Hello, everybody! Here's my first shot at a fanfic. I've always wondered what it was like when CD and Nate first met, because the show just skipped over it. This is short, but cute.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inspector CD DeLorenzo was finishing up at a crime scene on morning, all by herself. She had been working alone for the past few weeks, since her partner Angela had left to have a baby. Although CD could handle the job OK on her own, she felt lonely, stressed out, and anxious. It was difficult conducting an investigation without a partner to consult with, and be protected by. It was always riskier for a cop to go alone, especially a woman, and in San Francisco. CD went back to the Felony Division and filled her captain, Kate McCafferty, in on the case. When she finished talking about it, CD said, "Cap? Any progress yet on a new partner for me?"
"Actually, yes. It's been a little challenging to find someone who I think would be perfect for you, but I think I found our guy."
"Oh, that's great. Do you know how long it'll be?"
"Well, he's being transferred from Vice, so it shouldn't be too long. Maybe even tomorrow. His name is Nate Basso, and from what I hear, he's really good. Passed the inspector's test 5 years ago, and has led and solved some major investigations."
"Sounds like a winner. Can't wait to meet him." CD replied with a smile.
CD went back to work the next morning, dressed in a long black suit and a baby blue turtleneck sweater. She sat down at her desk, and then looked up when she saw Kate walking in the door. With her was a man, who CD assumed was this new guy, Nate Basso. Her eyes traveled up and down his lean, muscular frame. 'Pretty cute,' CD thought, 'please, please let him be my partner. Wouldn't that be fun!' Kate was speaking quietly to him, and then led him over to CD. CD stood up. 'Oh, my gosh, he's tall, too. What, about 6'2"? I could wear heels and still not be taller than him!' CD thought to herself.
"CD, I'd like you to meet Inspector Nate Basso. I told you about him yesterday."
"Ah, yes." CD replied and shook his hand.
Kate said, "Nate, and this is Inspector Candace DeLorenzo, but she likes to be called CD."
Nate looked at CD and smiled contentedly. "Nice to meet you, CD. I've heard a lot about you from Captain McCafferty."
"I hope that you don't judge me too harshly then," CD replied, and laughed.
Nate couldn't help but keep his eyes on this woman, He was very excited that she was his new partner. He had heard that she was a great cop, but he didn't know that she was so beautiful, too. 'She has the most beautiful eyes and smile I have ever seen', he thought.
"CD, would you mind showing Nate around?" Kate asked.
"Sure, no problem," CD said and smiled at Nate.
"So, why do you like to be called CD?" Nate asked.
Well, Candace isn't a very good name. Not for a cop, anyway. Too girly-girl."
"Oh, I think it's a nice name," he replied.
CD showed him around the division, and then took him back to his new desk. It was facing CD's, and Nate began to take his stuff out of a box and arrange it. "So....what does you wife think of the new job?" CD asked, slyly. A hesitant smirk crossed her face.
Nate looked back at her with a surprised look and answered, "Oh, I'm not married. But I like the new position, though. Good change."
CD smiled to herself and thought, 'There's another check on my list.'
"You married?" Nate cautiously asked.
"Well, not really. I was, but my husband and I separated a few months ago, and he filed for divorce. Should be final soon, since we don't have kids or anything."
"Sorry to hear that. Not fun, huh?" he said, even though he was thankful on the inside.
"No, it's not. I guess one woman isn't enough for some guys." she said, softly, and stared at the floor.
Nate felt a little tug at his heart when he realized why her husband had left her. He hated it when guys did that crap to women. "Well, not all guys," he said.
CD glanced at him, surprised, and then went back to what she was working on. Kate came to the doorway of her office and called to them. "CD and Nate, could I see you for a minute?"
"Sure," CD said and got up. Nate looked at CD and followed her into the office.
Kate said, "OK, I have an assignment for you. An elderly couple found shot to death in their home. Don't know if it was a beak-in, or what. I need you two to go check it out. Nothing like working together to get to know someone."
"We're on it." Nate said, and they grabbed their coats, and walked towards the elevators.
CD looked at Nate and thought to herself, 'So far, so good. Looks like this is going to work out. And I can get along with his personality.'
As they stepped into the elevator, Nate glanced at CD and felt a lift in his step. 'Yeah, this is nice,' he thought. He couldn't wait to get to know this woman better---he had a special feeling about her. He felt an instant bond to her, something he'd never had with anyone before. 'Let's just see where this road leads, Candace,' he thought to himself, and began to daydream.........
The End
(OK, everybody knows what happened after this. And just to make everyone feel better about the premiere, CD and Nate eventually got married and lived happily ever after!)
