im a big elo fan and was wondering if any of you also like them

Great band! Love "Overture 10538" & 'Turn to Stone". The early stuff w/ heavy cellos is fantastic.

Jeff Lynne is a great pop song writer, but I wish his sound wasn't so- "samey". You can hear the same thing on that Beatles Anthology recording 'Free as a Bird". That unmistakable snare drum thing did throughout the 80s on various albums he produced was annoying. And I also wish someone else had produced George Harrison's "Brainwashed"...like George Martin.

However, I was told ELO's recent Zoom cd is amazing. I'm eager to hear it.

Yep. You'll notice the snare drum sound, as well as the "glistening" acoustic guitars and "heavenly" backing vocals on the following albums he produced:

George Harrison - Cloud Nine
Paul McCartney - Flaming Pie
Roy Orbison - Mystery Girl
Roy Orbison - King Of Hearts
Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Into The Great Wide Open
Del Shannon - Rock On!
Traveling Wilburys - Volume One
Traveling Wilburys - Volume Three

Those are the main ones I can think of. I'd like to hear all those albums remixed and produced by someone else.

But I do like a few of ELO's songs.

Oh, and I don't think he did too much of a butcher job on Brainwashed, but that's only because Dhani was in the control room with him the whole time.

My friends and I were always cringing at the knowledge that Jeff Lynne would be involved in a project with our favorite artists.
Couldn't he have mixed up the approach just a little?

Would it have killed him?

Though I like most every one of those albums listed, it is with regret that they all have that patent Lynne late '80s sound.

Why couldn't he just stick to the early ELO Beatles rip-off approach he used with his own stuff?

True story - when I was fifteen and knew nothing of album production, ABC premiered the song and video "Free As A Bird" after the first installment of "The Beatles Anthology." As the song started, I turned to my dad and said, "Why does this sound like Tom Petty?"

I like their song "Don't bring me down",best!!! :rock:

My former college roomate ranted and raved to me for like an hour on the phone when he heard that Jeff Lynne was producing the new Beatle single.

You can say he had a definite opinion when you consider he lived on the opposite coast.

He also said, "Why can't he be content ruining Tom Petty's albums?"

I love ELO. I of course didn't live in the '70s, but thanks to classic rock stations i have found these great bands. My favorite ELO songs are "Evil Woman" and "Sweet Talking Woman."

I LOVE Mr. Blue Sky!!! I also like Livin' Thing, Can't Get It Out of My Head, Turn to Stone, Telephone Line, and Strange Magic.

I love "Do Ya," but the original version of that song by ELO's parent group, the Move, is just as great! :)
