I loved this epesode. Jo was smart.

I have mixed feelings about this episode... I think the message is very important - drunk driving is not cool - but it is filled with so much misinformation that it is not even funny.

As much as I love 80s tv, the "very special" episodes like this one always upset me a bit. Art should imitate life. I never really liked the way they portrayed these messages.

I have a question for anyone that was at least older then I was (probably 2) when this episode was aired. It's fairly obvious that the college students were "binge drinking" the term I hear all the time on my college campus, but has that term always been used? Was there another term that was used or is this the latest dreamed up by college administrators? Thanks if anyone knows.

I'm stuck at school for another week because of crew and the senior week festivities are going on. Anyway, tonight is the "go to every bar in town and have a drink", but luckily all the bars are in walking distance. It's a little ironic that episode aired tonight.

It seems to me that the term "binge drinking" hasn't been around for long. Sounds sort of politically correct, don't you think? (Those guys weren't drunks, they were "binge drinkers." She isn't short -- she's "vertically challenged." <grin> )

Other terms for it back in the 80s? Actually, "party" pretty much covers it. If you "partied hard" - you were Marshall and company.

Hey, coily2 -- loved your reference to 'a very special Facts of Life!' This one *did* have "Afterschool Special" written all over it! <grin>

I remember hearing that term now and then in college - but it always referred to fraternity hazing and the like.

In any case, 5 beers does not equate binge drinking. I'm not advocating drinking, and I am most certainly NOT advocating drunk driving, but they were still a little bit away from being totally sloshed....

coily2-my drinking has been suspended for the time being because of crew. We never had a drinking policy this year (the abstinence one of last year was a complete disaster) but it's sort of understood at this point in the season to lay off the alcohol. Every time you get drunk you lose a week's worth of athletic training.

Thinking back to the alcohol awareness lecture required for all freshmen I believe six beers equals binge drinking now. I know I did not pay attention, but that's what I seem to remember.

Wow... college is much less fun than I remember it http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/wink.gif My freshmen lecture went like this: 6 shots? You'd be getting silly. 6 martinis? You'd be plastered. 6 beers? You'd be warming up.

yea.. but i just thought this was important info for those who do not realize this... right now when you are in college (18-21) during those years you are NOT able to drink.... but when FOL was on... the law allowed those who were 18 and older to drink... which is kinda cool but kinda stupid becuase if you were 18 and in high school you could go out and get drunk (legally) so tootie's brother was not breaking the law by drinking.. he just broke the law by driving after drinking... just thought at was importantèe to all of those who didn't know! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm 20 right now, but if I really wanted to have alcohol and I wasn't stupid about it (like go up to the RA and say I have alcohol or drink with the door open) I could and nobody would care. The legal age may be 21, but any college student could tell you, if you want alcohol, you're going to get it.

I think the law may have changed around the time this episode aired. The federal government basically bullied the states into raising the legal drinking age by holding out federal highway funds.
