was a cousin Ann Marie, was there?'

Nate got a sheepish look on his face. "Well, I do have a cousin named Ann Marie, but...that never happened." Nate smiled that smile that only he could do.

CD laughed and said, "Color me shocked! That story was just TOO convenient."

"It worked, though, didn't it? It got you thinking."

"Boy, did it ever!"

"I love you so much, CD."

"And I love you." CD turned her back to Nate and pulled his arms around her. They lay there, spooned together, and drifted contentedly to sleep.

A month later, after a consultation between Nate and CD and her gynecologist, and a short stay in the hospital, Nate brought CD home again. 'Deja vu' he thought to himself. But this time was different---this was something that they both wanted desperately, and hoped would work.

Nate and CD walked into their home, and slowly went upstairs. Nate helped CD out of her clothes and pulled a big sleep shirt over her head. He peeled back the soft, fluffy covers of their bed and CD slid in, exhausted. She was still a little drugged, and mumbled to Nate, "If I'd met you 12 years ago, I could have saved myself a LOT of time!" and chuckled.

Nate smiled. "That would have been nice for everyone, love." He pulled off his jacket, shoes, and socks, and laid down next to her. He wrapped his arms around her and said, "I want you to know that I love you so much, CD. I am so grateful about what you've done. I know that it was something that you wanted, too, but this is the best gift you could have ever given me."

Nate kissed her forehead, and she replied, "You're welcome." They closed their eyes and fell asleep.

CD went in to see her gynecologist a month after the surgery for a follow-up appointment. The doctor was pleased with CD's recovery and gave her the go-ahead to start trying for a baby. CD left the doctor's office with an extra lift in her step, and a broad smile on her face. She returned to the division and found Nate at his desk. She walked up behind him, and placed her hands over his eyes. "Guess who?" she asked, with a husky voice.

Nate smiled and said, "Come on, Jennifer, I already told you, I'm a married man!" CD removed her hands from his face and sat down at her desk, across from him. CD laughed, and Nate said, "So, how did it go? How are you doing?"

CD looked into his eyes with a playful smirk and nodded her head. "All systems go," she said.

Nate grinned and replied, "Really? When?"

"Well, I have to check my calendar, but I think I'll be ovulating in 3 days."

Nate grinned, crossed his arms, and leaned back in his chair. "Can't wait," he murmured with a seductive smile.

3 days later, as Nate and CD wrapped up the case that they were working on, Nate whispered into CD's ear, "I'll make dinner tonight."

CD smiled and said, "That sounds great. I've got to go run a few errands, so I'll be home around 7."

CD stopped by the dry cleaners, bank, and drugstore before returning home. Nate, meanwhile, was busy in their kitchen. He made lasagna, salad, and brownies topped with ice cream for dessert. He set the table and poured 2 glasses of wine. Just as Nate pulled the lasagna out of the oven, CD came through the door, carrying their work clothes from the cleaners. She walked into the kitchen, and inhaled the aroma deeply. "Mmm, it smells heavenly in here. And I'm so hungry!"

Nate smiled, and leaned into her. She raised her lips to his and they kissed deeply. Even though they had been together for almost a year now, they still felt like it was that day in the hospital, after Kate's surgery. They broke the kiss and rested their foreheads against each other. "Dinner's ready," Nate said.

"Let me go put this stuff away, and change, and I'll be right back." She grabbed his arm as she left, looking seductively over her shoulder at him.

A few miniutes later she reappeared, wearing jeans and a long sleeved t-shirt. She washed her hands and they sat down at the table. Nate dished the lasagna onto the two plates, and he and CD ate and talked about the day and their case. After they finished eating, they carried their dishes to the counter. When Nate went to go open up the dishwasher, CD grabbed his hand. "No," she said, and gave a sexy smile. "I think it's time we started on our project."

Nate looked back at her, reached for her chin, and pulled it to his face. Their lips met, and then Nate whispered against her lips, "Our best case yet."

CD, still holding Nate's hand, started towards the stairs, and Nate happily followed along behind her. When they reached their bedroom, they began kissing again. Nate's lips started tracing her jaw and neck, as he pulled her shirt over her head. CD stretched her neck to let him kiss her, while her hands were trying to get his clothes off. They fell onto the bed, and quickly got rid of their clothing. Nate's mouth went south to CD's breasts. CD groaned and reached to please him. Nate, of course, was glad to reciprocate. Soon, though, CD moaned, "Oh, Nate, let's make a baby, already!" Nate laughed and glady did as he was asked.

A while later, Nate and CD came back downstairs. CD said, "Now you just go and sit, after that wonderful meal, the least I can do is clean up."

"Thanks," Nate replied and sat on a barstool at the kitchen counter. He held his chin with his hand and grinned.

CD noticed and said with a smirk, "What?"

