On September 1st 1983, a Korean Airlines Flight 007, a Boeing 747 jumbo jet strayed hundreds of miles into Soviet restricted airspace and was trailed by Soviet interceptor jets for 2 hours.
The Soviet interceptors had fired warning shots, flashed their lights, tried to established radio contact with the civilian airliner but were unable to elicit any type of response. The KAL 007 flight had overflew sensitive Soviet military bases and the Soviets believed that it was an American spy plane as it had merged with an American RC 130 reconnaissance plane on thier radar which was also in the area.
The RC 130 flew back to it's base in the Aleutian Islands but the KAL Flight 007 continued to fly inside restricted Soviet airspace.
After having followed it for about 2 hours, the Soviet interceptors knew the Korean Airliner was about to reenter international airspace. A Soviet interceptor jet fired 2 missiles which hit the KAL Flight 007 causing it to crash into the Sea of Japan killing all 269 passengers & crew on board.
To this day there is still mystery surrounding this Korean Airlines Flight 007 flight. Was it on a spy mission for the US government disguised as a civilian airliner with the belief that it would not get shot down. Or did it accidently strayed off course hundreds of miles into Soviet restricted airspace and ignored all attempts by the Soviets interceptors to assist it to land if it was in trouble or to warn it.
Did Unsolved Mysteries ever cover this unsolved mystery in civil aviation?
