I don't know if anybody remembers this, but when Cate's dad was in the bedroom with her talking about something, I can't really remember exactly what it was, he said something was "like cleaning out the attic, if we just did it, we'd be done in 30 minutes, but it's the memories that hold us back." What was that something? Please get back to me on this if anybody has any information. I thought it was an awesome saying, and would be a great quote! Thanks

She was talking about how Paul spent 5 hours writing his last column on the computer after her dad said he found it in the recycle bin. I don't remember the exact quote though

The quote was

"We spent 5 hours at that desk" (talking about her and the kids)
"It's kind of like cleaning out an attic if you just did the work you'd be out in 30 minutes it's the memories that slow you down."

She wasnt talking about Paul spending 5 hours she said "We" I put it on the closed captioning to the exact quote to post. She was referring to her and the kids when they went to his desk and looked for his last article, and ended up spending all that time looking at the things he kept, the memories

It went like this:

Cate's father had just come into the bedroom, sat down on the bed, told her that he'd found Paul's last article in the Recycle Bin of the computer and given her the printed copy. He remarked that Paul must not have thought much of it (having deleted it).

She said, "He spent five hours at that desk."

Her father said, "Well, it's kinda like cleaning out an attic. If you just did the work, you'd be out in 30 minutes -- it's the memories that slow you down."

Cate said, "Oh Dad, why did this happen? We don't deserve this."

He replied, "That's 'cause we live under the impression that we get what we deserve. If I got what I deserved, I'd never have you and your sister in my life. "

"Oh, Dad . . ."

"No, seriously, what have I ever done to deserve two such angels? Or Rory or Kerry or Bridget?"

Then, he said something about valuing the time you have left with people and always letting them know how you feel.

He ultimately said, "I love you, Cate. I'm just sorry I don't say it enough."

Then, he kissed her, got up and left the room.
