Behind Door No. 2: A Revamped GSN
By R. Thomas Umstead
Multichannel News, 12/15/2003 12:03:00 AM

In a major repositioning, Game Show Network will downplay its traditional game-show fare for a more robust interactive-gaming and reality-based content platform, including the planned debut of a new interactive-TV-based digital channel in 2004.

GSN will shed its name and logo next month for a new moniker, which it wouldn’t disclose, and a look that reflects its new programming identity, according to president Rich Cronin.

He expects to detail the changes at next month’s Television Critics Association gathering in Hollywood.

The first casualty of the new approach was Bob Boden, the network’s senior vice president of programming and an avid fan of classic game shows. He left this past week amid plans for the network to devote as much as 75% of its primetime lineup to casino gaming and video-game programming.

"This is a major push for us," said Cronin, adding that the rebranding efforts have received the blessing of network owners Sony Pictures Entertainment and Liberty Media Corp.

Cronin wouldn’t talk about shows that would be added to the revamped network, but he did say the service would launch other casino-based programming, as well as video-game content.

For more on GSN, please see R. Thomas Umstead’s story on page one of Monday’s issue of Multichannel News

I got GSN in March 2002 , just before it started going downhill. I can`t believe they`re gonna ruin it by putting all that new crap on. According to tvgameshows.net, the only game shows they`re keeping are Millionaire and Match Game. Those stupid original shows were bad enough, but this is really, really gonna suck!

I was hoping the big news was TPIR coming back, but apparently there`s no chance of that happening now. I just wonder if they actually think people are still gonna watch after this.

I still love "Match Game". But what happened to GSN? Here's an article from tvgameshows.net:

Report: GSN to be GSN No More

If Tom Umstead's report in Multichannel News is correct, Game Show Network will be Game Show Network no more next year.

TVgameshows.net had been clued in for a major announcent from GSN three weeks ago. Umstead's report Monday confirms the rumblings throughout the industry. In a major repositioning which is certain to create major disappointment in its core audience, GSN will junk it's nine-year-old name and six-year-old logo and begin to de-emphrasize its classic programming, including both repeats and traditional studio game shows.

The network is expected to retain "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and "Match Game", its most successful shows, but even "Lingo" is expected to be on the bubble after the current run of 65 original shows.

A new lineup, effective in March, is expected to be announced this week. The revamped network will focus more on casino games, interactive gaming and reality-based programming. Included will be a spinoff interactive digital channel next year.

GSN president Rich Cronin's only quote to Umstead: "This is a major push for us." Cronin is expected to detail more at next month's Television Critics Association confab in Hollywood. TVgameshows.net has requested a phone hookup with Cronin this week.

Senior programming vice president Bob Boden departed last week which was a major shoe to drop in the transition.

Among the possible names mentioned in other media: All-Games Channel (AGN), The Games Channel and The Interactive Channel. Cronin has confirmed none of those new names.

TVgameshows.net will develop a series of stories on what has led to the decision, which has the lesssing of GSN's ownership partners, Sony Pictures Television and Liberty Digital Media.

We only represent a small portion of the viewing population. There could be lots of people that will like the change. I honestly don't think peitioning will work. What I plan to do is sit back and hope the new programs crash and burn and they'll have no choice but to return to traditional studio game shows.

Here is the info from the TCA Winter Tour:

Call Us 'GSN' From Now On ... Game Show Network Shortens Its Name to GSN

Network Re-branding and New Primetime Programming Premieres Week of March 15 at 10 PM