Nate shook his head. "I was just thinking about the possibility of us becoming a mommy and daddy."

CD laughed. "You are such a cute dork, but at least you're my cute dork." Nate just winked at her.

In 10 minutes, CD was done with the dishes, and Nate scooped up the dessert. They carried their bowls into the living room and watched some TV while they cuddled. Eventually they went to bed, giving the baby-making another try before they fell asleep for the night.

Geez, am I dumb! Sorry, I don't follow sports, so I didn't even think of that! And yeah, I love that ep, too... I remember going crazy when they made it out of the temple and then hugged...I thought to sure they were going to kiss, but no...but my favorite ep would have to be when they finally hooked up! :D

CD and Nate eagerly waited for an event to not happen in 2 weeks. Sure enough, almost 3 weeks later, CD returned from the women's locker room with news. She sat down at her desk, and Nate looked up from the file he was reading. CD looked at him with a serious look, but then quickly changed it to a smile. "I'm late!" she said quietly, but excitedly.

Now Nate got a surprised look and said, "Really? How much?"

"Five days," she replied.

"Is that unusual for you?" he asked, cautiously.

"Oh, yeah. I've only been late a couple of times before," she answered.

"That's so great!" Nate exclaimed, jumped up, and hugged her.

CD grinned but her eyes scanned the room, as the other cops stared at them. "Shhhhh! I'd rather not have the whole division know my menstual cycle, OK?" she whispered. Nate laughed and hugged her more.

On the way home from work that night, Nate and CD stopped by the drug store to pick up an early pregnancy test. As soon as they arrived home, CD went into the bathroom to take it. She emerged again a minute later. Nate was waiting outside the door for her. They walked into the living room, and placed the test strip on the coffee table. "How long does the box say to wait?" Nate asked.

"Three minutes. The stick will turn blue if I'm pregnant," CD said as she set the timer.

Nate said, "Make a wish!"

"I've done that, honey," CD replied with a smile. She sat down next to him on the sofa, and he stretched his arm across her shoulders and held her. They could barely contain themselves, waiting for the stick to turn colors.

After what seemed an eternity, the timer beeped. Nate and CD looked at each other. "On the count of three," Nate said. "1, 2, 3!" CD and Nate turned their eyes to the pregnancy test. "It's the color of your eyes, sweetheart," Nate said with a peaceful smile. The test was blue, blue, blue. CD grabbed the stick and started laughing with joy. They both jumped up from the sofa and hugged each other tight. "We're going to have a baby!" Nate shouted.

"I know! We're going to have a baby! Oh, my god!" CD exclaimed.

Nate then patted CD's temporarily flat belly, and bent down to face it. "Hello, in there! I'm your daddy, and I love you, and I love your mommy, and we can't wait to meet you!"

CD laughed at this, and stroked Nate's hair. Nate lifted CD's sweater up and kissed her tummy. CD pulled him up. "I love you so much, Nate."

"I love you more," Nate said with a grin and passionately kissed her.

When the kiss ended, CD said, "Now, you know, Nate, I do have to get this confirmed. These tests aren't 100% accurate."

"Oh, but I've got a feeling," he replied.

"Me, too," she said, and kissed him again.

The next week, CD sat on her gynecologist's examining table, awaiting the results from her blood test. The doctor entered the room, with a grin on her face. "Mrs. Basso, I have wonderful news for you. You are pregnant!" CD grinned from ear to ear. The doctor continued, "I must say, you are very remarkable. To have had your tubes tied for ten years, then get them untied, and at the age of 35, getting pregnant the first month you try?!"

CD blushed. "Well, I did have a little help!"

"I'll say. Tell your husband congratulations for me. Anyway, here are your prenatal vitamins, and some pamphlets on becoming a mommy, your diet, exercise, nursing, etc. And I'll need to see you regularly to check on the baby."

"Um, what about my job? You know I'm a cop."

"Well, you're an inspector, right? If you don't do a lot of dangerous stuff, you're OK for now. By your third trimester, though, you'll need to go on desk duty."

"Oh, Ok. Glad to hear that." CD said with a sigh of relief.

CD and Nate decided to keep quiet about the pregnancy until CD was 3 months along. They didn't want everyone to be disappointd if she miscarried, and they knew that the minute they told the division, CD would be treated differently. Nate was very protective of her, not wanting anything to happen to her or their baby. Jinny and Magda did notice that Nate and CD were acting a little weird, and that CD seemed to be a lot more nauseated than usual. They didn't say anything to the others, though, because if there was anything to tell, it was Nate and CD's news. Still, they couldn't help but kid each other about it in private.

