View Full Version : Board Trends - Part Deux
dlemond 11-21-2003, 01:38 PM Last time I posted this topic was in February 2003.
Here are seven trends since then:
1. If I Can't Have My Signature I'm Gone:
Gee, everybody was going nuts over the removal of signatures. TJ flipflopped to try and please people when it was never really a big deal to anyone who posted with the notion of having something to say. MY SIGNATURE DEFINES ME was the cry and some people left and some threatened to leave and some came back. The lot of you should have just gone away, you acted like 5 year olds.
2. Chit Chat - The Crisis and the Conservative - Liberal War
First there was the non-stop fighting almost resulting in the end of chit-chat. Then came the random post board to satisfy those who like to see threads with hundreds of pages. And of course there also came the Politics/Current Events Board - which might as well be labled "I'm not in front of you, so I'll say anything I want Board." Never has heated discussion reached such Kelvin proportions as liberals and conservatives, Michael Moore lovers and machine gun humpers, God lovers and agnostics, all go toe to toe with each other on a daily basis. Everyone is fearless at this board and never has anyone pissed off another more than here (I'm guilty of my own transgressions here too ;)).
When the heat dies down people pretend they are all friends but that is a load of crap.
3. Nancy McKeon
This trend lives and seems to be immortal. What is the fascination with her? Here are my last comments- "absolute bizarre fascination with this actress, role model(?) and champion of Lifetime (a channel I've yet to locate on my cable box"
Umm, ditto.
4. Post counters
Look at me click! I made a post!
Another outcry when TJ removed the post totals from beneath your name. Blasphemy, cried the people who threatened to leave with the signature removal. But alas, the post totals remain and people seem obsessed with quantity over quality. Can't wait for the "Post A Number" thread - forget random posts, might as well have Deliberate Post Total board.
5. John Ritter Love and Celebrity Deaths
John Ritter just might be the King of Sitcoms, an all around good actor and person and the embodiment of sitcom fun. And never was such attention deserved as with his passing. The boards exploded after his death and Ritter avatars and signatures were to be found everywhere.
Besides John there were many, many tv star/celebrity deaths, too many to even name them all. Johhny Cash, Charles Bronson, Robert Stack, Gregory Peck, Fred Berry, Gordon Jump, Bob Hope, Warren Zevon...you get the idea.
Bizzare and sad.
6. Aliases and Bannings
As of late there have been many people snagged for using more than one screen name. Some even saying as much in their posts when knowing full well that is not allowed or tolerated.
And also lately I have noticed that there is a bunch of people who have admitted they have been banned before- some 2 or 3 times! Hey, even I got a warning, but banned 3 times? Funny thing is, these posters are still going out on the offensive and even attacking TJ verbally. What is wrong with you people?
Oh, and by the way, I'm Dorothy.
7. The Wisdom of Solomon
Granted he is no Nate, but he is still recieving the kind of the bashing that the late great toejam K-Mart crossdresser once inspired. Whether it be the women are not good enough stuff, the Good Times is not a spinoff rant, or the I root against your team stance, Solomon is sure to bring about a post from the faithful.
And you know you might as well post, your post total is lacking and by the way your signature really sucks.
;)

I think you missed my point- I have been here, it was in February that I last posted a thread about board trends:

I like your signature, check out #4 on my current list.

That was a BS trend. So many people that I found annoying said they were going to leave, but they ALL came back. People don't know how to keep promises. :nonono:

Actually, the Nancy obsessing pahse is practically over. Amost no one likes her anymore. The only fans she has now are the dozen or so people that post at the Division board. Thank God though, because frankly, I was getting sick of all the "I'm gunna kick ur ass for dissin mah idol" and "Nancy Rulz the planet" and "If I was hanging from a cliff and someone said that I had to call Nancy a bitch or else they wouldn't save me, I wouldn't do it. I rather have died because if I said it, she would mad and would think it was all my fault" and other lame ass threats by the Nancy cult.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 11-21-2003, 03:11 PM  That's great
pandora_spocks 11-21-2003, 03:15 PM That was great, dlemond. Number 4 and 6 are hilarious.
I'll admit I was apart of #1, but I could careless about sigs now. If I want to look at Elizabeth I'll go to my own board because I have a whole theme and pic in my sig dedicated to her on there. :D So the whole siggy thing for me on here I could really careless about.

