MANDY MOORE REFUSED TO BE COMPARED WITH MARIAH
http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/45/002_3481.jpg
On an exclusive video clip shown today in Startalk, a Philippine-showbiz talkshow, the 19-year old singer Mandy Moore politely refused to be compared with the legendary Mariah Carey, during a press conference, since the two hot American stars were both here in the country for a separate one-night concert.

Moore, who staged a concert at Araneta Colisuem last November 21, said that her music cannot be compared at all to Mariah whose career is already a decade now.

"She`s an artist with such an immense career and she`s a very talented person. I can`t really compare myself to her... I can`t. I`m actually a fan. That`s it.", she added.

IMO, I think Mandy could be the next Mariah if her career keeps going strong. Hit albums, even better movies, hmm. Makes you wonder.

I like Mandy, but her albums haven't really done as well as Mariah's. Well, I'm not sure about the sales of the first two, but I know her third didn't do all that great. I think her third is the best, though.

Yeah, but Mariah's latest albums haven't done well. So maybe Mandy can pull an opposite of Mariah and have good album sales in the future.

And as for the whole albums thing, well Mandy has only been around for 3 or 4 years. Mariah's been around for what, over a decade? Give it time, I suppose.

That was a very kind thing Mandy said about Mariah.

It's refreshing to see at least one pop star who actually has something nice to say about a fellow singer.

News Info On Mandy

-- Mandy Moore is visiting the Philippines and was asked the following question in a local interview;

Q: Mariah Carey just had a concert here. How would you compare your music to hers? Would you say you are more popular than Mariah because you are successful also in the movies?

A: Gosh! I look up to her. I'm ashamed to even think of comparing my music to Mariah's. She's way up there. Nobody can claim that I'm bigger than she is. She has been in the music scene longer than I have and she's got my respect and admiration.

:D I like Mandy she's so sweet.

"From the files of The National Enquirer: The Mariah Carey Story."

AMI Books is gearing up to launch a compiler entitled "From the files of The National Enquirer: The Mariah Carey Story." The book, which will be released sometime next month, can be pre-ordered online for only $5.99 at amazon.com.

The release comes as part of a series of books being distributed this winter, whose subjects, in addition to Mariah, include entertainers Whitney Houston, Diana Ross and Lisa Marie Presley, and television programs American Idol and Friends.

The content of the publication is yet unknown but is expected to include quotes from Mariah and those close to her, as well as information and articles originally printed in past issues of The National Enquirer. The book is also tentatively scheduled to include a series of photographs for your enjoyment, although it is presently unknown if they will be printed in color or in grayscale.

Regardless, the book should be a nice addition to any Mariah fan’s memorabilia collection.

Not to open up a whole other can of worms about Miss Carey, and please don't think i'm trying to start something like certain others who have posted on this thread, but I've heard some rumors that she has already gone under the knife to give the ahem, "girls" a little enhancement.

Sharon Osbourne once referred to Mariah' assets as "the best boob job in showbiz."
Now I do not know if that is true, but I have always thought she became a little more "top heavy" when you compare her to her early years when she was with Tommy Mattola.

Any thoughts?

MonarC

I have heard interviews ask Mariah about that and she says she hasn't had surgery. She uses push up bras, and she did gain weight after her "breakdown" and got kinda chunky and that does make your boobs get bigger. I have seen pics of her boobs in her 2004 Calendar and she is exposing underneath her breasts when they make the incesion to give a "boob job" and there is nothing there no scars or anything. So I don't think she had anything done. :)

Mariah Carey has been busy writing songs for her new album while on her successful Charmbracelet World Tour. When asked about the new material, Mariah was reluctant to give away many specifics, but did mention the following.

"Ever since my dads passing I`ve been trying to kind of put together some missing pieces of my childhood....deal with the negative stuff, remember the positives. It`s been an ongoing healing process and I think it will tell a nice story through my music."

Charmbracelet did better than Glitter, but Mariah Carey and her fans are hoping for a big hit that will put her back at the top of the music world. Mariah thinks she has narrowed down an album title to what will most likely be the laughing stock of her critics. On the new album in question Mariah states,

"Candyland was always one of my favorite games growing up. I remember playing it with my family, and I think the title has a symbollic meaning as well...with all of the different colors and so forth. It also represents like, my dreams of growing up and making something of myself."

