I think Bob's sister was in the grocery store the other night. I was working the closing shift last Friday (the day after Turkey Day) and it was basically dead, even for a Friday night. Anyhoo, it was still at least a half hour until closing time and since there were hardly any customers, I shut my register down and started putting the overstock back. (Overstock is stuff that customers
decide they don't want, but are too lazy to put it back themselves.) I stopped by the bakery and started chatting with Kathy, who works at the bakery and is sort of a friend of mine. Kathy was in the process of putting the day's unsold
baked goods into packages for the "Reduced Items" rack. I went to give her a hand and this middle-aged woman comes up and demands a half dozen of freshly baked jelly donuts. (Who looks for freshly made stuff so close to closing time anyway?) Kathy pointed over to the Reduced Items rack and told her there were
still some of today's jelly donuts over there. Jelly Donut Woman starts shrieking that she wants fresh baked jelly donuts and she wants them NOW!!! We both tried to explain to her that the donuts on the Reduced Items rack were still the day's donuts and she was actually saving herself at least $1.50 by buying them for the reduced price, even though they were still the day's
donuts. She demanded to see the manager, claiming that we were hiding the jelly donuts from her. While I'm still trying to reason with her, Kathy walks back behind the counter, takes a box of jelly donuts that she hadn't put out on the rack yet, opens the box, puts them on the fresh goods tray, and said "Here! I found you some fresh jelly donuts, Ma'am." Donut Woman smirks and said, "I KNEW you were hiding them from me!" and marches over to the checkout area. We waited until she was safely out of earshot before we started laughing and Kathy said, "Thank goodness she didn't take anyone hostage like in that Wings episode when that guy got upset over the jelly donut!" We laughed about that until we really had to get back to work. I never did find out if the woman got the donuts for the regular price or the reduced price though. She had left by the time I got back up front.
I really don't understand the big deal of getting Reduced Price baked goods instead of fresh ones. To me, they still taste fresh a few days later. Plus, I can save a little money from buying them for the day-old price.
That was such a funny Wings episode
