View Full Version : Two questions that are driving me crazy
ddelta 11-07-2003, 11:14 AM Okay I am new to this board but i have been reading if for quite some time because i am a HUGE unsolved fan since the show started.
I have two questions that are driving me crazy so i thought i post it and see if any of you knew the answers.
1. The other night they had the Dan Short case on Lifetime. The bank president that was killed by being dumped in the water alive tied to a chair with a brick. They had an update that two people were caught in 1992 but not how they knew Dan Short or what happened to them. Does anyone know?
2. Also, not really an unsolved question but it has to do with the same type of cases. I remember back in 1986 or 1987 there was a show or tv special with Patrick Duffy and Meredith Baxter about missing persons. I can't remember the name and its driving me crazy because i remember each case that was on it. They were the Cherri Ann Mahon girl who went missing in NH when she got off her school bus. Apparaently a van with a skier was following the bus. There was also a very spooky case about a little girl disappearing in a dessert and then a little boy disapperard a short time after her. Some guy researching the case disappeared after that. There was a case about a brooklyn girl who disappeared when she went to an ice cream truck and finally a girl who disappeared after her step dad left her in the car when he went to do something. They showed 6 sightings of her...one in a restaurant, and one running along a parkway by an actual family member....oh and there was a case about an old woman who they think walked away due to alzheimers.
Does anyone remember this show or was it a tv special. And besides the Mahon case does anyone know the names of the other cases. I would love to find out if there was an update on any of them.
Thanks!
Dilly 11-08-2003, 07:52 AM It sounds fascinating but I don't recall the show. I do know that Cherrie Ann Mahan is still missing.
Brent88 11-08-2003, 12:45 PM That wasn't on Unsolved Mysteries obviously, because Patrick and Meredith never hosted any UM specials.
FanfromES 11-08-2003, 02:07 PM I looked over Duffy and Baker careers on IMDB, and didnt find anything about this show. It must be kinda obscure to be missed by the IMDB folks.
I knew that Patrick Duffy once hosted a special called "Manhunt Live." I never saw it, but I knew that they did a segment on the Green River Killer. So you might be thinking of that. However, I knew that it never became a regular series.
As for the case of Dan Short, the Agofsky brothers (Joe and Shannon) are doing life in prison. The following link will explain it:

SJP1313 11-08-2003, 04:01 PM Hi,
Im from NH, a lifelong resident and havent heard of this case. Im wondering if someone can fill me in on the case of Cheri Ann Mahon. I would love some details, perhaps a town name... anything you know really. Ive tried to do some research on it, and have come up with nothing.
Thanks

This web site explains the disapperance of Cherrie Ann Mahan. From what i remember about the special is a van with a skier on the side was following the bus along the route. Cherrie got off her stop less then 100 yard from her house and was never seen again. The kids on the bus said they remember the van not following them any further from that stop and that Cherrie walked past the van towards her house. She was from Cabot Pennsylvania.
Also, i too went to the IDMB website and could not find the special in Duffys or Baxters list of credits. HOwever, i will never forget that show for some reason. It definetly was not UM but i think it was called either missing or vanished. I think it was just a one time special but i really thought they did a great job of recreating the scenes. I really wish they would of kept it on. They had the scary music and all.
Equilla Lynn Hodrick was the girl who disappeared in the Bronx when she went to an ice cream truck.
The show aired in 1985 or 1986 as both of these girls disappeared in 1985. I figure it was probably a show that the network aired to see how it would do and did not pick it up. I really am just trying to remember the names of the other people to see if they were ever found. Oh well!
Composite Sketch 11-08-2003, 08:10 PM This reminds me of a short-lived Canadian TV show about missing kids that was on YTV (I think?) at around 1993. It was very similar to UM in that they had segments with actors for each case. I remember several of the kids featured but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the show.
rerungirl 11-09-2003, 03:37 AM I remember watching at least one episode of the series that was hosted by Patrick Duffy and Meredith Baxter and I believe it was sometime in the late 80's. I'm not sure this was a network show...it might have been syndicated. It came on at midnight in my area and I remember wondering if anyone was going to watch it at that late hour...let alone call in with any useful information.
In addition to the Cherie Ann Mahan case, they also profiled a young boy who had gone missing from one of the western states. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it was Montana. His mother said he was always talking about what he wanted to do when he was older...that he wanted to travel around the country and maybe visit some Indian reservations. Authorities thought at first that he might have run away to get out of the small town where he lived and see some new sights. They believed he would come home or at least call his mother after a few days but that never happened. He didn't take any money with him and there were no sightings of him anywhere after he disappeared. I wish I could remember this boy's name. I've never seen his story profiled on any other show and have no idea if this case was ever solved.
rerungirl 11-09-2003, 03:49 AM Forgot to include this in my previous post. Probably the oddest case they profiled was the girl who disappeared after her stepfather left her sitting in a car while he ran some errands. Lots of sightings of her after she went missing. The last person who saw her said her clothes were about two sizes too big (and they was not the outfit she was wearing when she disappeared). The whole case was weird. Lots of unanswered questions.
Brent88 11-09-2003, 11:37 AM Patrick Duffy and Meredith never hosted a special called "Unsolved Mysteries" you can check the episode guide for this.
BTW: It couldn't be Unsolved Mysteries since it didn't start til 1987.
SJP1313 11-09-2003, 11:38 AM Ok, so let me get this straight, Cherrie Ann Mahan is not from or missing from NH???
ddelta 11-09-2003, 08:57 PM Sorry about that Cherrie was from PA and not NH. MY mistake.
And yes Reuniongirl you definetly did see the same special i saw. That girl was left in the car with her stepdad went to get a soda or something and when he came back she was gone. Then they had all of these people who spotted her wearign this red and white flannel and jeans that were way to big for her. One was at a restaurant where she was not allowed to speak to the waitress and another was her family member who saw a girl wearing those exact clothes running along the parkway (he did not realize that she had gone missing at that point). I cannot for the life of me remember the name of her.
I don't recall the other case you mentioned. Maybe they aired two? ANd i don't think it was on at midnight because i was 9 or 10 at the time and i would never be allowed to stay up and watch anything that late.....