Mariah's "You Give Me Butterflies" charity boots

Mariah Carey put her heart and soul into hand decorating UGG Australia boots for charity. The auction benefits Oceana, an organization created with the sole purpose of protecting the world’s oceans, and The Michael J. Mariah's "You Give Me Butterflies" UGG Australia boots, which are currently on display at Nordstrom Clothing on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, were personally designed by the singing star, who has signed each boot in black sharpie pen. These "Ultra Tall" sand colored boots are a women's size 9 and are accompanied by a beautiful 8x10 color photograph of Carey. Have you ever wondered how many gossips and rumors an artist such as Mariah has had to face during her life?. Mariah Carey has been seriously attacked by media, in some cases, rumors have been negative for her career.

In the begining of her career, Mariah was criticized because she married Thomas Mottola, president of Columbia Records at that moment. Some foreign press affirmed that Mariah was the reason why Mottola and his ex-wife broke up. What many people who have read this story don't know, is that Mottola divorced in 1987, he met Mariah in 1989, and he married her in 1993. This marriage came with other gossip, press said that Mariah was so successful because she had all the support because she was married to the president of Sony Music, and that he only paid attention to his young wife. These rumors were fading when Mariah Carey divorced and her albums were still selling millions.

In addition, Mariah was seriously attacked in 1999, when some media published a Mariah Carey saying that she would love to be as skinny as those children in poor areas of Africa, but without all the flies. This gossip was too hard, and a few weeks after the nonsense article, people knew the truth...the article was false.

Other many gossip have been spreading through the years. For example, in 1999 Mariah married Mexican singer Luis Miguel. A few months ago I was watching TV and the reporter said: "Did you know that some icons do some weird things. For example, did you know that Mariah Carey doesn't use stairs, she is a diva and she always asks her body guards for help" In 2001 Mariah said bad things about Mottola's new wife, and many other gossips and lies.

However, the hardest gossips came out in 2001, when media affirmed that Mariah tried to suicide because she realized that her single "Loverboy" was not doing so well, and that Luis Miguel was not part of her life anymore. During 2001, press also said that Mariah was alcoholic, she used drugs, and that she was getting crazy. These are the hardest gossip in her career because a painful lie is always uncomfortable and sad.

There are hundreds of rumors and gossips, some of them are just silly; other ones are evil and they can really affect anyone. When we hear another silly story; let's not repeat it, that's how everything starts, and let's not forget Mariah Carey is someone who feels and who can gets hurt easily, she is a sensitive human being not a cartoon without feelings such as Mickey Mouse; So don't believe everything you hear.

What Does Mariah Plan for 2004?

According to Lionel Cole, the co-writer of "Through The Rain" and Mariah Carey`s piano player for the Charmbracelet tour, Mariah will not be releasing an album in 2004. He said it`s impossible to release a new album next year due to Mariah§s future commitments after the world tour.

He added that it is more likely that a new album will be released in 2005. He said that in January, Mariah will begin rehearsals for the London stage adaptation of the comedy "The Sleeping Prince."

Then there are still plans for a new movie, called "Sweet Science." Mariah is also looking forward to releasing her "Charmbracelet" world tour on DVD. However, Universal France has not confirmed that it would be released.

There's no denying Mariah Carey has great talent!

Mariah Carey has one of the great voices in popular music. Her seven-octave range and dramatic vocal delivery make her performances, either live or on recordings, powerful and bracing.

That incredible voice has allowed the R&B diva to sustain a career for more than a decade. But now she's in a slump. Her last two CDs, "Charmbracelet" and "The Remixes," were critical and commercial failures. Her semi-autobiographical movie debut, "Glitter," was a flop, as was the soundtrack. EMI paid her $28 million to get her off the label. And she suffered a nervous breakdown in 2001.

The only bright spot in her recent career has been in the disco/dance charts, where she's had 13 No. 1 singles in a row. But the brain-numbing thump-thump-thump of disco is seldom heard outside the club culture. And a No. 1 in disco doesn't mean much in sales; the honor comes mostly from DJ spins.

The knock on Carey has always been that she's all sheen and no substance. She can belt lyrics with amazing energy and unique vocal phrasing, but there's seldom any emotion behind it. She seems more interested in showing off her voice than making a song work, making it mean something.