CD and Nate sat in the ob/gyn's exaimining room, waiting for the doctor. It was CD's 12 week checkup. CD's belly was now slightly rounded, but she could still fit into all of her clothes. The nurse weighed CD and took her blood pressure, then left. CD and Nate were excited, but nervous. This would be the first sonogram. Nate reached for CD's hand, grasped it, and smiled at her. CD smiled back. Just then, the doctor came into the room. "Hello, Inspectors Basso, and how are we feeling today?"

CD smiled and said, "Well, I don't know how WE are, but I think my morning sickness is almost over. I'm doing pretty well, at least for now."

"That's great. Let's go ahead and do the sonogram," the doctor replied.

CD laid down on the table, and the doctor smeared some of the ultrasound jelly on her belly. Nate still held CD's hand, and just listened. The doctor went to work on the ultrasound, and soon, the grainy image of CD's womb appeared on the monitor. Nate and CD were speechless. Nate placed one arm across CD's shoulders while he held her hand with the other. "Oh my gosh," Nate whispered.

"There's our baby," CD murmured. Sure enough, a tiny little baby could be faintly seen on the screen, a little combination of CD and Nate. When the sound kicked in and the heartbeat could be heard, Nate nearly fainted.

"That's its little hearbeat! My baby has a heartbeat!" Nate exclaimed, proudly.

"It's beautiful," CD said. "Our baby is perfect."

"I love you so much, and our baby, too!" Nate said and kissed CD's cheek.

"I love the both of you, too!" CD replied with a giggle. They kissed quickly, knowing that they weren't alone.

The doctor then said, "Now, be thinking about if you want to know the sex of the baby. We'll be able to tell, most likely, by next month."

"Oh really? You'll be able to see next month?" Nate said.

"Probably. Sometimes that baby may hide or cross its legs or something, but we should probably be able to see.

"Can't wait!" Nate replied.

The next morning, CD and Nate arrived at work and walked straight into Kate's office and sat down. Kate looked up at them and said, "Well, you can't be getting married, you've done that already. What's up?"

Nate and CD looked at each other, and CD took a big breath. "Nate and I are going to have a baby. I'm pregnant!" CD said, and she and Nate grinned.

Kate smiled, too, and said, "Wow! That's fantastic, guys, when? How far along are you?"

"I'm 3 months. I'm due in July," CD replied.

Kate gave CD and Nate her congratulations and the three talked about the details of working and maternity leave. Eventually Nate and CD left Cap's office and walked over to Jinny and Magda, who were researching a suspect. CD said, "We wanted you guys to know that we're going to have a baby."

"Oh, wow, that's wonderful! I'm so happy for you!" Jinny said.

"When are you due?" Magda asked CD.

"July," CD replied.

"I'm surprised you two could wait so long to tell us! Especially you, Nate." Jinny said with a grin.

Nat replied, "Oh, it was tough." He laughed.

"Listen, if you need any advice or have any questions, I'd be happy to help you out," Magda said.

"Thanks, Mag." CD answered.

CD and Nate were handed their assignment and headed out the division door and approached the elevator, just as Raina was stepping off of it. "Hey," she said to them.

"Hey, Raina, do yo have a minute?" Nate said.

"Yeah, what's up?" Raina replied.

"Well, Nate and I are, um, we're pregnant!" CD exclaimed, but then tried to keep her voice down, because she didn't want to alert everybody.

Raina's face broke into a huge smile and said, "Oh, that's wonderful! How amazing! I'm so happy for you guys!"

CD said, "Thanks. We really have to get to our crime scene, but we wanted to let you know before Magda got to you."

"Thanks for telling me. See you later, Mommy and Daddy!" she said with a laugh, and waved as she walked away.

Now a few more weeks later, it was the morning of February 14th. The darn alarm clock went off in CD and Nate's bedroom, and CD reached over to her nightstand to smack it. She groaned, and rolled over towards Nate. She rubbed his arm and said, "Nate, sweetie, we have to get up."

Nate opened his eyes and rolled over to face CD. He kissed her and said, "Good morning, Valentine."

CD smiled and said, "Happy Valentine's Day."

Nate gripped her shoulders and kissed her again and said, "And happy first anniversary, Love."

CD smiled again, and got out of bed. Nate loved to see her body change from week to week. Her tummy was now decidedly round, and she was having trouble fitting into most of her clothes. Nate thought she looked beautiful. CD walked into the bathroom, took her pajamas off, and got into the shower. After she was done, she dressed, did her hair and makeup, and went downstairs to the kitchen. Nate had some french toast ready for her. CD entered the kitchen, and said, "Aw, you are too sweet, honey!"

"Hey, you haven't seen anything yet!" Nate replied. CD sat down at the counter and Nate placed her plate in front of her. They ate, Nate showered and dressed, and they left for work.

Once Nate and CD arrived at the division, they got their assignment and visited the crime scene. When they returned to the office to do some checks, it was about 10:30. A few minutes later, a young delivery man carrying a vase of pink roses and gardenias walked in. Raina looked up from her desk, and the man called, "CD Basso? Delivery for CD Basso."