You should either let us have our avatars bigger, like some of the pics we had in our siggie, or bring siggies back cuz that is what everyone wants!
Annoying Person #3
Yeah, well, I'm out as well.
It's a shame that the **** hit the fan, cuz this was such a great place to hang out.

Well this is very sad. I dunno. I am not going to say whether I am going to quit posting here or not, because I may change my mind. If I new the siggy's were gonna be taken away, I would have tried to scrape up some money to send. I am certainly not going to bother doing that now, because siggy's were one of the best parts of sitcoms online. Sorry...

TJ I'll be you humble sex slave forever if you give us back our signatures. notworthy:
Sounds more like a punishment than a reward.
And yet, all of these people still post here. Why are you still around? Pictures still aren't allowed in signatures. :crying:

MandieR1980 11-21-2003, 06:18 PM I never saw any Nancy McKeon craze on here just us devoted fans. Like Pandora is a devoted fan of Elizabeth's I'm a devoted fan of Nancy McKeon's. I've been a fan of Nancy's since I was a little girl way before the AOL and internet thing happened. Infact I used to have a fan website but I didn't have much time to update it so I had to close it down.

OK, I like Nancy now as much as ever, but even I can admit that there was a huge craze of "Nancy Rox!" and "Nancy....if you're reading this...". Yeah, ok, so I was a part of it, but that's besides the point...:D
Great list, by the way! I think you've just about covered it!

Actually I think it wasn't so much people were complaining (I hardly saw any) I think it was that everybody was so used to seeing it there and had trouble adjusting to the change because it was missing.
Janice 11-21-2003, 07:46 PM Very comprehensive list -- most everyone got their fair share of insults.

That might have been one of the reasons, but getting rid of post counts in threads doesn't seem like that big of a change to me. They're just a number by your username and who really cares how high or low it is. I liked the idea of post counts not being displayed, but I didn't like that fact that people were complaining and asking where they went.

I didn't think I was directly insulting anyone.
I was just calling it as I saw it.
Do you think I was being mean?
Good list - but that doesn't even cover half the stuff that goes on with day to day operations. :)
Expect some changes when vbulletin3 comes along, it will be much easier to change things then.

Hey TJ, what do you think of that board theme idea I suggested to you in email? http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/attachment.php?postid=1307754

What changes would those be or do you not want to comment?
I may do a Christmas theme, you might see a return of the on/off Christmas lights replacing the tv sets for December.
I won't comment on any potential changes right now, I will have to wait and see the final product.

ericidlefan's signature drives me crazy. Every day I log in and see "10 posts with many more to go!" with the number changing daily.
I just dont get the whole post thing and why it's so important to keep upping that post total AND putting it in a sig line. I just dont get it.

Ah, okay. Is it possible to make multiple board themes for vbulletin? For example, if I wanted a Bewitched theme on here I could pick 'Bewitched' from a drop down menu in my control panel. And lets say if Sarah wanted I don't know a 'Christina Aguilera' theme. She would be able to go her control panel and choose that as her board theme. Is that possible on this kind of board? I know you can do it for other message boards. I'm just curious about this one. Sorry, for all the questions. If you need a better example I can show you what I mean.
Yes, that's how I do it now - with multiple styles to have different logos and photos on every board. It's not selectable though for the members.

dear lord I remember that Nancy craze. I wasn't one of the extremists, but I was pretty obsessed...
OK!! FINE! I ADMIT IT! I recorded eps of FOL onto cassette tapes and listened to them while going to bed. But still...that isn't TOO extreme...right?
I'm better now y'all...(God this living in Hickville has really caught up to me) I only tape The Division and besides that...really, I'm over the Nancy craze...
Oh, and I would call her a bitch to get saved ;)

Oh that's it chris! you're gonna get it. i'm gunna kick ur ass for dissin mah idol. nancy rulz the planet, duh! and i would never, ever, call nancy a bitch, even if it was a life and death situation. :p
I'm still here though...obsessed more than ever.
i remember last summer, when EVERYONE had pictures from quizzes in their siggies. "i'm slater from saved by the bell. which saved by the bell character are you?" "i'm complicated by avril lavigne. which avril song are you?..." them good ol' days.
