View Full Version : Inside Jokes or References?

Are there any inside jokes or personal references incorporated into the show? I thought I caught one recently....Roseanne made a joke about winning an Emmy or something. I don't know the in's and out's of the show, so it flew over my head, but I had a feeling it had a double meaning.

I know Roseanne took heat about her rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner....I'm not trying to resurrect any dirt, but did she make a reference to it on her show?

I know she and Tom had a nasty divorce during the show's run. Something tells me that Roseanne wouldn't be able to hold herself back on that one, lol.

During the end credits of one episode, an out-of-character Laurie Metcalf sits in the Conner living room set and hums "Hooray For Hollywood" while polishing the Emmy she just won. As she's doing this, Roseanne sits beside her and glares (she never won the coveted TV trophy). It's been a long time since I've seen the episode, so I can't remember what happened after that.

I remember that tag.

At the beginning of the third season, the first episode, Roseanne walsk into the kitchen and says "It's such a beautiful. I just makes me want to sing!" Of course, the audience got the joke. That's the only reference to the singing I can remember.

There's the chicken shirt, which in the last episode of the 5th season everybody wore. It was introduced in the second season during the muscial episode in which Roseanne is put on trial for killing her family. Becky wears the shirt, if you'll notice. Everybody on the set just thought the shirt was so hideously ugly that they couldn't not include it.

There was also the inside jokes about the two Becky's which is discussed at length on this board.

Oh about the emmy- that was early in the fourth season. Roseanne glares at Laurie and then starts to chase her around the set. It was hilarious.

Can you give me one or two examples or direct me to where I can read about them?
Thanks. :)

When Lecy returns in the eighth season Roseanne comments where have you been? Well it seems like you've been gone for three years. Later Darlene asks Where have you been? Becky replys why is everyone asking me that.

There is the joke when they are watching Bewitched
Roseanne: I cannot believe they replaced that Darrin.
Jackie: Well it was a hit show they knew they could get away with anything.
Becky (Sarah): Well I liked the second Darrin much better.
You can listen to this at N@N website in the Conner Family Album. http://www.tvland.com/nickatnite/shows/roseanne/

In season 5 Jackie talks about a loose meat sandwich place in Iowa. In real life Tom Arnold and Roseanne owned a diner/ loose meat restaurant in Iowa.

Roseanne mentions in Season nine to Jerry: its so crazy it seems like a weird woman made it up.

Thanks for the link to that website. I haven't looked it over thoroughly, but it looks like fun, especially to a newbie like me who wants to learn about the show.

There was also another reference to Roseanne's singing abilities in the episode here Roseanne brings Becky's Home Economics class to the supermarket on a "field trip." As Roseanne and the students are in the checkout line, one of the girls was looking over the tabloids and says "My goodness, that woman is on the cover of these magazines every week!" Roseanne says "But I heard she's a heck of a singer!"

I am pretty sure the emmy tag was during the fifth season cause Laurie won in 1992 and Roseanne was convinced she would win too but didn't until 1993.

Also in season four I think the commercial episode when Roseanne is bummed about not being in the commercial Jackie tells her to cheer up and Roseanne says Yeah it's not like I was ever going to win an emmy or nothing. (not exact quote)

In the episode where Roseanne tries setting Crystal up with some guy, only to find out Crystal is with Dan's father, there's a scene where everyone's all sitting around the kitchen table eating dinner. The guy who Roseanne brought over in hopes of setting up with Crystal asks Dan something to the effect of: so who is the maker of your kitchen table? To which Dan replies: I'm not sure, I think his name is Garvin Eddy or something. Well, if you look at the ending credits for each episode, one of the shows Producers is named Garvin Eddy. That's one of the more subtle, and less obvious inside jokes Iv'e seen.

Also, as Tyler 77 said, there was another reference to Roseanne's National Anthem fiasco in the Home Ec. episode. The exact dialogue was: That woman is on the cover of like everyone of these magazines, as Roseanne replies: Yeah, but she's a damn good singer though. That scene always cracks me up.

I also heard from this board I believe, that as an inside joke, the cast would put funny, and amusing photos in the refrigerator to amuse themselves everytime they opened it. But I can't confirm whether that's true or not.

That's the Emmy reference I was referring to when I started this page.

I'm surprised nobody is coming up with any jokes about Tom Arnold. He got a lot of criticism for making a fat joke about Roseanne during an award's ceremony after they split.
If I recall, he publicly apologized.

I guess we do. The thing is, the reference was topical and coming on the heels of Roseanne's singing debacle, which was so fresh in everyone's mind at the time.

It made sense back then, but a decade or so later, the timeline blurs, and the connection is easily missed.

I saw the episode a few week's ago, and it went over my head like a 747. I'm glad I know now for when the episode is aired again.

