View Full Version : Guilty Pleasures
Steve M. 12-06-2003, 09:00 PM Here are a few records I like but feel guilty admitting to liking:
"Wichita Lineman," Glen Campbell. My mother had the record and she played it over and over when I was little, so it brings back fond memories of my childhood.
"Superstar," the Carpenters. Ditto, plus it was co-written by Leon Russell, whom I've always liked.
"This Guy's In Love With You," Herb Alpert. He sings it so unpretentiously! :)
"Magdelena," Leo Sayer. A soft, somewhat spooky ballad from Sayer's big-selling Endless Flight LP from 1976. Best lyric - "She tells me that she wants me/ Then she tells me not to bother / She tells me that I couldn't hold a candle to her father."
"How Can You Mend A Broken Heart," the Bee Gees. Their number-one hit from the summer of 1971. One of Robin Gibb's best lead vocals.
"You and Me," Alice Cooper. A ballad covered by Sinatra is not exactly what Alice is all about, but I like it.
"Rocky Mountain High," John Denver. This song made Denver cool for two minutes in the seventies becasue people thought it was about drugs! Plus, it has an anti-suburban-sprawl message.
"We're All Alone," Rita Coolidge. This cover version from Leon Russell's ex-girlfriend actually rocks harder (thanks to a guitar solo at the end) than Boz Scaggs's original version!
"Hair Of the Dog," Nazareth. Any song revolving around a lyric like "Now yo' messin' with a sonabitch" has my approval! :D
Jrnygrl 12-06-2003, 09:33 PM Great question!! My biggest guilty musical pleasure is listening to anything by Steve Perry or Journey. Cheesy 80's band but hey Perry has a beautiful voice that melded well with Neal Schon's guitar, and some of the songs were good! I also like listening to music by Herb Alpert, Doris Day, big bands, and some classical.
:winkgrin

great record. I only "love" a handful of Carpenters songs, but this is one of them (along with Yesterday Once More and Sweet Sweet Smile)
Dean Winchester 12-06-2003, 10:47 PM Yoko Ono is a guilty pleasure for me. She's so misunderstood. If she wasn't connected to Lennon, people would understand her better.
I confess to loving a lot of bad 70's/80's soft rock, like Air Supply, Chicago (I know old Chicago isn't shameful, but I also like the David Foster/Peter Cetera ballad era), Paul Davis (65 Love Affair is a perfect pop song), Juice Newton, etc..
I like just about everything, tho rap doesn't float my boat much
Kay Scarpetta 12-07-2003, 12:07 AM ...classical music

aww I saw the movie Spice World today, and I hadn't seen it since 1998 and it made me feel so nostalgic towards my spice girls cd, and I immediately got them out...I still remember the lyrics.
Janice 12-07-2003, 12:28 AM I shouldn't even post because I don't feel the least bit guilty about loving:
The Carpenters
Barry Manilow
The Monkees
Neil Diamond
The Bee Gees
John Denver
Yanni
Air Supply
REO Speedwagon
Frank Sinatra
Patsy Cline
Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass
Jrnygrl 12-07-2003, 12:31 AM Oh forgot, the Partridge Family!

I can't. I bow to superior forces. :D
Steve M. 12-19-2003, 12:37 AM Nevertheless, here are two more:
Kenny Rogers, "The Gambler." Kenny's "Rocky Mountain High" - i.e., his only truly great song.
Roger Whittaker, "The Last Farewell." Don't ask me how I could possibly like the signature song from Whittaker, the British Kenny Rogers! (You can never get enough of Roger Whittaker! ;) :D )

sad thing is, we really believed they could sing at the time despite the thick accents when they talked. I confess tho, Girl You Know It's True still kicks, LOL.
dandelion wine 12-19-2003, 01:44 AM I don't feel too guilty for admitting this, but I love disco. And cheesy bubblegum songs from the 60s and 70s.

That's true and I admit that when I hear "Girl You Know It's True," or "Blame It On The Rain," I'll sing along.

ever since the local top 40 station did a Blame It On The Rain parody called "Poo Poo On The Rain", I can never listen to BIOTR the same way. I always think "Whatever you do, don't let the rain poop on you".
Too bad BIOTR was given to MV, because I do think it was a good song, but it will forever be tarnished by the fact that it was performed by Milli Vanilli.

As one critic said at the time, we should have known something was up when they sang like Sam and Dave but talked like Hans and Franz!

It's a shame that everything came crashing down like that.

love them too. PSB are putting out a complete video collection DVD. I loved their last album. Too bad top 40 radio kinda drifted away from them after the lae 80's because I think they've gotten better with age

I love ABBA too. I think time has been much kinder to them than anyone thought. In the 70's, people dismissed them as bubblegum, but in the 90's and today, I think people have been able to give the music fairer evaluations because I don't think anyone expected it to hold up so well 20-30 years later.

I even kinda like Britney Spears

phoebe7165 12-21-2003, 01:42 PM Barry Manilow!!! I loved his music as a kid, and I still love him.
And I still love the 'hair' bands. Well, they're not as flashy as they used to be--Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Poison, Motley Crue, etc.
Also, the 'corporate rock' bands--Styx & Journey. I've always loved Dennis DeYoung's & Steve Perry's voices.
Dean Winchester 12-25-2003, 10:32 PM another major guilty pleasure
earlier today, I found myself "rocking out" to the Flashdance soundtrack, LOL
