Hello, all.

My new favorite Christmas album, next to Celine's, is the Carpenters' "Christmas Portrait." I was just listening to it today, and I think it's absolutely amazing!

I think that Karen Carpenter has the purest, cleanest voice I've ever heard, and every time I think about how young she was when she died, I can't help but feel like the world lost something great. My favorites of hers are "The Christmas Waltz" and "Merry Christmas Darling," but I also really really love Richard's piano playing. His work on "Carol of the Bells" and "O Holy Night" makes me wish I'd kept up with my playing a little more! He's so talented.

Anybody know of this album? What do you think of it?

I have a couple of albums by the Carpenters and I don't have a Christmas album. I heard some of the Christmas songs by the Carpenters has being played on the radio.

Oh, my God...it's awesome! If you like the Carpenters, I would suggest getting it. You can listen to samples at MSN Entertainment. :D

I really like the song "It's Christmas Time." If you listen to it, it's unbelievable how long Karen can sing without taking a breath!

I love The Carpenters, and I'm sad to this day over Karen's passing. She did sing like an angel. When you heard her voice, there was no guessing who it was.

I don't have their Christmas album. I have a various artists CD with the Carpenter's rendition of, The Christmas Song. It's beautiful.

I like "Merry Christmas Darling" and the Carpenters' take on "Home For The Holidays," and I like how they made "Sleigh Ride" a bona fide Christmas song by changing the lyric "There's a birthday party at the home of Farmer Gray" to "There's a Christmas party. . . ." But who's singing that line? Richard??? He should stick to piano.

Also, as I recall. . . . "Merry Chirstmas Darling" was originally put out as a single in 1970, but Richard overdubbed and remixed it for A Christmas Portrait eight years later. I'm sure that's right, because the album came out in 1978 and I remember hearing "Merry Christmas Darling" as far back as 1976 or 1977! :)

Hey!

You're totally right about that line in "Sleigh Ride"! I'm not sure who's singing it, though, because there seem to be two different guys singing solos. One of 'em's Richard, though. Whatever. :p

Not sure when "Merry Christmas Darling" was released. I tried looking it up, but I didn't get anywhere.

I just love Karen's voice more and more every time I listen to the album. I think one of the appealing things about it is that, even where you're listening to a recording, she sounds like she's smiling as she sings. There are only a few people who do that, and it makes for an enjoyable song. She just has such a clear and pristine voice, and she performs with such ease...it's really amazing. :D