CD smirked at Nate and whispered, "You're terrible!" She then looked up and said, "I'm CD Basso."

The man walked over to her and placed the flowers on her desk. "These are for you," he said and left.

"Thanks," she said, and then looked back at Nate. Raina was giggling by now. Nate had a huge grin on his face and leaned back in his chair. "I really do love them, Nate. They're gorgeous. Aren't they.....oh my god, these were the flowers from our wedding!" Nate just lifted his eyebrows and continued to smile. "Love you," CD mouthed to Nate.

"Yeah, yeah, bet you say that to all your partners-turned-husband!" he replied with a laugh. CD smiled back and rolled her eyes.

Jinny and Magda walked into the division, and Magda spotted the flower arrangement. "Oh, how beautiful!" Magda said and sat down at her desk.

Jinny walked over to them and smiled. "So, CD, who's your secret admirer?" Jinny joked and then walked behind Nate and pinched his shoulder. "Whoa, Nate, you've got yourself some competition there, buddy!". Jinny laughed and walked over to the file cabinet. Nate and CD chuckled, shook their heads, and got back to work.

Thanks! Sorry this took me so long, guys. Here's the rest of the Valentine's Day part. I was planning on posting it on Valentine's Day, but here it is anyway.

CD and Nate had lunch at "their" picnic table at Alamo Square. They came to that spot often, and fondly remembered their first words of love that they spoke to each other there. It had been about 15 months now since that day, and if it was possible, they were more in love now then they they were then. They continued to work their case that afternoon, and wrapped up for the day around 5:30.

Nate and CD went home after work and changed their clothes. Then they got back into the car and drove off. Nate pulled up the car on Polk and parked. He and CD got out and walked into the little Italian restaurant and stood in line. When they got to the front, Nate said to the hostess, "Reservation for 2 at 6:30, under the name "Basso." The hostess found it and led them to their table.

They ordered their meal and just savored the evening out together. CD looked at her swelling tummy, and then looked across the table at Nate. She loved this man, and loved that they were having this baby together. She had never known anyone like Nate before. He was so caring, gentle, thoughtful, and loving, and she knew that there was nothing that he wouldn't do for her. CD could scarecely believe that a whole year had flown by since their wedding day. To her, it had been like a week.

Nate caught CD's gaze and smiled. They looked into each other's eyes and CD reached for Nate's hand. He stared at his beloved CD, whom he had loved since he first laid eyes on her, 3 and half years before. He thought about all the things he loved about her, that she was beautiful, loving caring, genuine, and giving. There were times when he looked at her and he pinched himself, reassuring himself that it wasn't all a dream. CD whispered to him, "I love you more than anything on earth, Nate."

Nate studied her blue pools and replied, "And I love you above all else, CD."

After dinner, they returned home. CD tired more easily these days, because of the pregnancy. They went upstairs to their bedroom, and CD walked into the bathroom and turned on the jacuzzi's warm water. She poured in some scented bubble bath, and slipped of her clothes. She pulled on her satin robe and appeared in the doorway. Nate looked up at her, as he undressed. She said, "Would you like to join me? The water's terrific."

Nate grinned. "Are you kidding me? I wouldn't miss it for the world."

CD let the robe fall from her shoulders and climbed into the tub. Nate followed behind her. After relaxing a while, CD moved closer to Nate and stroked his face. Then she brushed her lips against his and kissed them. Nate returned the kiss, and sent his hands to explore familiar territory. "Happy anniversary and Valentine's Day, darling," he whispered.

"Happy anniversary and Valentine's Day, my love," CD returned. She ran her fingers up and down his back as he kissed her neck and chest. Her lips found his neck and began to travel down. With that, Nate scooped her up and carried her out of the tub. They made a game out of drying each other off, and then made a leap for the bed.

Later that week, CD was in the ladies' locker room at the division, washing her hands. She took a tube of moisturizing cream and smeared some across her belly. Just then, Magda stepped out of a stall and walked to the sink to wash her hands. She looked at CD and smiled. "Trying to prevent stretch marks, huh?" she asked.

CD nodded and said, "Yeah. I don't know if it will work or not, but it's worth a shot."

"Well, I'm sure it will help. They do fade a little after time, though."

CD retied the drawstring of her pants and said, "I have GOT to get some maternity clothes, for work and home. I only have 1 pair of pants left that still fits!"

"I know a really great maternity shop on Hyde. I could go with you, if you want."

"Oh, that would be great. I could really use some help. Are you busy Saturday?"

"Sure, that's fine. I have to take Ben to soccer practice in the morning, so can I meet you there at 1?"

"Perfect," CD replied and smiled. "Thanks, Mag."

"No problem."

CD opened the door and they returned to work.

