How many horse's played Mr. Ed? I read quite a few. I also read the original Mr.Ed died in 1969 and is buried in Calif.. But the horse that everyone thought was the original, but was just a double died in the 70's in Oklahoma. I have noticed on some publicity photos the horses are different.

To my knowledge, just one horse played Mister Ed, Bamboo Harvester is the only name I've heard. He died in 1970, which was not big news at the time. In 1979, the horse that did publicity shots as Mister Ed died, and everyone thought he was Ed from the TV show. I also heard that in an episode where Wilbur gets another horse to make Mister Ed jealous, that it's the same horse from the publicity photos. And Allan Lane, the voice of Mister Ed died in 1973 of cancer.

I read that in the beginning, Allan Lane was too embarrassed about playing a horse's voice. Once the show took off, he said they could put his name in the credits, but they liked the idea of having Mister Ed playing "Himself".

His voice was perfect for Mr. Ed.

Rocky Lane's voice was perfect for Mister Ed. I wonder if he had to alter it in any way?
I imagine he recorded his lines in a studio. I wonder how the process worked with Alan Young and the dialog between him and Mister Ed.
It's so amazing. When I'm watching the show, I never think that Ed is a normal horse. He even had great mannerisms. I always feel that he can 'think'.

Imagine if you would have met Mr. Ed. You would have said, "Hi Mr. Ed! I've been a big fan of yours for a log time!" Then what? You would think to ask for his autograph, and you would be half expecting him to pop off with some typical Mr. Ed wise crack. ;)