Carey has yet to find a song equal to her talent. She prefers vapid hip-hop and rap, such as the dreck on the two-disc "Remixes" album. That album alone shows that she has talent but no taste. None of the songs on it will have any shelf life.

Her love of style over substance will probably be writ large at her show. You can bet there will be too many costume changes, too much stage business, and too many dance routines that will look like every other dance routine. Count on a slick session band and talented backup singers who will fill in her vocals while she does her dance moves.

This will be Carey's first show in Seattle, so you can also be sure that those fans who have waited a decade to see her will go wild, no matter what she does. She'll arrive and leave to standing ovations; that's a given. But the talk afterward will likely be about her clothes and the opulent production, rather than the music.

Shania and Mariah: just how hot are they? Read on as we take their respective diva temperature readings.

Sales: Twain`s 19-million-selling "Come on Over" holds the record for the top album in the United States by a female artist. But Carey`s total worldwide album sales are a whopping 150 million, to about 50 million for Twain. The newest material by either has sold comparatively poorly, but Twain`s "Up!" followed an unprecedented hit, and Carey`s "Charmbracelet" counts as a rebound from the 2001 dud "Glitter."

- - > Shania -- four flames (career), three flames (current)

- - > Mariah -- five flames (career), two flames (current)

Awards: Let`s stick to the big ones in which they`ve both been nominated. Carey has two Grammy Awards and eight American Music Awards; Twain has five Grammys and six AMA trophies. Grammys trump.

- - > Shania -- four flames

- - > Mariah -- two flames

Voice: Twain`s singing is an effective part of her overall package as an entertainer and she sounds more at ease than ever vocally on "Up!" But Carey is a natural wonder who has imprinted her style on a generation of pop and R&B followers. Her main weakness is that with a voice of such extravagant capability, she too seldom knows when to leave well enough alone.

- - > Shania -- two flames

- - > Mariah -- four flames

Critical reputation: Frankly, the media isn`t an especially hot spot for either. But Twain`s detractors tend to view her as a charming, if calculating, trifle. Despite (and sometimes because of) her big voice, Carey tends to raise hackles, and then out come the rhetorical knives.

- - > Shania -- two flames

- - > Mariah -- one flame

Performance: Well, do you like drama or are you just out for a good time? Do you want singers to pour out their souls onstage for you or should they be too busy getting you up and into it? Carey and her music aren`t strangers to fun, but she`s selling emotion. Twain`s relentlessly upbeat stage manner is a high-efficiency way to send the customer home happy.

- - > Shania -- three flames

- - > Mariah -- two flames

Stage productions: Twain downplays the whiz-bang technical aspects of her concerts, but her frame of reference must be Siegfried & Roy. Sure, she doesn`t go for the huge, goofy moving sets as some arena acts do, but there`ll be fireworks, flashpots, confetti cannons, big-screen video and as much sonic augmentation as the speakers will hold. Carey is playing smaller halls on this tour but reportedly is laying on the full-size glitz, with 11 dancers, vibrant sets, lots of costume changes, puppetry -- even onstage portraiture (by a clown, no less).

- - > Shania -- four flames

- - > Mariah -- four flames

Babeosity: It`s a slugfest of bare midriffs, low-cut tops and come-hither poses! Uh, oh -- and girl-next-door perkiness! It`s hard to deny (though Twain tries) that fabulous looks played a big part in establishing the immense popularity of these stars. And while both seem to enjoy playing dress-up and using what they`ve got, neither one goes all Kylie Minogue with it. In fact, we`ll give the edge to Twain mostly because she has the confidence not to work the babe angle as hard as Carey does.

MARIAH'S PLANS FOR 2004

http://www.mcarchives.com/news/images/mariah.jpg

Three days ago, I had the news that Mariah's new album will be called Candyland. In Entertainment Weekly, Mariah supposedly said: "Candyland was always one of my favorite games growing up. I remember playing it with my family, and I think the title has a symbollic meaning as well, with all of the different colors and so forth. It also represents like, my dreams of growing up and making something of myself."
Many fans thought this name was to girlish. Well, I can assure you. The above article from Entertainment Weekly was fabricated by a so-called fan (I don't think someone who fabricates stories and tell lies is a fan). Mariah has no intention releasing a new album in the near future, let alone that she already came up with an album title. According to Lionel Cole, the co-writer of Through The Rain and Mariah's piano player for the Charmbracelet tour, it is impossible to release a new album next year due to Mariah's future commitments after the world tour. He added that it is more likely that a new album will be released in 2005.
Then, what are Mariah's plans for 2004? In January, Mariah will begin rehearsals for the London stage adaptation of the comedy The Sleeping Prince. The Terrence Rattigan play is best known for its 1957 screen interpretation, The Prince And The Showgirl, which starred Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe. And there are still plans for a new movie, called Sweet Science. Fans may look forward to the release of the Charmbracelet world tour on DVD, even though Universal France said that they never confirmed the release of this DVD, they only confirmed the shooting of the concert in Paris. Universal France don't know when it could be released, if it will be released.

yeah her house is amazing!!!