Saturday morning, Nate and CD slept in and then got up to do some chores. They spent the rest of the morning cleaning the house, and then went out to grab some lunch before CD left for clothes shopping. CD said to Nate, "So, what are you going to do with yourself while I'm gone?"

"Ummm...Mow the lawn?" Nate replied, more asking than telling.

CD smirked and kissed him. "You're a good guy, you know that?"

Nate lifted his eyebrows. "So I've been told," he smirked back. CD chuckled, kissed him again, and left.

CD found the shop on Hyde and entered the store. Magda was already there, and Jinny was there as well. CD was pleased to see Jinny, but surprised. "Hey, Magda, hey, Jin, you're here!" CD said.

Jinny said, "Yeah, I heard that you guys were coming here, and I've never been to one of these places, so I thought I'd tag along!"

"Sure. So, where do we start?" CD kind of wondered about why Jinny was really there. She had never pictured her wanting kids, but she figured that the thought was on her mind as her biological clock loudly ticked. Still, CD kept these thoughts to herself.

The three women spent close to an hour in the store, and CD bought clothes that would fit her through her second trimester. $400 later, the inspectors stopped in at a cafe for coffee and a chat. CD had decaf, of course, so as to not let the baby have caffeine. She was very careful, not wanting anything that might negatively affect her baby. CD, Jinny, and Magda had a good time together, but before long, they went their separate ways again. CD stopped off at the grocery store to pick up some things for dinner, and returned home. She made some cookies, and then some banana bread and started some chicken breasts to bake.

Nate came in from the garage and stopped. He inhaled deeply. "Ahhh...mmm....what is that positively intoxicating smell?" He walked into the kitchen and nuzzled CD's neck. "Are you cooking?" he said, surprised.

CD rolled her eyes, smiled, and said, "Yes, I'm cooking! I did cook for you even before we got together, you know. Besides, now that I'm pregnant, I have all these maternal instincts."

"Yeah, sure," he grinned. Nate rubbed her belly and kissed and nibbled on her ear. CD turned to face him and ran her fingers through his hair. Nate's lips traveled from her ear, across her cheek, and found her lips. Their mouths melded together, and their tongues found each other.

After half a minute they broke, and CD breathed, "Mmmm. Isn't that lovely."

"Yes, you are," Nate added. They smiled at each other and Nate rubbed CD's belly again. "So, how's our little one today?" Nate asked.

"Doing just fine. And I---oh my god!" CD exclaimed, her eyes wide.

"What?!" Nate asked, worried.

"I just felt the baby kick!" CD said, practically laughing with joy.

"Oh, wow! You felt it kick?! That's amazing!" Nate exclaimed, and lifted up CD's shirt. He placed his hands on her bare tummy. "I hope it happens again soon!"

Just then, he felt a faint flutter under CD's skin. Nate and CD stared at each other, overcome with joy. "There you go, Daddy!" CD said with a grin. Nate flashed a wide smile, placed his arms around CD's middle, picked her up, and spun her around. CD laughed, and they kissed again. "I'm glad that you're my baby's daddy," CD said against Nate's lips.

Nate held her tight against his own body and whispered, "Me, too. And I'm glad that you're my baby's mommy."

Awww, thanks so much! You flatter me. :) Well, this is kind of short and disjointed, but here's some more.

The next Monday, CD had another obstetrician appointment. This was the day that they would find out the sex of the baby. She and Nate were in the doctor's office, and the doctor was getting the sonogram ready again. Nate was smiling and holding CD's hand. He always looked forward to seeing their baby on the monitor, and watch it develop. It was such a miracle. "OK, now are you both sure that you want to know the baby's sex?" the doctor asked.

Nate and CD looked at each other, and Nate said, "Yes. My wife and I would like to know."

"Alright, then...let's see....congratulations, Mom and Dad, it looks like you are expecting a girl!"

Nate and CD grinned widely, and hugged. "A girl! A girl! We're having a girl!" Nate exclaimed.

"Oh, honey, our baby is a girl! I'm going to have a little girl---a daughter of my own," CD replied, just as excited as Nate. They looked at the screen again, and watched their precious little one's body. They could see its little head, arms, and legs. Then the baby lifted its thumb to its mouth and appeared to suck on it. With that, CD just thought her heart would melt. Besides being with Nate, she had never felt such happiness. Nate watched his wife's reaction, and he felt his heart melt as well. He couldn't resist her lips, and softly kissed them.

CD was now 6 months pregnant, and it was obvious to everyone that she was. CD and Nate had all the ultrasound photos framed and arranged in their living room. They loved that baby so much. CD would play classical music at home to stimulate the baby intellectually, and she and Nate both loved talking to her. Nate and CD also decided to decorate the nursery. They painted the bedroom next to theirs a sunny, cheery yellow, and put a cute border at the top of puppies and kittens.

