ROME, N.Y. -- As many as three children were killed Tuesday in an early morning house fire that sent six others to the hospital, state police said.

The bodies of two children were pulled from the charred rubble of a two-family home, troopers said. Autopsies were scheduled for Wednesday morning to determined their identities.

Three children _ ages 4, 5, and 10 _ remained unaccounted for Tuesday night and were believed dead, but police had not yet determined whether their bodies were the ones found in the rubble.

Three more children and three adults were taken to a local hospital for burns and other injuries. Three people were treated and released, with the others sent to University Hospital in Syracuse.

Rome Fire Chief Roger R. Sabia said the fire, which was reported at 6:18 a.m. and burned the house to the ground, was so intense that firefighters were forced out of a bedroom where they saw four empty beds. At least seven trucks were called to the scene.

"Then they tried the front and the heat and flames pushed them out of that," Sabia told the Daily Sentinel of Rome.

He said a cause had not been determined.

State police identified the three unaccounted for children as: Nicholas Leavitt, 4; Michael Leavitt, 5; Natalie Garba, 10.

Hospitalized were Jackson Leavitt, 4; Charles "Alex" Garba, 7; Katlin Wright, 8; Christopher Peck, 29; Sharon Leavitt, 34; Kenneth Peck, 48, troopers said.

A couple of tree limbs in the front yard started to catch fire before firefighters doused them. Halloween scarecrows made of old costumes still hung from the trees. Toys and plastic tricycles were scattered throughout the back yard.

The house is only down the street from where my dad lives. He says when he went jogging they all used to wave to him and stuff. The three children who died's pictures are on the front page of the newspaper. It's so sad. :(

awww that's so sad poor kids. We should all pray for them tonight. They are going to need a lot of help and love. Is there anything that the community is doing to help them? :(

Yeah :( All I could find so far is in the newspaper that you could make out checks to the "Leavit Family Fund" and drop them off at the bank which is obviously only for local...so I don't know. I wish I could fine something out, though. :(

I have seen a lot of families whose homes have gotten burned down due to either a fuse being blown out or stuff like a candle or fire getting out of control!! I hope that the family can get all the help that they really, really, need!!
