When they introduce John,Suzanne,Richard and Don they had them at the carnival or what ever it was.But they introduced Joyce on a boat and Ann leaning on a pole above the beach.

I guess that wanted introduce the cast members throughout the events of the day. I think one can rightfully assume that at the Santa Monica pier, the trio rented a sailboat and went sailing for a while. And Lana followed the trio to the pier to spy on Jack.