In May, CD and Nate started lamaze classes. CD loved how sweet and gentle Nate was when he held her and coached her transitional breathing. Nate loved doing it, as well. This was all part of his dream, that had come true. CD realized again, for probably the thousandth time, how much Nate loved her.

awwww, that was the sweetest thing ever!!!!! I think I might have even shed a tear...

CD and Nate returned home early one evening from a lamaze class. Nate unlocked the door, and CD said, "Let's get dinner started. I'm starving, and I have such a craving for fritos!"

Nate smiled and said, "Would you like a pickle with that?"

"Very funny!" They walked inside, and CD set her bag on the console table.

Suddenly, Kate, Jinny, Magda, and Raina jumped from the next room and yelled, "Surprise!"

CD started laughing, and Nate just proudly grinned. CD exlaimed, "Wow, what's this? What are you guys doing here?"

"It's your baby shower, silly!" Raina replied, with a huge smile on her face.

CD laughed and looked at Nate. "Do you have anything to do with this?"

"Me? ME? Nah....unless, of course, you count me as the father and all...." he replied with a smirk.

CD chuckled and elbowed him in the side. "Shut up...you live to torture."

Jinny had brought pizza with her for dinner, and the six of them sat down to eat. CD quickly inhaled three pieces before noticing the conversation. Then, Raina said, "I know that everybody hates baby shower games, but let's play one, just for fun. You each get a sheet of paper with Nate and CD's real names on it, Nathan and Candace. Everybody following me? Good. Now, write down as many baby names that you can think of that you can spell using the letters in their names. Got it?"

Jinny groaned and Kate chuckled at Raina. CD and Nate just exchanged glances. "We've got it," Nate said.

They played the gamed, and Jinny won. Then CD opened her gifts. Kate gave her a car seat carrier, Magda and Jinny went in on a rocking chair for the nursery together, and Raina gave her a couple of baby outfits. After the gifts, they had the cake that Kate had brought, and the guests went home. CD and Nate cleaned up a little. CD walked over to Nate, came up behind him, and wrapped her arms around him. "I loved this evening, Nate. Thanks for organizing it."

Nate turned around and held her. "Well, actually, Raina did most of it."

"Whatever," CD murmured with a sweet smile, and kissed him.

The following Monday, CD began desk duty. She was now in her eighth month of pregnancy, and besides it being dangerous for her to be out on the streets, it was difficult for her to get around anymore. She now looked like she had a basketball under her shirt, which definately impaired her flexibility and mobility. Nate was assigned to work with Raina when he needed a partner physically, but he and CD still did the brainstorming and office work together. Nate wasn't thrilled about having to work with Raina more than usual, but he was more than willing and happy to do anything it took for CD's and the baby's health. CD, too, was disappointed at the prospect of not doing anymore field work for several months, but she was also secretly relieved. She felt so tired at times, that she was glad to stay put and stay sitting down. Plus, it was easier to sneak in a mini-nap at her desk than it was while chasing down a suspect.

In June, Nate and CD finished buying everything that they would need for the baby. They spent a fortune buying a bassinet, crib, bouncy chair, swing, high chair, changing table, diapers, wipes, rash cream, clothes, pacifiers, breast pump, bottles, bibs, and bedding. Nate couldn't allow himself to add the total in his head, because he knew he would probably have a heart attack. He was amazed that such a little person could need so much stuff. They set everything up in the nursery, and waited. They would put the bassinet in their bedroom when the baby would come, and she would sleep there for the first month or two. Nate and CD could hardly wait for their little girl to come. Every night, when they would get into bed, Nate would give CD a foot massage. Then he would caress her belly and talk to the baby. CD loved it. She saw how Nate and her first husband, Paul, were as if they were from different planets. She reminded him daily how much she loved him, as he reminded her. They saw their baby as a symbol of the love that they shared, and couldn't wait to meet her.

As CD began her ninth month, she cut back her work hours to half days. She and Nate would go to work together in the morning, and then they would go home to have lunch. CD would stay, and Nate would go back for the afternoon. CD had to let her body rest. The time was getting close for the baby to be born.

CD was two days away from her due date. She went to take a shower before bed. When she stepped out of the shower to dry off, she noticed a clear liquid was streaming down her legs. "Nate! Nate! Get in here! My water broke!" she yelled.

Nate immediately came running into the bathroom. "CD! Are you alright? Is this normal?" he said, in a panic.

"Yeah, sure, it's fine, but we have to get to the hospital. It means I'll start to go into labor soon!" she answered.

Nate helped her get dressed, and grabbed her duffel bag. He then helped her out to the car, and handed her a towel to absorb the amniotic fluid. Thinking that he was glad to be a cop, he put on the lights and siren and sped to the hospital.