AMPUTEE, 16, OPENS CONCERT FOR MARIAH
http://www.mcarchives.com/fotos1/foto690.jpg

A 16-year-old girl who had her left leg amputated six weeks ago has opened a concert for Mariah Carey. Carey invited her to open the concert at the Arlington Theatre, Santa Barbara, California, after hearing about her wish to sing in a recording studio.
Becca Solodon, whose leg was amputated because of a life-threatening tumour, sang Lifehouse's Simon. Her parents, brother, grandmother and classmates were in the audience and she met Carey backstage afterwards. Becca, who lives in Santa Barbara, was introduced to Carey by Damion Young, a songwriter who has written songs for the star.
Young told Rolling Stone: "I started telling Mariah that I met this little girl that changed my life. I said that Becca made me realise why we do all this, because her only dream was to spend one day in the studio. And she was like: 'I'm on tour, what can we do?' I said: 'Santa Barbara' and she said: 'Perfect. Opening act. Set it up. Bye.' "

DIVA DUET?
http://www.mariah-charts.com/caps/Jpgs/totp-boy188.jpg
Mariah Carey
http://www.mcarchives.com/fotos1/foto738.jpg
Jennifer Lopez

Have longtime rivals Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez found a studio big enough for the two of them? New York's two favorite divas have been hissing at each other for years. Back in 2001, Lopez, who was signed to Sony Music by Carey's ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, was said to have angered Carey by slapping a sample by Japan's Yellow Magic Orchestra on her song "Be Real", when she heard Carey wanted to use it.
When an interviewer mentioned to Carey that she'd met Lopez, Carey sniped, "I bet that was really intellectually stimulating." Asked about Lopez's claim that she gets eight hours of sleep a night, Carey remarked, "If I had the luxury of not actually having to sing my own songs, I'd do that, too."
Now, a well-placed source tells us, "Mariah wants to bury the hatchet. She wants Jennifer to do a duet." Officially, reps for both deny a recording rapprochement is in the works. "It sounds like a nice idea," says a spokeswoman for Carey, whose career is now being guided by Lopez's former manager, Benny Medina. "But there's no truth to it."
A source close to Lopez says, "I don't know how Jennifer would benefit from working with Mariah." Whether or not Lopez is ready to make music with Carey, execs are said to be trying to light a fire under her beautiful booty.
"They've reserved studio time," an insider tells us. "They'd like her to have a single out by the spring and an album out in the summer. Now that BMG and Sony are merging, every exec is hustling for a big hit so he can keep his job."
Lopez, who records for Sony's Epic label, sold a respectable 2.5 million copies of her last CD, "This Is Me ... Then". But sources say she's in no mood to be rushed. "She's been talking about renegotiating her contract," says another source. "When you're a star as big as she is, you set your own pace."
Still another source said, "Jennifer wants to wants to get back in the studio, but she's not willing to do so until there's a new deal in place. Given how the record business is now, her position isn't being well-received." A Lopez rep was unavailable for comment and an Epic spokeswoman didn't return a call.

Janet Jackson says Mariah is "down to earth"

http://imagecache2.allposters.com/images/137/039_B71371.jpg

R&B/Dance artist Janet Jackson insists that Mariah Carey is not the person she portrays in the limelight – a diva. The superstar told Music Beat that Carey is "down to earth".

Jackson - whose new album is set to drop in March – states, "I have met [Carey] before and she's really cool and so funny. Everyone has been given the wrong impression of her, and maybe it is her doing.

"But you have to remember that celebrities are always in the spotlight and are sometimes forced to conduct them selves in a different way than they normally do. That’s how it is in the business. I have met artists who are real divas, but Mariah Carey is not one of them. She is a very sweet person, and what nobody sees off camera is the real person she is on the inside."