Could the girl case in the dessert be Laura Bradbury??
icomeinpeace 10-21-2004, 09:16 PM There were a couple of specials like that in the 80s. One on HBO featured the case of Johnny Gosch, the missing Iowa newsboy. I remember the creepy scene where one minute he was sitting on the hill in the gray dawn hours, folding papers, and the next minute he was gone. I've looked everywhere for that HBO special, but I've never been able to find it. I remember seeing though.
Rick Schroder was on one of those specials, too. I distinctly remember him saying he was related to a missing child (Laura Bradbury?). He was speaking to a group of schoolchildren... However, I looked imbd.com, and there wasn't any mention of him being in a special like this.
nohwheregirl 10-21-2004, 11:44 PM I also remember the show with Meredith Baxter. I was pretty young when it came on, but I specifically remember the show b/c I knew her from "Family Ties," and the special was kind of creepy. In fact, I've always thought that the special was the first time I saw the Tara Leigh Calico case on tv, but I could be wrong. She went missing in New Mexico (desert?) and there was a photo found of what many think is Tara and a missing boy bound and gagged in the back of a van. (you can do a search on this board for more info).
I also remember that viewers were instructed to call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children if they had information, and, if my memory is correct, they filmed parts of the show at NCMEC headquarters.
rerungirl 10-25-2004, 07:51 PM I have always been interested in missing person cases and, over the years, have watched several programs that deal with disappearances and abductions. One of them (I'm pretty sure it was an HBO special) profiled the case of a middle aged woman who lived in a rather remote area near a lake. She went missing and some of her children believed their father was responsible. There was also the case of a young college student (in New York, I believe) who disappeared on New Year's Eve. He was attending a party that night and stepped outside to get some fresh air. He vanished without a trace and police had absolutely no leads to follow up on.
palmyrafan 07-28-2006, 12:55 PM I too have been wondering about Rick Schroder and the missing girl from the desert.
If I remember correctly, the family was out camping (?) in the desert and the little girl walked out of camp a little ways, with her parents' permission not to go too far, and then disappeared.
Apparently there was an older man with a pickup or camper that had been seen in the area that was paying particularly too close of attention to the family and the police suspect(ed) he either witnessed something or abducted the girl.
I thought perhaps they said the little girl was related to Rick Schroder, possibly his cousin or niece, and he was asking the public's help in trying to find her.
I only saw the episode air one time and am not even sure that it was on UM.
Anyone else know anything?

There was a case similar to the circumstances you're describing profiled on UM and her name was Nyleen Kay Marshall. She's never been found.
As for the little girl murdered who was a cousin to Rick Schroeder her name is Laura Burbank. UM never profiled her case but here is an old thread that mentions her:

I thought that was Laura Bradbury.
There was a murder victim named Laura Burbank who was featured on UM. Her killer was David Harry Fisher. Check out the following link:

You're right Kane, it is Laura Bradbury. I got the names confused with the UM case involving Laura Burbank, another little girl who was murdered.
kadrmas15 11-13-2006, 06:41 AM In terms of Dan Short, two men were convicted of his murder. Shannon Agofsky who was only 19 at the time of the murder was sentenced to life in prison for the robbery in Oklahoma State prison. He was sentenced to life first for the robbery in Missouri court. Then he was charged in Oklahoma court with the murder and was sentenced to life without parole there as well as the federal crime of kidnapping a man and taking him across state lines. He was transferred to the federal system after being convicted in Oklahoma. He was then brought up on federal charges for the murder and was sentenced to life without parole for that crime in 1997. However in a strange twist Agofsky was charged with murder again for murdering a fellow federal prison inmate by karate chopping him in 2001 and he was sentenced to death in 2004 for that crime. He is currently at the federal death row in Terre Haute, Indiana. His brother Joseph Agofsky was convicted of the robbery in Missouri and his first federal trial into Dan Short's murder ended in a mistrial but he was convicted in his 2nd trial and was sentenced to life without parole and is now in a federal prison in Florida.
As for David Harry Fischer I could be wrong but I think remember one time in the past hearing an update of this case that was different from the volume 6 update. Fischer was captured in 1990 and was returned to prison and was paroled again in 1994. Unbelieveable they let him plead guilty to 2nd degree manslaughter back in 1970 in the first place. Even more unbelievable they paroled this guy before his sentence was up.