CD got checked in, and she was placed in a birthing room. The contractions hadn't started yet, but would soon. As a nurse came to prepare CD for delivery, the unit secretary came in and said to Nate, "Mr. Basso, I'll need you to come with me to fill out some forms."

"Uh, sure. CD, will you be OK for a couple of minutes?" Nate replied.

"Yeah, go. I'll be fine," she answered, but then added, "But don't be too long."

Nate smiled and said, "Don't worry. I'll be right back." Nate returned in just a few minutes, and sat beside CD. 'She looks so beautiful,' he thought as he watched her lie in the hospital bed.

CD looked up at Nate, took his hand, and smiled. Their hands bonded together, and Nate's white gold wedding band shone next to CD's matching one. CD said to him, "I'm so glad you're here with me."

"I wouldn't have it any other way." Nate leaned over and gently kissed her.

A few hours ticked by, and Nate tried to keep CD entertained. Then the contractions started about 2 in the morning. "Hold my hand, sweetie. Hold my hand and squeeze it if you need to," Nate told CD. He coached her with the lamaze breathing, which helped a little. When a contraction would come, CD did squeeze Nate's hand, hard. Nate bit his lip at the pain of it, but kept from showing it. He knew that CD was in far worse pain, and he hated to see her like that. He was amazed at how strong she was. Nate put on some soothing music, which seemed to calm CD a little.

During a difficult contraction, Nate began to guide her mentally through Hawaii. "Sweetheart," Nate said, "Imagine lying on the beach in Waukiki...the soft, smooth sand between your toes...the sparkling, turquoise water lapping at your feet...it's 75 degrees, and the sun is shining...there's a fresh, cool, salty breeze that blows through your hair...I bring you one of those spiked iced fruit drinks with the little umbrella, and I give you a shoulder rub...." Nate continued on, tying to take CD's mind off the labor.

Finally, about 7:45 that morning, CD crowned. "OK, Mrs. Basso, I can see the baby's head. We're moving you into delivery," the technician said. "Mr. Basso, you'll have to wash and put on scrubs for delivery."

"OK," Nate replied and quickly followed orders, while the team moved CD from the bed to the gurney. He grabbed CD's hand and they went to delivery. "This is it, honey!" he said with a smile.

"Let's do this! I'm ready to get this baby out!" CD exclaimed, between breaths.

CD was ready to deliver. Nate was at her side, holding her hand. He'd gotten used to the intense squeezing pressure that CD placed on his hand, and he tried to tune out her screams. He hated to see her going through this. He just kept coaching her breathing and saying soothing things.

"One more push, Mrs. Basso, and we'll have the baby!" the doctor told CD.

"Easy for you to say!" CD yelled at her. She pushed.

"Here she comes, darling, here she comes!" Nate cried with a huge smile.

The doctor announced, "Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Basso, you have a beautiful baby girl!"

Nate and CD, overcome with joy, looked at each other an laughed and cried. "You did it, love!" Nate exclaimed.

"No, Nate, WE did it!" CD replied, with a huge smile on her face.

"Mr. Basso, would you like to cut the cord?" the doctor asked.

"I'd love to!" Nate answered, and proudly cut the cord. He gazed at his baby. "She's beautiful, sweetheart!" Nate called to CD.

"Ooooh! I want to see her!" CD replied.

The nurse wiped the baby off a little bit, and suctioned out the mucous in her mouth, so that she could breathe. She was wrapped in a pink blanket, and placed in Nate's arms. "Here you go, Daddy!" the nurse said.

Nate held his and CD's baby, and moved back to CD's head. They gazed at their precious, tiny baby. Nate could hardly contain himself. Tears of joy were streaming down both of their faces. Here he was, holding his child, that CD had just given him. His beloved, precious CD. He placed the baby in CD's arms and tore himself away. CD cradled her to her chest, and giggled. Nate and CD both felt this tremendous bond between them, and Nate, one arm around CD, his other arm around their baby, said, "I love you so much."

"I love you, too, honey," CD replied, and they kissed.

"What's her name?" the doctor asked.

Nate and CD looked at each other, and Nate nodded to CD. "Analise Joy Basso," CD said, then looked at Nate and smiled. He grinned back, and kissed little Analise. Then CD kissed her. "Welcome to the world, Analise," CD cooed.

"We love you, Analise," Nate murmured.

They counted her ten little fingers and ten little toes. She was perfect. She had green eyes just like her daddy, and wisps of blonde hair, just like her mommy. "She has your eyes, Nate," CD said.

"And she acts like you," Nate said with a twinkle in his eye. Analise wasn't crying, but acted all cool as she looked at her surroundings, and stared at her mommy and daddy. She seemed to recognize her parents' voices. Nate and CD looked at their baby adoringly, and kissed again.

Two days later, Nate brought CD and Analise home. CD carried her inside, cradled her in her arms, and Nate carried the bags inside. "Welcome home, my little one," CD said softly.

