Arnold’s the diner had to owners, Arnold and Al Delvecchio, then on accident Chachi set it on fire, then they turned it into a saloon It lasted 11 great seasons, these happy days were yours and mine After Richie and Lori Beth got married Joanie and Chachi got married, then the show ended, Well ya Laverne and Shirley, Mork and Mindy, Joanie Loves Chachi and a couple others were all spinoffs of Happy Days... Huh? O_O Ravey 12-17-2003, 11:16 PM :woohoo: THERE have been some foolish decisions in the history of popular music. There was the man who didn't sign The Beatles and the person who turned down Madonna. Beyonce insists she hasn't outgrown Destiny's Child. Now added to the dubious list are the record company types who told Beyonce she shouldn't release Crazy in Love. Beyonce wanted it as the lead single from her Dangerously In Love solo album; others thought she should release Naughty Girl, thinking the live horns of Crazy might scare fans of her band Destiny's Child. "I knew it had some magic," Beyonce says of Crazy, "but I kind of doubted myself. Some people I played the song to said `I really like it, I don't know if that should be the first single, maybe you should wheel them in first then put that out'. But I did, and I'm happy." Happy? She's laughing all the way to the damn bank. Crazy in Love went on to spend eight weeks at No.1 in the US alone, propelling an already famous Beyonce way into the celebrity stratosphere. Crazy in Love is an instant classic. With a sample from the Chi-Lites' Are You My Woman, Beyonce's input built it into the kind of pop song people kill for. It launched Beyonce as a solo star, not just a member of Destiny's Child, a band she insists she hasn't outgrown. It has also upped her fame to the point that she's now courted for movies and lucrative advertisements on an almost daily basis and is namechecked in songs from Nelly to OutKast. And her peers certainly recognised her talent two weeks ago when Beyonce scored six Grammy nominations, including a Record Of The Year nod for Crazy In Love. "It's crazy," Beyonce says of Beyonce 2003. "I definitely feel like I've gone to another level, personally and also as an entertainer, a vocalist, a songwriter and just my celebrity has gone up," Beyonce says. "That's something I didn't think about and didn't expect that to happen. I'm just happy Crazy In Love is not just a big song, it's a great song - that doesn't happen all the time." Beyonce is not just ultra nice (off her own bat she shakes everyone's hand when she walks in the room to do our interview - something few stars would bother with), she's ultra-clever. She knows she's been photographed draped over rapper Jay-Z on holidays together but still refuses to admit they're dating. "It's been a long time and we still haven't talked about it, so at this point most people don't bother asking." It's just another way she's learnt to play the media ... and the game. Since the start of Destiny's Child (when she was barely into her teens, remember) she's been just as interested in production and songwriting as she has in singing and dancing. She was the person in the driving seat for her solo album, Dangerously in Love: something few of today's pop starlets can claim with any legitimacy. Beyonce was the one who delayed it again and again, not just so she could finish two movies (Goldmember and The Fighting Temptations) but to make sure the songs were just right. She's the one who sat down and interviewed potential producers. "I only like to work with people I have a good vibe with, I don't care how big they are," she says. "That doesn't matter. When you get people in the studio it's completely based on vibe whether it's going to be a good song or not." Working on the record so long not only meant she was beaten to the solo album market by both her band mates (Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland) but she recorded more than 50 songs, with less than a third of them making Dangerously in Love. One unreleased song, Summertime, was recently leaked in the US and wound up charting, such is Americans' radio hunger for any new Beyonce track. So Beyonce's doing something about it. She was going to keep some of the leftover songs for the next Destiny's Child album, "but that won't be out until the end of 2004 and I don't want to wait that long". Instead she's planning a second solo album as soon as February. "There's some really great songs I didn't use," Beyonce says. As well as Summertime ("it got leaked in America and I was sick because it could be a single, it was kind of a waste") there's a song she did with The Neptunes called My First Time. "Oh, it's so hot," Beyonce says, her eyes instantly lighting up. "It's a great, great song," refreshingly without a hint of modesty. Indeed, with all the strings to her bow, Beyonce is fast becoming as identifiable a brand as Pepsi (of which she recently became the latest face) or L'Oreal (whose products she's been spruiking for several years, with Natalie Imbruglia). She doesn't shirk at the concept of branding Beyonce, even if it means aligning herself with bigger brands for the time being. "The only bad thing about becoming a brand is that sometimes the art is completely forgotten," Beyonce says. "I have so many opportunities but there's plenty I haven't done. Some things I committed to a long time ago that I may not have done now... Basically if there's something I like, I want to be a part of it. But the more things you do that make you a brand, the less people really think about your talent. But I think if you're really talented there's no way you can't acknowledge that. It's important the art doesn't get lost." It's here Beyonce gets on her high horse for the first - and only - time. "Unfortunately people don't care that I write all my songs, people don't care that I can sing my ballads a capella." Then she pauses and realises what she's said. "Well, some people do. I believe that talent doesn't get completely lost, you have to give props where they're due." Beyonce's bank manager certainly realises that she has co-written 99 per cent of her hit singles, both solo and with Destiny's Child. The industry also has taken notice, but playing the game means Beyonce winds up on radio and MTV with talent voids more worried about their ass than their art. She proudly describes Dangerously as an "uncommercial" album. "I feel with Destiny's Child we've sold a lot of records. I've written a lot of No.1 songs. My challenge now is to write really good, timeless songs. That's what I wanted to do. "Baby Boy and Crazy in Love aren't really typical of what's on my record; my album is a classic R'n'B record, that's what I wanted to do. "The music I loved was not as produced, it was more natural and old school. A lot of people had a completely different idea of what my album should be - a lot different to how I thought it should be," she says. Beyonce's vision for the album: timeless songs. "I know, it sets the bar high but that's the aim. I experimented on this album too. Gift from Virgo, it has no chorus, absolutely none. I didn't care. Whatever I liked I put on the album.'' Being Beyonce, that brand in the making, she feels she's at the stage she can take more risks. "Obviously you want people to buy your records but if it didn't sell as many records as Destiny's Child I didn't care. Destiny's Child are doing another record next year. That's not why I did it. "I did this so people could hear me, so they could get a better feeling of who I am and so I can grow artistically. "I mean, I can write a Bootylicious in my sleep, but I didn't want to do that." Really? That's a pretty productive sleep. "Well, not always, I shouldn't say that but it's a silly song. It's silly. But then, that word is in the dictionary now." Bootylicious is not just a new addition to the vocabulary. It was a Destiny's Child hit and Beyonce is keen for the band to make more. She's already workshopping their next album, due at Christmas 2004. "We always did our albums in like two-and-a-half weeks," Beyonce says. "I did my (solo) album over such a long time and now I know how it feels not to rush. Lately I've been thinking about how Destiny's Child will look and sound," she continues. "It's going to be challenging: Kelly has this rock/alternative sound with soul, Michelle's got her gospel thing and my album is so R'n'B, so for us to mix it together and make it work is not easy but it has to be right." Of course, many people think a new Destiny's Child album is just not going to happen at all. "Let people think that," Beyonce says. "It'll just make it more exciting when it is released." Dangerously In Love (Sony) is out now. Herald Sun Elvis Fonzie Dean 12-17-2003, 11:17 PM Originally posted by *MacGyver Gurl* Huh? Britney dresses the way she does because she can't sing. Bee can sing, and if she feels comfortable dressing that way, then more power to her!
