This episode is one of my favorites for many reasons, but I just now realized how prescient it was. A good decade before the Reality TV boom, Bubba Higgins made his own "Real World"!

One of the biggest gripes of ex-reality show contestants, after all, is that "the director made me look bad in editing." I can't think of anyone made to look worse by editing than Vinton, Naomi, and Thelma Harper.

Also noteworthy is the title of the episode, "The Really Loud Family" - a reference to PBS's early 70's "An American Family" documentary featuring a clan by the name of, you guessed it, Loud! This was a groundbreaking series at the time and is frequently credited with laying the groundwork for future reality tv, but sadly, Mama's Family gets no credit.

Too bad "Thelma" didn't make reference to Bubba's failed attempts at reality television when she made her speech on the TV Land awards. She would know about it first hand!

YES!

OMG, this is one o' my FAv'rite episodes!! :D

It is TOO too funny...and it's hard to decide who's segment is the funniest! I tend to think that each gets a li'l funnier than the previous one, though they're all great!

And astro, thank ya so much for givin' a li'l history lesson on the title of the episode---as you know, I'm in the dark o' some o' those thangs! lol :p  (I had in fact not known of "An American Family" featurin' the Louds before...thanks!).

Other fav'rite moments of the episode:

Vint: "Don't you like orphans?"

Mama: "Of course I like orphans, who the hell doesn't?!"

-----

Mama: "Lord, well it better not be one o' them trashy music videos with a bunch o' misfits in spandex gyratin' in the fog!"

:rotflmao:

OMG, those moments always get me!

I also love Naomi's classic "Shoulder Shimmy" when Mama offers her the pie...

Mama: "Naomi, would you like to try a delicious piece of my pecan pie?"

Naomi: "Why thank you, Ms. Harper...I would be most grateful! *shoulder shimmy* "

:D

Technically, though, don't ya mean just "Naomi and Thelma Harper"? ;)

Poor Naomi "did herself in", but not only did Mama hang herself---Vint 'n Iola also unknowin'ly gave her two more nooses! lol :p

I stand corrected! You're right. I haven't seen the episode in quite awhile, hence my memory lapse. Thanks!

OMG, this is probably my favorite episode of this show. It is hilarious!!! But, Bubba techincally didn't "edit" the video, he claims there was a short in the camera. But, the result was hysterical, even my mom who usually doesn't get such a kick out of what I find funny, roared at this one!

Incidently, there's an episode of Kate & Allie from early 1984 that had this exact same title and premise. Emma made a home video of the family for school, and it was also pretty funny. That's something this show seemed to do alot..."borrow" episode titles from other series...

MF: "The Really Loud Family" K&A: "The Really Loud Family"
MF: "Mama Goes Hawaiian, 1 & 2" Here's Lucy: "Lucy Goes Hawaiian, 1 & 2"

I'm pretty sure there's more although I haven't looked at the episode guide recently...

Not that he just "claimed" there was a short in the camera though, there actually was.

He couldn't have known what they were gonna say when he filmed 'em, and he was genuinely annoyed when he first discovered the short was there---which also explains his genuine laughter and surprise when the family viewed the results on TV. You could also tell he was flattered when he said the professor said his video was the most dynamic and revealing, and not acting like he was tryin' to hide anything.

If you think otherwise, it's just not as funny! lol :p

Great episode!! One of my favorites too. It was really funny when Mama actually started proving what the revised "movie" said about her. When she watches she says something like, "great, not only am I a lush, but I am an abusive mother." Then she hits Vinton and says "Give me my beer!" haha
Her lines were also really funny...when talking about Christmas family gatherings: "Before the mood turns ugly..." I use that quote alot to describe my family.

Very funny episode!!

I know there was a short in the camera. Just because I said he claimed there was doesn't mean it wasn't true...I really don't get any extra kick out of it whichever way I look at the camera situation. Even if Bubba intentionally fimed only certain quotes of what they said to make the result, it still would be ROTF funny...

Sorry if I sounded that way back...

It's just that sometimes I feel you take my comments on here a little too seriously or something, so I feel I have to defend myself or something...but, from now on it's all cool...;)

Well, Bubba's foray in reality TV was predated by three other reality shows, Queen for a Day, Real People, and The People's Court.

Actually, this is my least favorite episode. Totally dumb.

It is predictable, ridiculous, and tedious.

that's one of the funniest episodes ever!

remember Iola's quoting of Mama "Why should I clean them up they'll just get dirty again?" the camera short made it sould like Mama was talking about her daughters! (she was really talking about their dolls)

Edited versions:

Naomi: Everynight, before I went to sleep, Marlon would sneak into my room. He'd sleep in my bed all night long. I'd rub his belly and he'd lick my face.

Vint: Seems like everytime daddy went outta town...Mama fell off the wagon...She was completely plastered what a mess. That's when she started having men in...'course she made us kids swear not to tell daddy.

Iola: I'll never forget the shock when I went to Thelma's daughter's bedroom...those poor things were totally neglected...they were dirty, they're clothes were in rags. I asked Thelma how she could stand to see them that way and she said..."Why should I clean them up? They'll just get dirty again".

Thelma: When I think about family, my kids and all their kids...it just turns my stomach! Husbands beatin' their wives. Wives cheatin' on their husbands. Kids stealing and running away and you know were I place all the blame?...right with this old lady. I guess some people would say that I'm a failure as a mother...and I'd have to agree with them.

I am laughing my butt off all over again as I write this.