Janel Spiegel is creating a birthday book for Mariah and here is what she has to say about it.

I was given the ok from MonarC to send Mariah a 2004 Birthday Book. We are creating a book for Mariah's birthday. I have made her several books before and it was awesome to see how many lambs were a part of the project(s) so it would be cool to have everyone be a part of the new 2004 book.
For Mariah's book, send in all birthday messages and they will be printed out and enclosed in the "Mariah's 2004 Butterfly World/Lambs Birthday Book". If anyone has any cover art ideas, they would be appreciated (you will recieve full credit).
Some ideas on what to do. Send her a birthday/anniversary wish, pictures, a website page of your site (one page please), a poem, how Mariah has inspired you, your favorite song and why, what you loved about the Charmbracelet tour, anything you want to say. Pages are unlimited and thank you much everyone for taking part.

Send all messages, greeting pictures to "Mariah's 2004 Birthday Book", c/o Janel Spiegel, 1625 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, PA 19602, USA. Or via email to JanelSpiegel@aol.com. Due Date is March 20th, 2004. It will be sent to MonarC and given to Mariah.
A half-poster sized card will be added and sent along with the book. To be a part of this or include a picture please add that along with your Birthday message. To be a part of the card please include your name and where you are from. This information will be put in the card. Your birthday messages will be put into the "2004 Mariah Birthday Book".
A half-poster sized card featuring "Mariah" events from 2004 will be made. If you would like to be a part of the card only and do not wish to be a part of the "Birthday Book" please put as your subject line "Mariah's 2004 Birthday Card".

Wise Girls: Little gem waiting to be discovered

Let's get straight to the point: can Mariah Carey act? Well, not that you'd ever have guessed it from the on-screen abortion that was "Glitter", but yes she can.

Supporting Oscar-winning Mira Sorvino is quite a tall order, but as tough-talkin' Italian-American waitress Raychel in "Wise Girls", she is charming, charismatic, indeed a born star.

Shame this highly watchable, if flawed comedy/thriller, went straight to cable in the "Glitter" aftermath, as there's great performances in this tale of three New Jersey waitresses who get caught over their heads in mob business.

Even if the sudden switches from all-girls-together comedy to blood-drencehd mafia thriller often jolt, this is a little gem waiting to be discovered.

Was the “Glitter” soundtrack really that big of a commercial failure?

Although the “Glitter” soundtrack failed to live up to the mega success of past Mariah efforts, the concept album did achieve global success on a respective level. The soundtrack has been certified platinum in America (as of January 14th, 2004, it had sold 590,050 in the United States alone, and over two million copies internationally). The album hit No. 1 on the Billboard Soundtrack chart, and was No. 1 in Brazil, Greece, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and entered the Top 10 in Spain, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and the United States. “Glitter” was also the No. 1 selling album in Japan, where it became the first international soundtrack to achieve a No. 1 status. The album also produced the best-selling single of 2001 in the United States -- “Loverboy” –- which also hit No. 1 in Japan and on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales, and Hot 100 Singles Sales.

THE TOP FEMALE ARTIST

1. Who has more influence on today's artists? Mariah Carey wins. Mariah has been said by many artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Destiny's Child star Beyonce Knowles, Jessica Simpson and Christina Aguilera, which you can see Mariahs singing is more influential shown through other artists singing. Mariahs hip/hop has set the stage for other artists like Beyonce / J.Lo / Christina and anyone else who does the "singer/rapper" songs...because Mariah started it with "ODB on fantasy", which started it all. She is also one of the first to ever do a Remix...which by the way was a success when she did it 11 years ago with her hit Dreamlover. Look it up. It says that that song was one of the first, and she was the first female artist to do a remix. So her making remixes is more influential.

2. Who has sold more albums? Mariah definitely wins again. She has sold more than 180 million albums worldwide. In albums and singles if not more. Although Whitneys album which was a soundtrack Bodyguard is one of the biggest selling albums. Mariah has had 2 big selling albums, which are Music Box selling over 28 million worldwide and Daydream selling over 25 million world wide. Now that is incredible to have 2 albums that big of selling, not to mention Mariahs Christmas album is one of the best selling albums ever as well! Selling over 14 million albums worldwide. Umm and Im sure Whitney Houstons new Christmas album hasn't sold past 500k....

