Garth: What I don't 'Like'

"What I Like About You" revolves around two single sisters, but series star Jennie Garth doesn't want its sole focus to be gals chasing guys.
This season, Garth has encouraged the writers on the WB's Friday night comedy to have the central characters be more than boy-crazy.

"I encourage the writers to show the girls being fun and independent and doing stuff that isn't guy-related," said Garth, who plays strait-laced sister Valerie to Amanda Bynes' spontaneous Holly.

"I've always been a huge advocate that the show not become about the two girls going out and finding boys to validate their self-worth," she added. "We all know that our lives don't revolve around guys, for the most part."

Garth's older and wiser role comes more than a decade after she played the field on "Beverly Hills 90210."

"I know that I'm moving into a different age bracket and I don't mind that, because I've done the '90210' teen angst drama with the growing up pains and all of that," said Garth, 31. "I'm definitely ready to move on and do something different."

That something comes in the form of a Christmas movie, "Secret Santa," to be shown on NBC Dec. 14 at 9 p.m.

In it, Garth plays a cynical, big-city journalist who is reminded of the meaning of Christmas when she visits a small town to track a mysterious philanthropist. The film also stars TV veterans Barbara Billingsley ("Leave It to Beaver") and Charlie Robinson ("Night Court").

"The character was the main reason why I did the movie, because I felt connected to her," Garth said. "I have a similar dry wit."
