View Full Version : Least favorite Christmas songs
I'll start with my "bottom five."
5. Bing Crosby and David Bowie - Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth
I know a lot of people who love this, but I just don't get it. Bing seems uninterested at best, and Bowie seems out-of-place.
4. Jon Bon Jovi - Please Come Home For Christmas
If there's anyone who shouldn't be covering a Charles Brown classic and frolicking with Cindy Crawford c. 1992 in the video, it shoud not be Jon Bon Jovi.
It should be me.
3. The Twelve Days Of Christmas (traditional)
Okay, we get the point - save for the "five golden rings," your true love doesn't know how to properly do his or her Christmas shopping. Can we move on and listen to "Father Christmas" by the Kinks" now, or do we have to keep singing this awful, overrated ditty? Christ, this thing is longer than the album version of "In A Gadda Da Vida."
2. The Chipmunks - The Chipmunk Song
Ross Bagdasarian triple-tracks his voice and records himself at half-speed and he's considered a genius. Meantime, I've written screenplays and songs and Hollywood hasn't come knocking yet.
Maybe if I write about a grown man who raises three chipmunks as his own sons...
1. Elmo & Patsy - Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
Okay, it's been twenty-four years. Who the hell still finds this funny? All this song makes me want to do is make the egg nog a bit more "spiky."

I can't stand that John Lennon song...with the kids singing. The kids ruined the song. They don't sing. They screech.
Hollow 12-21-2003, 10:31 PM Jingle bell rock. i hate this song so much... its annoying and stupid. in fact when i was in kindergarten we sang christmas carols for a christmas program and when that song came on i stood there doing nothing.
Hey santa, again its annoying and stupid.
Grandma got ran over by a reindeer. grandma died, lets write a "comedy" song about it!
And every xmas song covered by an oldies group. we always have to listen to them when we decorate the xmas tree and they sound terrible.

Actually, the kids are singing great. That's the Harlem Children's Choir.
It's Yoko who's doing the screeching.:lol: I've tried to mix her vocals out of both mixes of the song to no avail. I love the song already, but it would be ten times better with her vocals taken out.

That's a horrible song. Nothing is funny about your grandma dying.

Steve M. 12-23-2003, 01:00 PM "I Believe In Father Christmas" by Greg Lake (two versions, one with a full orchestral backing - that's taking a bad song and making it worse!)
"Santa Baby" by anyone - It's just a horrible, horrible song!
"Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" by Elmo and Patsy - No, your grandmother dying isn't funny!
"I'm Gettin' Nothin' For Christmas" by anyone - The kid's been bad all year, but deflects blame to someone else - "Somebody snitched on me." Oh, so if no one had snitched on him/her, he/she would have gotten away with being bad and made out like a bandit on Christmas morning?!? And some of the "sins" - splling something on a rug, tearing your pants while climbing a tree - are accidents that could happen to anyone. Also, the kid waits until January to start being good, which means he/she will still be naughty through New Year's??
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid - There's no song form, there's no verse structure, pre-punk British rockers aren't represented (except. . .Phil Collins?) by the all-star chorus, Simon Le Bon can't sing, and the record led to "We Are The World" and then to the patronizing Live Aid concerts that made everyone feel good but accomplished nothing. Feed the world? Yeah, right. Bono's solo is the only redeeming value of this record, and he at least puts his money where his big mouth is! :)
DianeChambers87 12-23-2003, 01:17 PM I love Santa Baby, and The Christmas song, and Jingle Bell Rock.
One song I can't stand is: The little drummer boy.

ooooh me too. I feel like smashing something when I hear it.
Tuesday Weld 12-23-2003, 01:43 PM I don't like "Have yourself a Merry little Christmas",there's something quite sarcastic-sounding about it.
"Grandma got run over by a reindeer" - Stupid and not at all funny.
There's probably more,which I'll post,when I think of them.

All that song does is make my dogs tilt their heads like they're wondering where the barking is coming from!
I'm in total agreement with all of you about "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer". They need to run the CD over with a reindeer!
Adding to my list: Hey Santa
The Christmas Shoes--the most depressing song I've ever heard!
Any version of Let It Snow, Winter Wonderland, & Rudolph, and I used to love Wham's Last Christmas, Happy Christmas(War is Over), & Bruce Springsteen's Santa Claus is coming to Town, but they are all played way too much now.
There is a song called "All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth" and it's an annoying little song sung by a person with a high voice and he's 'whistling' the song through the gap where is front teeth were.
And has anybody heard the songs "Dominic the Donkey" and "I want a hippopotamus for Christmas"? Simply dreadful!!!
I guess I'm just listening to way too much Christmas music. There are 2 radio stations in my area that have been playing continuous Christmas music for about the past 6 weeks. Getting a little burned out on it all. :wallbang :mooner:

Brian 12-23-2003, 07:09 PM I'm not too fond of the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and it is even worse when The Crystals sing it. I had to listen to my MP3 player for about an hour to get it out of my head.
I hate the Chipmunks when they sing anything Christmas or not. I do like their old cartoons.
I've heard "The Little Drummer Boy" being sung by someone that sounds like Ruben Studdard and I don't like it that much.

