View Full Version : Has anyone ever been to Nantucket? peter may 11-17-2003, 05:25 PM Where abouts is it anyway, Is it nice there?:) hojni 11-17-2003, 10:08 PM My wife and I enjoyed Wings so much that we went to Nantucket in 1994. It was a great trip. We flew into Boston, rented a car, drove to Cape Cod, took the ferry over to Martha's Vineway, flew over to Nantucket on Cape Air (the pilot claimed that the plane was the one used for the plane shots on Wings). The real Nantucket airport was kind of like the show set, but a little bigger and nicer. They did have Wings cast pictures on the wall. On the other hand, the Martha's Vineyard airport at the time was a tiny, dumpy, one-room terminal. Actually, much more like the Wings set than the Nantucket airport. On Nantucket, we stayed at the Seven Sea Streen Inn B&B, which had a great view of the ocean and the downtown from it's widow's walk. It was a blast. We later drove up the coast the Bar Harbor, ME. On of the best trips of my life, so far. Krista2882 11-18-2003, 12:26 AM Nope, I've lived here in Connecticut all of my 21 years, and I've never been there even though I'm pretty close! I was even in Cape Cod this past summer, and we didn't get a chance to take the ferry over to Nantucket. :( I really wanted to, though. Next summer, I'm going to make it my goal to go to Nantucket. hehe AngeFaitore 11-18-2003, 11:18 AM Originally posted by hojni My wife and I enjoyed Wings so much that we went to Nantucket in 1994. Well, if you go there again and find the photo of Thomas Haden Church missing... c5guy 11-19-2003, 11:06 PM Originally posted by peter may Where abouts is it anyway, Is it nice there?:) Nantucket Island is 15 - 20 miles south of Cape Cod, about 12 miles east of Martha's Vineyard. The island is about 15 miles long and is shaped sort of like a whale's tale. There is a map of it in the show behind Roy's counter on the wall near the stairs leading to the second floor. I live in Texas and we vacationed in Nantucket, Boston & Newport, Rhode Island Sept - Oct 2002. We travelled there by ferry from Hyannis (Cape Cod). The town of Nantucket, where the ferry docks, is on the north side of the island. It has cobblestone streets which were put in back during the whaling era so that barrels of whale oil unloaded from the ships wouldn't sink in mud. They have a cool whaling museum there. The airport is about 3 - 4 miles SSE from the town, along the south shore. AND TO THIS DAY I COULD KICK MYSELF FOR NOT GOING OVER TO TAKE A LOOK JUST TO SAY I HAD BEEN THERE!!!!!!!!!!! Cool facts I learned about the island while there: Nantucket is the only place in America that has the same name for an island, a town, and a county. During the whaling era, it was the third largest city in Massachusettes (after Boston & Salem), and the largest whaling seaport in the world. The "Club Car" often frequented during the show is a real place & derives its name from an old passenger rail car incorporated into the structure. During the late 1800's a narrow-gauge railway was built connecting the town of Nantucket to Siasconset on the east shore. The railway was dismantled for use during WWI. It was really a charming place with antiquated architecture and beautiful beaches!!! AgtSkye 11-20-2003, 02:54 AM I would love to go there someday. Never been to the east coast period...and I don't have a great interest in visiting NYC at all. Boston, and surroundings I think would be a lot more fun. And something that bothers me is this...people are forever not shutting up about Martha's Vinyard, and the Kennedys and all that, when everything I've ever heard is that Nantucket is a charming place. By the description of the two airports too you'd think Nantucket is loads better than Martha's dumb ol' Vinyard, lol. I also want to visit Prince Edward Island someday. When you're on the west coast of America those two places don't seem that far away from each other, when they actually are very much so. You people on the east coast are so lucky to be there. I think San Francisco has NYC beat tho. :D Anne AngeFaitore 11-20-2003, 07:40 PM Originally posted by AgtSkye Nantucket is loads better than Martha's dumb ol' Vinyard Martha's Vinyard, the decaf island! Krista2882 11-20-2003, 11:26 PM Originally posted by c5guy The "Club Car" often frequented during the show is a real place & derives its name from an old passenger rail car incorporated into the structure. Woa, I am totally going to find it when I go to Nantucket next summer! Krista2882 11-20-2003, 11:34 PM Originally posted by AgtSkye I would love to go there someday. New Hampshire is awesome too, although it's not on the coast. I actually wasn't impressed with Vermont when I was there, though. lol. And I have the opposite opinion as you about Boston and New York City. I LOOOOOOVE New York City! I dont like Boston as much... I haven't been to New York City since the beginning of the spring, and I miss it soooo much! I'll be going there in a couple of weeks for a day though. I can't wait. hehe. and I mean, Boston is wicked cool, but it just isn't the same as NYC. What I like about Boston is the history of it- you can follow the red line on the sidewalk to all these historical places. It's really cool. Plus, there is a great beach- Revere Beach- right outside of the city. Those are the things I like about Boston. otherwise, I like NYC better. NYC has better transportation to get around the city too. The subways take you EVERYWHERE. in Boston, they have the T, which is like a subway, but it doesn't go as many places in the city. you have to walk, drive, or take a cab everywhere. lol I'll shut up about Boston and NYC now. lol. |
