I thought this would be a neat topic for all you old record & Reel-to-Reel owners out there. ;)

Do you know of any specific songs with backward messages?

The most famious one I know is "My Sweet Satan" which can be heard on Stairway To Heaven From Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV Album).

Another one I know is "Turn Me On Deadman" which can be heard on Revolution #9 from The Beatles' White Album.

Does anybody else know of any backward messages on other albums?

I'm sure Capt'A will know all the Ozzy/ Judas Priest/Sabbath/ Iron Maiden ones by heart. I don't! :)

But I do know that some people thought if you played the mumbling backwards at the end of "I'm So Tired" on the White Album, it supposedly says "Paul is dead, man. Miss him, miss him..."

The gibberish at the end of The Beatles' "I'm So Tired" translates backwards to "Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him."

At the end of The Beatles' "Free As A Bird," you can hear George playing the ukelele with a sample of what sounds like John saying, "uh, John Lennon." But if you play it backwards, he says "Turned out nice again."

During the bridge of Paul McCartney's "The World Tonight," he sings (in a reverbed, Jeff Lynne-induced distortion) "I can see the world tonight." If you play that backwards, it sounds like he's saying "Save the animals' fur, Linda Eastman."

My Headbanging (or "Wanker" as he calls himself) Fiancé recalls that Motley Crew had some pretty intresting backward messages on their Shout At The Devil Album. Maybe you guys know more information about that. :)

I vaguely remember hearing about the Motley Crue stuff. Lots of bands were doing it at the time. Mainly the metal bands. By the 80s, it was a big fad. I wasn't a huge Crue fan, so I can't tell ya. I'm almost certain there's *gotta* be a website devoted to just this subject.

There are a lot of theories about what it allegedly says in "Stairway to Heaven", not only "my sweet Satan", but I've heard something about "buying lettuce at Safeway"!! Someone actually came up with that!!

There is supposed to be something about a Pink Floyd song saying Psalm 23 where it says, "The Lord is my shepard," something about "veal cutlets" and giving "karate chops"... This is a rumor going back over 20 years...

The whole brouhaha in the Judas Priest trial over the guys who committed suicide after listening to their "Stained Class" album was that in two songs, "Better By You, Better Than Me", and "Beyond the Realms of Death", was that there were backwards messages in the songs that allegedly prompted them to kill themselves (one survived, disfigured, but died later), something about "I-I-I-I asked her for a peppermint...I asked her to give me one." That's what the jury heard.

I remember that. I also remember when the Church (I think it was the Catholic Church) was accusing rock bands and artists, for being connected to Devil worshipping with their backward messages. And they were also responsible for "recruiting" teens into Devil-Worshipping cults.

Oh my!... Feelin' pret-ty old...

Back in the dark ages when everyone hadda listen to music on vinyl & play them on a Turn Table, it was fashionable to place the turn table in "neutral" in order to manually spin the record backwards to hear 'hidden messages' on certain songs.

:)

sArAh123¼ makes a lot of us feel old.

Let me also add that Reel-To-Reel tape decks had a reverse button that allowed you to listen to music in reverse. You could also turn the tapes backwards manually. :)

Just went to Jenya's site, and I'm totally freaked out! I've never heard backwards messages before, and it's really creepy! "Stairway to Heaven" is one of my favorite oldies, but the seven satanic messages in a row kinda turned me off!

:) I don't feel old, I remember that was the big deal 15-20 years ago. And I STILL miss the days of the turntable!! I still think there are tons of Christians who believe there are "subliminal messages" in songs.

I think most of it is coincidental. So many words sound exactly like "satan" played backwards.

I wish that I had a thing to play them backwords. Man, I'd have a time doing that. :D

"Soy un perdedor"--I'm a loser, in spanish, from Beck's "Loser." That's pretty neat.

:sheep Don't worry, the guys of Led Zeppelin denied they ever did such a thing. There have been reports of finding "satanic" messages on Christian albums. It's all just what a bunch of fear-mongering types will find in music. You can use your imagination to find anything weird on an album.

Yeah, I heard a lot of it was totally fake. It was just really weird listening to all that creepy stuff...alone...in my room...with no one around...:eek4:

BTW: Do you know what the deal was with the whole "Paul is dead" thing?

:sheep In the late 60's, there was a sort of conspiracy theory going on that Paul had died in a car accident, and the Beatles used clues on their albums to hint that. Such as,
at the end of "Strawberry Fields Forever", John cryptically says "I buried Paul", when in fact he just says "Cranberry Sauce". (Why?? Who knows?? ) And on the Abbey Road album further proof is in the album cover: The Beatles appear as members of a funeral party, and because Paul is barefoot, that indicates he is the deceased. A license plate on a car reads "28IF", allegedly meaning that Paul would be 28 years old "IF" he were alive. I think "Revolution Number 9" was also some vague reference to his "death." Also, on the back of the Sgt. Pepper album, Paul's back is turned toward us--we can't see his face. Is that an imposter??

Silly speculations....

Let me add to the Captain's post about another "Paul is Dead" rumour.

If you study The Beatles Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band album cover, you will notice a yellow guitar just below "Beatles" in the flower garden. Many people claimed that it was the word PAUL?

Keep in mind, all this backward "Satanic" stuff became very popular when William Friedkin released The Exorcist in 1973. There was a scene in the film when Fr. Karras (Jason Miller) tape records Regan (Linda Blair) after sprinkling Holy water on her. He later listens to the tape backwards in his apartment, discovering some frightening dialog.

This probably explains why all these 'backward Satanic" messages were suspected on the majority of Heavy Metal albums at the time.

Sorry for bumping up an ancient thread, but I just watched an old That 70's Show episode on DVD where the gang (most especially Fez) thinks there are Satanic messages hidden in their records  I thought of this thread immediately and decided to revive it.

Anyway, I used to have a blast trying to piece together all the 'Paul is dead' clues when I was in high school...some of that stuff used to creep me out. I remember there was one clue where you could call this phone number that was hidden on the back of one of their records (or something like that) and there was supposedly a recording telling you about how Paul is dead (never tried it...too scared. Plus, I would've been in deep crap if I called a long distance number). I doubt it was real, but it was fun to believe anyway. Well, I helped my friend Kenda do a school project on the 'Paul is dead' conspiracy when we were in high school. That was fun. My friend Bethany and I used to play Beatles records backwards on her player and get creeped out.

I love all the sites everyone posted....I am gonna look at some of them again. The Led Zeppelin messages are freaky :(