Oddly, I don't recall a single joke being made about Tom Arnold after he left the show. Knowing Roseanne, you'd think she would have gotten some kind of retaliation for the things he was saying about her. I know she makes lots of jokes about him in her nightclub act, but she never really did on the show. The only thing I can think of as to why she didn't retaliate, is maybe she was so disgusted with him, that she didn't want to give him any extra publicity. That's the only reason I can think of as to why she never really retaliated.

That makes perfect sense to me mdntrider. She took the high road, and figured she had already made him famous enough.

For a couple who were once so in love that they were tattooing each other's names on their butts, they got mighty bitter.

In the last episode Roseanne makes a reference about Arnie/Tom Arnold. She says "I don't know what the hell happened to Nancy's husband, for all I know he was abducted by aliens."

about that pictures in the refrigerator, that is true. Roseanne said it herself. She said "There was one of george clooney's butt. that was a nice one". Those were in the eariler seasons.

Actually, in the final episode, Roseanne is going around the table. When it comes to Nancy,s he talk about how much she admires her. Then...

"I don;t know what happened to that husband of her's, but in my book I sent him to outer space"

I got this from Nick@Nite's Roseanne website.

"Many of the trials of her private life would find their way into the scripts of her show. Probably the most notable example of this was the day she dropped Tom Arnold's last name and the credits for the show listed every cast and crew member by first name only."

The 94-95 season(in syndication) is where Roseanne goes back to just Roseanne. In syndication, she was know as Roseanne Arnold from 1988 to 1994, when in actuality, she wasn't "Roseanne Arnold" that entire time. She should have been known as Roseanne Barr for the first couple of seasons.

Mr P was involved with the show for its entire run, I believe. They're still friends and he frequently posts on her website. He's actually her handyman now, and his wife Becky is Roseanne's personal assistant. Both very nice people

The Flagler comments were all inside jokes. Stacey (Tracey Lords) last name is Flagler. Also the episode where Becky and Mark move into the trailer, Dan tries to buy a hubcap from them and says it's from a 19-something Flagler. There are other instances but I can only remember these two right now.

don't forget all the crap about Jackie Thomas in the 92-93 season (I can think of at least 3 referneces to that show), Jackie Thomas was a bad sitcom that Tom Arnold did in that season that aired immediately following Roseanne

There was one episode in Roseanne's diner when she was talking to a customer and she refered to herself getting a face lift forgot the line. Also, she said becky left a year and a half ago when she got married and came back looking like a different person.

it was the season opener of the 94-95 season. I remember that when it aired. I thought it was hilarious., especially for the crew people who weren't known by name like the cast

Noticing you're a Jennifer Aniston fan from your avatar, it reminded me of the Friends opening credit right after Courteney Cox got married, in which everyone was "Jennifer Aniston Arquette", "Matthew Perry Arquette", etc...

In the Bar Mitsvah episode, one of the guests is looking at Roseanne and saying something like "oh looks like shes had a nose job, face lift, (and some other type of plastic surgery that I fogot)" and Roseanne just laughs and starts talking to Dan about something else.

Speaking of Bar Mitsvahs, there are a lot of jewish references on the show, some of them are the Bar Mitsvah mentioned above, Roseanne decorating her restaurant for the holidays and a third of the decorations were hanukah decorations, Roseanne referring to the Horah in one episode, playing "Sunrise, Sunset" in Dan's hospital room, any others that I can't think of. This is probably because Roseanne is jewish in real life (along with Michael Fishman).

Yes I noticed that one immediately when it aired on FRIENDS. I missed this one in Roseanne though. Gonna have to see if I have that one taped yet - I'd like to check that out.

In the episode, "The War Room," Roseanne's family and friends try to figure out a way to bring her out of her depression. Jackie makes a reference to the event in Waco, TX, suggesting that they should blast an annoying noise into Roseanne's bedroom to make her get out of bed. Leon says something to the effect of, "One choice there -- Tori Amos."

Supposedly, Roseanne's a Tori fan and listened to her music a lot on the set.

Lets see what I can remember...

The second Becky was on the show when they go to Disney and Roseanne tells her "are't you glad you're here this week

The original Becky returns in season 8 and everyone is asking where she has been

In an earlier episode, Roseanne tells Jackie that its 9' (or Jackie told Roseanne ?) and the other replies oh I love that show Jackie something, (that was a reference to Tom Arnolds show) and Roseanne says yeah I missed it last week (cause she was on the show the previos week)

That chicken shirt was worn by all the cast at various times

The imitation of Patty Duke done by both Becky's at the end of one show mocking The Patty Duke Show

The comments made about the second Darrin from Betwitched

Jackie dressed as Marcia Clark and Roseanne offered her something to eat and cut it with a bloody knife and suggested she found it in Chicago, and when Darlene had a shorter haircut she made a statement about her getting her hair cut like Marcia Clark

In season 9 Roseanne dressed and acted like the Nanny Fran Dresher, and in a later season made a reference to Friends (mind you it was not a plug for the show)

When Roseanne and Dan win the lottery and talk about their plans, Roseanne says to Dan something like "First I'm gonna drop you for a parasitic pig and then I'm gonna hook up with a young, buff guy."