GSN Acquires Popular Series THE MOLE and SPY TV

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Jan. 9 -- With an expansion strategy that
builds on its game show base to add reality, casino and video game programming, Game Show Network is formalizing the already common use of GSN, and revitalizing its on-air, look, sound and feel with an exciting new graphics package.
While continuing with a mix of game shows featuring 84 hours per week of interactive play-along, GSN will debut five new game series in a variety of genres every weeknight at 10:00 PM ET/PT beginning Monday, March 15. Among its original new series are GSN'S WORLD SERIES OF BLACKJACK, the network's first original casino game series; its first relationship game, FAKE-A-DATE,
hosted by "Joe Millionaire's" Evan Marriott; and reality comedy series KENNY VS. SPENNY, which features two friends competing against one another in absurd games of physical endurance and mental toughness. GSN will also debut an original two-hour documentary entitled VIDEO GAME INVASION: THE HISTORY OF A
GLOBAL OBSESSION on Sunday, March 21. In addition, GSN has also acquired the popular reality series THE MOLE, and SPY TV, the hidden-camera comedy series.
Translating the fun and entertainment of the game play experience to its television viewers in more than 53 million homes nationwide, GSN is also continuing to expand upon its commitment to developing complementary interactive offerings for its primetime programming. GSN will unveil real time sync-to-broadcast interactive play-along components for each of the new
series when they premiere this March. In the case of GSN'S WORLD SERIES OF BLACKJACK, for example, players will be able to register online at gsn.com and play for free in two ways: 1) a special stand-alone version of the game 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 2) real-time competition against other viewers.
Elaborating on its expanded programming commitment and rebranding effort, GSN's President and CEO Rich Cronin said, "As the leading network for interactive game shows, it is natural for us to expand to a variety of game-related programming. Since we were already using the name 'GSN' on-air and at gsn.com, and our viewers and the industry also frequently used it, we decided to make GSN our official name, adding the tagline 'The Network for Games.' Our vision is to become the global leader in interactive television games, and with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Liberty Media Corporation as our parents, we are perfectly positioned to fulfill this."
GSN's new on-air look, includes a bold yet stylized GSN logo supported by a striking color palette, graphic animation and sound package that conveys the network's dominance in all things game. The new on-air look is a sophisticated yet playful interpretation of today's game environment. Angular and fast paced, the new GSN logo lives in a multifaceted game box that flips, spins and unfolds to reveal program teases, tune-in info and sponsorship billboards, among other elements.
Said GSN Senior Vice President of Marketing Dena Kaplan: "We are excited to launch this distinctive network brand package that will appeal to the player in all of us. We will complement our new on-air and on-line packaging with a multi-platform national consumer brand and tune-in advertising and promotional campaign."
While original and acquired studio-based game shows will still comprise the majority of GSN's schedule, the network will unveil three new original series, one original documentary and two new acquisitions in March -- all game-related programs.
GSN will kick off its first "new look" series on Monday, March 15th at 10 p.m., with the debut of GSN'S WORLD SERIES OF BLACKJACK, the network's first original casino game series, which has players vying for $250,000 in prize money. This weekly series will feature the world's top blackjack players and
tournament players competing against each other for world blackjack champion.
GSN selected Blackjack as its premiere because it is the most popular card game played in casinos around the world.
On Tuesday, March 16th, at 10 p.m., television's smartest reality show, THE MOLE, makes its way to GSN. The first two seasons of the exciting "whodunit" hit game series THE MOLE, as well as CELEBRITY MOLE HAWAII, will air weekly in the Tuesday 10 p.m. time slot. GSN will begin on March 16 with CELEBRITY MOLE HAWAII, which featured Kathy Griffin, Corbin Bernsen, Stephen Baldwin, Michael Boatman, Kim Coles, Frederique Van Der Wal, Erik von Detten and host Ahmad Rashad. The first two "civilian" seasons of THE MOLE were hosted by CNN newsman Anderson Cooper and the series is produced by Stone
Stanley Entertainment
On Wednesday, March 17th at 10 p.m., GSN introduces its new lover meets faker competition, FAKE-A-DATE, hosted by "Joe Millionaire's" Evan Marriott.
The unique relationship game features one lucky contestant paired up with two singles of the opposite sex. At the end of the dual date, the contestant must choose between the dates, one of which is truly looking for love, while the other is hoping to fake their way to winning a luxury trip with their real-life significant other.
On Thursday, March 18th at 10 p.m., GSN introduces viewers to KENNY VS. SPENNY, featuring two friends who devise and compete in absurd but hysterical games of physical endurance and mental prowess in an effort to prove which one is ultimately champion. Among the unique competitions, for example, is a test
of stamina, wherein the determined Spenny sets his mind to staying awake longer than the lazy Kenny, who rises to the challenge by downing massive amounts of caffeine and other stimulants. By the end of the competition, the sleep-deprived combatants provide viewers with lots of laughs and tips for how
not to lose this competition at home.
Another exclusive acquisition for GSN debuts on Friday, March 19th at 10 p.m. SPY TV takes hidden-camera comedy to the next level by putting people in extreme situations and recording their unpredictable reactions. SPY TV pranks prove that people's spontaneous reactions in extreme situations are wilder, wackier and funnier than anything that could ever be scripted.
On Sunday, March 21 at 9:00 PM ET/PT, GSN debuts its original two-hour documentary VIDEO GAME INVASION: THE HISTORY OF A GLOBAL OBSESSION. This documentary will cover the birth and explosive growth of video games and will be hosted by skateboard and video game icon Tony Hawk.
As previously announced, GSN is also partnering with National Lampoon to produce the first-ever Greek-flavored summer games spoof, NATIONAL LAMPOON'S GREEK GAMES, which will debut in May 2004. The series features fraternities and sororities competing in a variety of outrageous sports, including the Pita
Bread Discus Toss and Greek Olive Oil Wrestling. The competition culminates in July with a two-hour special featuring the top fraternities and sororities battling it out for the gold. GSN and National Lampoon joined forces previously on NATIONAL LAMPOON'S FUNNY MONEY.