Nate looked at his wife and baby daughter and smiled. He loved them so much. There was his true love, CD, who had just given life to their baby. A gift so wonderful, that tears sprang to his eyes. CD turned to look at him and smiled that smile that she only directed at him, and sent him reeling. They went into their bedroom and CD sat down on the bed, her back supported by pillows. She unbuttoned her shirt while holding Analise, and said to Nate, "Let's give this nursing at home thing a try." Nate sat down next to her and helped her. CD tried to remember everything that the nursing coach taught her, and it worked. When Analise fell asleep in CD's arms, CD said, "She's asleep. Let's try to put her in the bassinett."

Nate nodded, and he got up and walked around the bed to CD. She stood up, and gently lowered Analise into the cradle. Nate tucked the quilt around her. Analise snuggled into the corner. Her tiny, plump body was perfect. Nate slipped his pinky finger into her hand and she gripped it. CD stroked her little, fuzzy head. Then Nate placed his arm around CD, and the two of them stood admiring their baby. CD looked at him and smiled. She wrapped her arm around him and placed her head on his shoulder. They felt so happy.

Finally, CD and Nate tore themselves away from watching the baby sleep. Both still exhausted from labor and the hospital stay, they crawled into their bed. Nate cradled CD in his arms, and they fell asleep.

Nate took the next several days off from work to help CD with the baby. They loved taking care of Analise. They did the feedings, naps, diaper changes, and playing together. Nate made sure thaat CD got enough rest, and he cooked all the meals and did all the laundry. The others from the division stopped by to see the baby and visit CD and Nate. They each brought a little gift for Analise, and Kate and Magda each brought a ready-made supper for them.

Awww thanks:D :D It's really nice that at least SOMEONE remembers today's my birthday. My father came home tonight a little drunk and when my sister told me happy birthday, he was like Your birthday's TODAY? Really??? Happy birtday then honey.... So,um....how old are you? What a great daddy i have :rolleyes2 He doesn't even know which grade i'm in:mad:

Before she knew it, CD's 3-month maternity leave was up. Poor Nate had endured working with Raina for about 5 months now, and he was so ready to work with his partner again. CD and Nate found out that one of their neighbors, who was a full-time mom, wanted to take in a child for day care. They checked her out, and it looked to be the perfect situation for their darling Analise.

The morning of CD's first day back, she and Nate got up, showered, and dressed. "If feels SO good to put my good clothes back on, Nate," CD said.

"And you look so fantastic in them, too," Nate replied and came up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her slender-again waist and kissed her neck.

CD giggled and kissed him. "Well, I've been working out, you know. Can't go back to work fat!" she said and laughed.

"I can tell. But you are always beautiful to me."

"Oh, stop...." CD replied, and grinned. She acted like she was embarassed by compliments, but she really loved it when Nate told her those things. CD went and woke up Analise. She fed her and packed her diaper bag and placed a couple of bottles of expressed breast milk in it for the day. Then she bathed and dressed Analise, before eating her own breakfast, and then the small family left.

CD's first day back at work went fine, but both she and Nate constantly thought about the baby. At lunch, they ran back home to see her.

Late that night, Nate and CD laid a sleeping Analise down in her her crib in her bedroom. They stood there in the dark, watching her her, their arms wrapped around each other's waists. Nate turned so that his chest was up against CD's, and gripped her back. CD laid her head on his shoulder, and clasped her hands together on his back. Nate inhaled her sweet scent and kissed her hair. They felt at peace with the world, and nothing but unconditional love for each other. They gazed at their baby. They each saw the other in Analise, and thought what a beautiful baby they had made together. CD looked up at Nate, and they smiled seductively at each other. Their lips came closer, and they closed their eyes. Their lips met, and kissed deeply and passionately. CD's mouth began to move to Nate's jaw and neck, and Nate moaned. "You know, I am SO TIRED," he said with a devilish grin, and looked at her expectantly.

CD smiled and said, "What a coincidence, so am I!" They kissed some more, while moving across the hall into their bedroom. CD began to unbutton Nate's shirt, while he pulled at her turtleneck. As they disappeared into their bedroom, the door closing behind them, they reflected on their relationship, and how far they had come. They both knew that their love was a genuine love, shared only by mates of the soul, and would endure forever.

EPILOGUE
Three years after the birth of Analise Joy, Candace and Nathan Basso were delighted to have another baby, perfect little boy named Brennan Nathan. Three years after that, CD gave birth to one more baby, a girl named Jasmine Danae. They all lived happily ever after.

So how was that? I can't tell you all how much I loved writing this fic. It was such a joy, and I'm so thankful that it is appreciated! I feel kind of sad, that it's ending, but I will definately keep writing about my two favorite TV characters in the whole world!!! :D So just watch for new fics.
