WABC-TV Is The Top-Rated Station and 'Eyewitness News' the Winner in the Morning, Evening and 11pm News Races in New York's November'03 Nielsen Sweeps Report
NEW YORK, Nov. 27 -- WABC-TV is the top-rated station in the
New York market, posting a 4.5 rating/10 share and delivering more households Monday-Sunday 6am-2am, than any other station in the DMA. This is according to Nielsen's November'03 New York overnight ratings data, which also shows "Eyewitness News" is the clear winner in the Monday-Friday local news races at 5am, 6am, 5pm, 6pm and 11pm, while its noon telecast is only one-tenth of a rating point away from first place.
In addition to being the ratings leader, WABC-TV shows rating and share growth over last year. Following are highlights of the station's powerful performance in the November'03 sweeps period:
* Top-rated at 11pm and 17% Share Growth - "Eyewitness News" with Bill Ritter, Liz Cho, Sam Champion and Scott Clark posts a 7.9 rating/14 share to take first in the 11pm news race. This ABC/7 newscast is 14% and 17% higher in rating and share, respectively, than it was one year ago, while over the same period, "NewsChannel 4 At 11" is down 9% and 13%, respectively, in rating and share. This is the first time since Feb'99 that "Eyewitness News" has won at 11pm in a major sweeps period.
In primetime, the ABC Network delivers a 10 share to match its year-ago performance in New York. The NBC Network's 12 share is down from Nov'02 by 2 points (-14%) while the CBS Network's growth by 1 point to a 13 share makes it the leader in primetime.
* Top-rated News at 6pm - "Eyewitness News" scores a win with a 7.4 rating/13 share, Monday-Friday. It holds a 23% ratings advantage over nearest competitor "NewsChannel4 at 6", while beating WCBS-TV's newscast by 100% and more than quadrupling WNYW-TV's news ratings. Bill Ritter and Liz Cho anchor the Monday-Friday telecasts of "Eyewitness News."
* Top-rated News at 5pm and 8% Share Growth - "Eyewitness News" with Roz Abrams and Diana Williams is the top-rated news in the time period, posting a 7.0 rating/14 share. "Eyewitness News" is up 1 share point over its year-ago performance, while "Live At Five" sustains losses of 12% and 8% in rating and share, respectively.
* Top-rated News at 5am and 6am - "Eyewitness News" with Lori Stokes, Steve Bartelstein, Bill Evans and Janibe Abreu takes first place in both the 5am and 6am news races, delivering a 2.0 rating/11 share and a 3.8 rating/15 share, respectively. Both editions of "Eyewitness News" show growth over last November's ratings, with the 5am gaining 11% and the 6am gaining 12%. WNBC-TV's "Today NY 1" at 5am and "Today NY 2" at 6am are the only newscasts in their respective time periods to experience rating and share declines.
* Fastest Growing Midday Newscast - "Eyewitness News At Noon" with Steve Bartelstein and Sade Baderinwa grows its Nov'03 audience to a 5.1 rating/16 share, up 11% in rating and 14% in share from Nov'02. More impressively, "Eyewitness News" is the only midday newscast to gain one full rating and three share points since the start of the new broadcast season in Oct'03.
* Top-rated Network Morning News/Information Program and 17% Share Growth
- "Good Morning America" continues to win in the M-F 7-9am time period. Up 2 share points since Nov'02, "GMA's" 4.7 rating/14 share puts it comfortably ahead of "The Today Show" and all other news and information programs in its time period. "The Today Show" is down 24% in rating and 20% in share from last November.
* Top-rated Network News at 6:30pm - "ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" wins the network news race with a 7.1 rating/12 share. Its 12 share of audience is double that of the "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" and 20% higher than the declining "NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw" share.
* Top-rated Early Fringe Program and 8% Share Growth - "Oprah Winfrey" is the time period winner at 4pm, notching a 5.6 rating/13 share and increasing its share by 1 point over its year-ago performance.
* Top-rated Morning Program - "Live! With Regis and Kelly" posts a 4.7 rating/16 share and remains the highest-rated program of any airing weekdays between 9am and 12pm. "Live!" beats the combined deliveries of competing 9am programs on WCBS-TV and WNBC-TV.
* Top-rated Access Programs - "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" on ABC/7 continue to dominate in prime access, respectively delivering a 10.1 rating/16 share and a 10.9 rating/17 share.
* Top-rated New Syndicated Program - "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" with Meredith Viera is the only new syndicated program to win its time period. "Millionaire" delivers a 5.1 rating/16 share and increases WABC-TV's rating and share performance in the time period by 47% and 50%, respectively.

WNBC sees 13% drop from 2002 sweeps
With one day remaining in the November sweeps, WABC was poinsed to pull off a rare trifecta in the Gotham news market.
ABC O&O has the 5 and 6 p.m. races locked up, but 11 p.m. could come down to a photo finish. (Final results were delayed because of the Thanksgiving holiday.)
Through Tuesday, the Alphabet was leading with a 7.9 household rating/14 to WNBC's 7.8/14, with WABC up 14% from last year and WNBC off 9%. WCBS stands third with a 6.2/11.
The 11 p.m. news race isn't the only place where the Peacock station is suffering. Total-day, WNBC has been hardest hit, with a drop of 13% from last year's November sweep period (4.8 to 4.2). WABC saw a 2% dip, but still will finish first among local stations with a 4.5. WCBS (3.8), Tribune's WPIX (3.3) and Fox station WNYW (2.3) rounded out the top five.
In the morning races, WABC also led at 5, 6 and 7. Win at 7 a.m. marks the end of the "Today" show streak -- which dates back 34 consecutive sweeps. "Good Morning America" now rules the early-ayem roost with a 4.7/14 (up 7%). "Today" declined 24% to 5.4.
Strong increases also were registered by CBS' "The Early Show" (1.4/4, up 27%) and "WB11 Morning News" (2.2/7, up 16%).
In daytime, "Oprah" continued to dominate with a 5.6/13, up 4% from last year. WABC's "Live With Regis & Kelly" maintained its first-place position (4.7/16) at 9 a.m., despite dropping 14% from last year. Rookie strip "Living It Up With Ali & Jack" notched sixth place for WCBS with a 1.2/4. Score is down 39% from the strip it replaced, "Martha Stewart Living."
At 10, WPIX's "Maury" (3.6) held it own against still-emerging talker "Ellen" (3.3) on WNBC.
In access, WABC's gamers "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" handily won their slots with 10.2/17 and 11.0/17, respectively. WNYW's broadcast of "The Simpsons" ran second (4.8/8).