jingle bell rock
jingle bells
frosty the snowman
santa clause is coming to town
rudolph the red nosed reindeer
up on the housetop
winter wonderland
let it snow
grandma got ran over by a reindeer (it's just so hilarious that grandma is dead)
rocking around the christmas tree
hey santa
have yourself a merry christmas
and several more. i hate all songs about santa and snow and ****, and that's not a generalization.
ABlairican Pie 12-04-2004, 02:50 AM I actually LIKE "Do They Know It's Christmas?" My mother had kicked me out of her place before I had a chance to find a new one, and I was stressed about how I was going to make it, and I heard the Band Aid song playing at Burger King and I felt sooooo sad...in a good way. :crying: It made me think of how great everyone had it with a roof over their heads and all cozy warm, and I was struggling...
And yes, it took me a while, but I think Santa Baby, either the original or the version by Madonna is a GREAT song!! Love that sort of Betty Boop kinda voice.
Okay, what I HATE:
Take what I had the grave misfortune of hearing tonight, a scat R & B version of Christmas carols at a Christian bookstore, I think it was "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". I HATE HATE HATE smooth jazz versions of Christmas tunes.
My PM supervisor at work was playing something pretty cool today: MACABRE versions of Christmas songs like Frosty the Snowman! We had a ball listening to it!! Imagine--a SPOOKY version of Frosty!!  :frosty:
Moonlight Lady 12-04-2004, 06:01 PM Grandma Got Run over by a reindeer

Brian Damage 12-04-2004, 09:15 PM Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey is another horrible song
Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)
Santa's got a little friend,
His name is Dominick.
The cutest little donkey,
You never see him kick.
When Santa visits his paisons,
With Dominick he'll be.
Because the reindeer cannot,
Climb the hills of Italy.
Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)
Jingle bells around his feet,
And presents on the sled.
Hey! Look at the mayor's derby,
On top of Dominick's head.
A pair of shoes for Louie,
And a dress for Josephine.
The labels on the inside says,
They're made in Brooklyn.
Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)
Children sing, and clap their hands,
And Dominick starts to dance.
They talk Italian to him,
And he even understands.
Cumpare sing,
Cumpare su,
And dance 'sta tarantel.
When jusamagora comes to town,
And brings du ciuccianello.
Hey! Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
It's Dominick the donkey.
Chingedy ching,
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
The Italian Christmas donkey.
(la la la-la la-la la la la la)
(la la la-la la-la la-ee-oh-da)
Hey! Dominick! Buon Natale!
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)
(hee-haw, hee-haw)

Penny Lane 12-04-2004, 10:05 PM I heard the most annoying Christmas song today on the radio! It is "Blue Christmas"

barwars 07-02-2005, 03:03 PM Absolutely no lie.... about 8 years ago, my family and my uncle's family went camping and my grandparents were on their way to come join us at a restaurant nearby, and they didn't show up.
....
A deer had jumped through the windshield of their car onto my grandmother. We were at the hospital for about 6 hours, but after it was over, it was very funny to look back at, especially considering that she says she never heard the song "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" until we played it for her that evening.
It sounds fake, I know.... but I'm telling the complete truth.

James 12-10-2006, 03:44 AM Like the Zombies sang, it's the time of the season, so I'm bumping up this thread!
Anyway, here are my least favorite Christmas songs:
"The Little Drummer Boy" by Bob Seger: While I like Mr. Seger's music in general, I thought he was out of place singing a Christmas carol. Anne Murray's and Chicago's versions are OK, on the other hand.
"Last Christmas" by WHAM!: To me it's just too depressing.
"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" by John and Yoko with the Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir: Every time I hear it I like it less and less.
"Santa Baby": I can't stand this song, especially Madonna's rendition. puke:
"Please Come Home For Christmas" by The Eagles: While the Eagles' version depresses me, Aaron Neville's version is tolerable. (I like the Eagles' music in general, but only up to "Hotel California." But I digress.)
"Step Into Christmas" by Elton John: Every time I hear this I like it less and less.
JoPol_wannabe 12-10-2006, 05:40 PM My least favorites are:
I want an Hippopotamous for christmas- that is so stupied who wants that for christmas and the way that person was singing they shouldn't be allwoed to sing that way
The one by Bing Crosby and David Bowie I can't stand that song
Feed The World (do they know its christmas?) - I just can't stand this song I mean half of the song all they sing is feed the world let them know its christmas time
I can't even stand the original feed the world song
Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg- I like Dan but I just can't stand listening to this song it gets so annoying.

Oh, yeah! How could I forget that one? Oh, and it was sung by a woman named Gayla Peevey, by the way.
Also, the Irish Rovers' version of "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" qualifies. I prefer the Elmo and Patsy version, as well as a parody that came out in 1989 called "New Kids Got Run Over By A Reindeer" (or was it by a John Deere, as in the tractor, about the then boy band New Kids on the Block, predecessors to *NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys).
