View Full Version : Joe and Helen....The "Engaged" Episodes

NICK is now showing the episodes where Joe and Helen are engaged and planning for their wedding....

I know that many "Wings" fans don't care for the later episodes with Joe and Helen as an engaged (and later married) couple, but in watching these shows again, I think that the engagement and marriage were GREAT for the Joe-Helen relationship.

After their earlier breakup, there were a couple of "spark" moments where it looked like they MIGHT get back together....but aside from those, the "Joe and Helen" relationship between their breakup (at the end of Season 2) and their engagement tended to be strained and awkward.

They TRIED to go back to being "just friends", but somehow it never felt quite right....there was always this underlying feeling of tension and resentment there, and both Joe and Helen NEVER passed up an opportunity to give each other a nasty "I Can't Believe That I Actually DATED You!"-type dig....and most of those were more cruel than funny!

Joe and Helen really couldn't get THAT involved with each other's lives and problems without crossing over into that "romantic relationship" area....there was always that cool distance there.

However, once they became engaged the barriers came down and they could be themselves again....and that included FIGHTING like CRAZY! And as we all know, when Joe and Helen fight, it's usually HILARIOUS!
NOW they could argue over things like what kind of a wedding to have, what kind of a house to build, where they would spend their anniversary, etc.

Sorry for the long-winded post here, but I just think that bringing Joe and Helen together as a PERMANENT couple wasn't the "kiss of death" for the series. Sure, maybe the romantic tension was gone, but those two had a lot of OTHER things to be "tense" about!

I mostly blame the writers for the decline of Wings. I think Joe and Helen were a great couple. Some of the upcoming episodes are great ones, including the one where Helen and Antonio found out they were still married!

yeah, I totally agree with you pilotguy.
I always thought it was a really good thing that Joe and Helen got married.

I'm enjoying their engagement. Helen running through the airport with her wedding dress was hilarious. Score one for Lowell, lol.
It was funny how Joe was going crazy with the Reverend who talked so slow. Reverend Valium as Joe referred to him.

I'm waiting for the episode when Joe and Helen are married, and Chris Elliot plays their insane neighbor along with a wife. I saw it once, and it was so funny. I'd love my husband to see it. Does anyone know what season that airs?

We're huge Chris Elliot fans. He's a hoot these days on Everybody Loves Raymond.

"Like A Neighbor Scorned" airs near the beginning of the final season. You got about a month to go. Sorry.

Thanks for giving me the name of the episode. I'll check the episode guide. A month isn't so long. It'll ring in the New Year. :)
