How much longer do you think VHS will be around? I think they'll be around as long as CD's have been running against casette tapes, about 17 years. What about everyone else?

I don't think they will last another 5/10 years. Stores are already discontinuing them.

I think about 11 more years, I just couldn't imagine VHS being gone in 4 or 5 years. But I doubt they'll ever have much of a comeback, like vinyl- the only place VHS will be seen in about 30 years will be in collectors archives- at the minute there's a 'Beta Preservation' club or something.

VHS will be around for at least 10 years.
At least blank ones.
I think they will discontinue making movies on VHS well before then.

Another point you have to consider is that VHS tapes will be in circulation for the next 20 years because:

1. People will still have to convert all their tapes to DVD.

2. And people will still trade and sell and such.

I completely agree with you there. Blank VHS tapes will be around for as long as the prices of DVD recorders are still high. I'm very certain they'll stop coming out with VHS movies within a year or two...I mean, come on. Like half the new movies I see that are out now are barely coming out for the VHS.

You've made some pretty good points there. :)

VHS is on its way out. I can't see them being around for much longer, they are fading fast.

I also think vhs wont be around much longer, between dvd recorders, on-demand tv and pvrs (tivo-type machines), there's other devices that can do what we've used vhs/vcrs for. The speed and acceptance of new technology will determine how soon vhs will disappear, but it will happen.

I like my vcr...its easy and convient to have in my room!! alright, so I have a dvd player downstairs, I still like vhs

I do hope they will keep making VHS/DVD combos though.

I think they'll be around forever, they'll just become harder and harder to find. Cassettes are still around, and as someone mentioned, cd's have been around for 17 years. You can still buy cassettes at big chains like tower records and stuff. On the other hand, most music clubs have discontinued their cassette programs, so like I said, I think they'll be around forever, just not so easy to find.

I believe the assumption that they'll be gone in three to five years, is way off. Most of my friends still don't have DVD players, and I heard once, (I don't remember where), that only about half of the American population have DVD players. I seriously doubt that those 50 percent will all buy DVD players within the next three to five years, so as long as there are still so many people buying VHS tapes, I seriously doubt they'll be gone anytime soon, if ever.

Yeah, that's what I think too. I don't know very many people without DVD players, so VHS is definetly on the way out!

I don't know about that. I'm with Columbia House, and every new release DVD they offer me, they also offer on video cassette. Also, I have a friend who doesn't have a DVD player, and she buys new release videos pretty much every pay day. From what Iv'e seen, new release videos seem to still be coming out as frequently as before, but maybe I'm wrong.

I LOVE MY VCR!!! I am not looking forward to converting my hundreds of tapes to DVD's at all. I will defintely have VHS tapes around for many more years, as long as my VCR works or I can buy another one, that's the way I will continue. I just am not a big fan of DVD's yet. I know, I probably need to move into the 21st Century, but I don't want too. :(

I just don't see VHS going away entirely for another 10 years... I still see VHS everywhere.

But you know, the times I DO watch TV and watch the commercials and when they show a commercial for a movie coming out to video, they usually only show the DVD it's on, not both VHS/DVD's like they did a few years ago. I know they're still releasing them to VHS...

I remember the very first time I saw a Compact disc player. One of my teachers got one in 1985 and she brought it to class and showed it to us. I remember thinking, What the heck is that?
It was a portible discman type player and she paid something like $500 for it.

I have both a dvd player in my room and a vcr. I still use my vcr more, but thats only because I don't have a very big dvd collection, and because of the shows that I have taped. I figure that vhs movies will quit being made in about 5 years, but there will still be blank tapes around for another 10 year, until dvd recorders go down to the price of vcr's now. Thats just my opinion though.

Oh, I'm sorry. My parents got their CD player in '86. I like VHS better than DVD, because you can stop in one place, rewind, and more. Maybe it's just that I've used it longer, lol.

vhs's suck. dvd's are way better... more features.

but i hate movies so i dont have any of either except for this metallica dvd that came with st. anger... awesomeeeeee

Yep. Mine has 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x rewinding/fast-forwarding speeds, and it also has a feature where you can skip on to the next scene. :D

But yes, other than that, you never have to rewind your DVD's when it's time to bring it back to the movie store. :D

Most stores dont carry VHS anymore, and if they do, its only a small amount.

I think that even over the course of 2004, less and less VHS will be released. I think that by 2005 only the BIGGEST movies will be released on VHS (mostly Disney)

I think its good that DVD is taking over.

I really will miss VHS. I am still very attached to it :cries:

I have a lot of VHS tapes and DVD's. If VHS tapes won't be around in the next several years, who knows what will happen next.