I could live with the new strategy if they would bring back Classic Sunday night. Middle of the night airings do me no good. I could tape them, but why go through the hassle?

I have no realistic expectations of this happening though. My guess is that they'll leave the line-up somewhat constant immediately after the changeover but then, slowly but surely, old favorites will start disappearing from the line-up to be replaced with new fare.

I hate to be skeptical, but I've seen this happen with other networks (AMC and TNN for example).

That's great! We only got 5 days left for the old GSN to rap it up and make way for the new GSN.

Here is an article according to tvgameshows.net:

Monday: The Name Changes

The image preparation has been underway for nearly a month. ######## fans have long ago used the term GSN as an abbreviation.

Monday, the transition is offical: Game Show Network is dead as an identity after nearly 10 years. GSN: The Network for Games becomes the new monkker.

Aside from the 10:00 PM time slot where a series of non-traditional games, documentries and network repeats will be inserted, viewers will probably sense little change at the outset.

"Who Want to Be a Millionaire", GSN's highest-rated off-network series; "Match Game" (my favorite along with another of my favorite show "Full House") and "Lingo", the top-ranked original, will still be in place.

However, GSN is pinning its hopes high on the $250,000 "World Series of Blackjack" as a flagship in the current craze of casino games. ESPN's success last summer with the "World Series of Poker" (which continues to be rerun ad infinitum) spawned Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown" and Fox Sports Net's "Late Night Poker".

Former "Joe Millionaire" Evan Marriot will helm "Fake-A-Date", GSN's first original attempt at a documentry. Canadian import "Kenny Vs. Spenny" is definitely out of the non-traditional bank.

Another opening week entity, a Tony-Hawk-narrated 2-hour journey into video games, is GSN's second attempt at an original documentary---though outside the realm of what its loyalists had hoped. The retrospective into the "Press Your Luck" story of Michael Larson's six-figure victory in 1984 stands as the highest-rated broadcast in the history of Game Show Network.

That's very sad! Last night I made an avatar as a memorial tribute to one of the best network in the world for classic game shows. It will lasted until the end of the week.

Last night, I saw "World Series of Blackjack" on the new GSN. I thought it was an OK show. It will be on again if I can use my DVR. :D