3. Who has better vocals range? Definitely not Whitney. Mariahs voice is more versatile

4. Who is more involved with their music? Definitely Mariah wins again. She writes/produces all her songs and music, as well as directing her videos! She is more involved with her music, from the beginning process of writing until the very ending process of how the video of the singles are to be. Mariah is just more involved. And does this BETTER

5. More number 1 singles? Mariah! Yup she's had 15! Number one singles, not sure how many Whitney has but definitely not more than 12.

6. Longer #1 hit singles? Mariah! One Sweet Day holds the record for 16 incredible consecutive weeks, and has surpassed the Beatles with 70 weeks altogether at number 1 for her songs! Most incredible. Her first 5 singles all went to #1 consecutively. (record)

7. Better international artist? Definitely Mariah! In Japan 3 out of the 5 best selling albums belong to Mariah. Yup heard that right 3 out of 5 she is the best selling international artist in Australia as well. She has had countless number of #1 hit singles in many countries worldwide. The people of China have recently voted her their favorite international female artist. Mariah is featured on the cover of the latest edition of the Chinese magazine, Crazy English Reader. The readers of the publication participated in an online poll, which asked who the best international diva was. 77% of the readers voted Mariah as their favorite diva. Whitney Houston and Celine Dion only received 23% combined; She is just an all around better and more successful international artist. 8. Mariah wins...she is just a better artist."

Setting the record straight!

CAREY ON STARVING

In a 1996 interview, Mariah Carey said the following: "When I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean, I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff." Status: false.

After a satirical Mariah Carey "interview" appeared on the Internet in a web publication called Cupcake in early 1996, the damaging sentence cited above was lifted from it quoted in VOX magazine (a British culture/movie/music publication), from which the British newspaper The Independent picked up the story in May. The quote spread like wildfire on Internet newsgroups beginning in June, and by August the quote was being reprinted (without question or verification) by dozens of newspapers and magazines throughout the world (including Ms. magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle's usually reliable columnist Herb Caen). The quote was frequently attributed by news reports as having been uttered by Ms. Carey in an interview with the UK's Radio 1 (as reprinted in the British publication The Face, a style/fashion magazine) or on the World Entertainment News Network, and although debunkings of the story appeared in print as early as July, the fictitious quote was still being spread as true by the media into September.

Ordinarily such obviously satirical material doesn't gain such widespread currency, but sometimes it does when it strikes a particularly resonant chord with the public, as this quote did - perhaps because it embodied widespread perceptions of the insensitivity of thin people towards the non-thin, and the callous attitude of the wealthy towards the poverty-stricken. If either if these were the main point that caused the legend to be so easily believed and spread, however, the subject of the rumor would most likely have been someone such as ultra-thin model Kate Moss or wealthy and stylish Marla Maples Trump, not Mariah Carey. The association of this quotation with Carey would seem to be another instance of the "celebrity is not what he/she appears to be" legend type, a weapon usually launched at people who, in the public's perception, have come to fame and fortune in too facile a manner. (Other victims of this type of rumor include children's radio host Uncle Don and another pop singer, John Denver.)

Mariah Carey is regarded by some as an unsophisticated "pop diva" with the pretty face and figure who has achieved massive success by appealing to the lowest common denominator in musical taste and cranking out empty, soulless Top 40 single after single about "fulfilling dreams through hard work and perseverance." (Her chart success, some claim, also had to do with the machinations of her husband, who was the head of the record label for which she recorded.) A news item portraying her as uncaring and self-indulgent (and none too bright) was therefore one many people were all too readily willing to pass along unquestioningly.

Carey has actually engaged in a number of philanthropic efforts, including performing benefit concerts to raise money for Camp Mariah, a camp for impoverished city youths in Fishkill, N.Y.

here is an update for the few Mariah fans here. ;)

MARIAH RECORDING NEAR THE BAHAMAS

I'm in Minneapolis right now attending a Music Educator's Conference and I just came back from a session with Jimmy Jam. He gave a session on popular music and its place in schools' music programs. After the talk, we were able to go up to him, so I got his autograph and asked him if he was working with Mariah yet on her new album?

He laughed and said, "Actually, Mariah is in Anguilla right now, near the Bahamas, recording some stuff for her new album. I'm supposed to be there, but I had to be here, so one of our partners is working with her at the moment until we can get there."