Similar to the way Roseanne went from spouses in real life.

I just watched an episode of Roseanne about a week ago, and realized I was wrong about something. I said in this thread that a guy asked Dan who the maker of his kitchen table was, and Dan said Garvin Eddy. The guys' actual question was: who designed your kitchen, not who made your kitchen table. Also, I said Garvin Eddy was a Producer for the show, but in reality, he was the shows set designer. I never really understood the joke, but now, knowing he was the shows set designer, it makes sense. Anyway, I just thought I'd clear that up.

Beyoctch- I noticed that too an that's why I stick by the theory that the final season of Roseanne was about the actress and her life since hitting it big, not about the character. It was sort of autobiographical. The the spa episode (Roseanne's surgerys), the tabloid episode, the wrestling with Jackie (like Tom & Roseanne), Roseambo (like Roseanne took on Hollywood and championed feminism- at least in her mind), ect.

The quote about Jackie Thomas came at the end of the episode where Jackie and Roseanne's father dies, my favorite episode of the series.

Jackie: Do you want to watch tv?"
Roseanne: "God yes, what's on?"
Jaclkie- "Hey, it's 9:30, that Jackie show is on. Did you see the one last week where he had that stalker?"
Roseanne- "No, I didn't see that one."

The joke kind of gets lost now because The Jackie Thomas show is an afterthought at this point, but it was pretty funny at the time.

Seeing how the First name only credits was mentioned, I can't wait till Season 7 is released, so I can actually see them listed as Roseane, John, Laurie, Sara, Sarah, Micheal, etc. Did the Arquette credits actually make it into syndication? It also would have been funny , if when roseanne barr, went to Roseanne Arnold, if the entire cast would have had the last name Arnold for that episode.

there was the one episode where she was pregant and didnt appear on the show until the end when she did a monologue telling children where babies come from. somewhere in it when shes talking about where to get the father, she says something like "it can be your limo driver or anyone else you find" which is a joke about her dating her limo driver who i believe is the one who got her pregnant.

well I don't know if it counts if it's within the show but in the episode where dan and roseanne had the huge fight about him not sticking to his diet, he said someting about making dinner like..."ya want me to make dinner? i can fix dinner, i'm fixing dinner!!" then roseann says "oh but hunny you just fixed dinner eleven years ago!" and in the first episode "life and stuff" they had the same little tiff about dinner only after dan said that roseanne says "oh but hunny, you just fixed dinner three years ago!" hahaha well if that's not the same thing i dont really care, it's still reaaaly funny!!

Roseanne referenced Tom Arnold (post-split) in the episode where Jackie climbs out of the TV as Marcia Clark. Marcia says "You know how the ex-husband thing goes" and Roseanne says, "Yeah, tell me about it, man."

About the Tom Arnold references, I can remember one where, while the credits were rolling like when the actual show plot line was over, the actress that plays Jackie- her name escapes me right now for some reason I have no idea why because I can usually remember- she crwals out of the tv dressed as Marcia Clark (I just found her last name, lol), the prosecution attorney in the OJ Simpson trial, and Roseanne asks her about going through a public divorce through a trial, and Roseanne makes a quip about how everyone knows how all that ex-husband stuff goes, lol. Oh whoops, sorry, someone else just posted that.

about facelifts and such, I remember Roseanne sitting in a chair, I believe it was in a beauty parlor or a spa and telling by the time it was probably later in the show's airing, but someone said something like that's not her real nose, or they said it to her like that's not your real nose or something like that, lol. Sorry to be so vague... but I didn't think Roseanne got a nose job... did she, lol, or was it just a rumor.

That chicken shirt was also accompanied by a bee shirt and possible a cow shirt, if I can remember correctly, but in the last season of the show where Roseanne and crew visit a family on Martha's Vineyard (represent, lol, I don't live there, I live right over the ocean from there), at the end the whole family is wearing that chicken shirt and waving goodbye to them as they leave.

That's it for now. That's what I can remember anyways, lol. Oh wait, one more, in the epsiode where DJ is gonna have sex with the girl he met at the video store, he's looking for protection in his dad's top dresser drawer and finds a picture of some movie star, lol, I don't remember her name, and after the girl leaves -the decide not to do that yet, lol- DJ raises his eyebrows and runs upstairs with the picture, possible referencing to the "band instrument" episode, if anyone remembers the joke that darlene makes. lol. It's my favorite show for a reason, it's hillarious and timeless. <3. xoxo.
