This may or may not be more aimed at the serious listeners out there.

These are the songs that have The Coolest openings & you're compelled to hit reverse & hear it again...& again!

For me (& these are just some):

We're An American Band- Grand Funk RR (Great drum opening)

In a Big Country- Big Country (that entire military drum opening w/ the distorted guitars! Love it!)

Love Rollercoaster- Ohio Players (The strummed electric guitar & when the drums come beating in! Wow!)

Ogre Battle- Queen (What an amazing use of studio wizardry. Brian May rocks on the opening! You could swear Metallica used this song as their blueprint!)

The Rocker- Thin Lizzy (Eric Bell's riff in the opening is killer! Now playing in headphones btw!)

My Sweet Lord- George Harrison (Love the layered acoustics! Such a big, rich sound)

5150 & Little Guitars- Van Halen (Such high-spirited energy on '5150' & on 'Little Guitars', the whole classical guitar solo & slow rhythm of the drums, guitar & bass before the vocals kick in--amazing!)

Seether- Veruca Salt (Another killer opening guitar riff! I love the vocal scream- "OWW!" Everything up til the verse begins. Kicks arse!)

Song For America- Kansas (A dramatic, lengthy opening for a great 10 minute song!)

So many....
:)

I think Foreigner's "Double Vision" has an awesome beginning, it really draws you into the song, and you could recognize it anywhere. The same for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Those opening measures just kinda draw you in.

I'm thinking now if there're many songs w/ great endings. I couldn't think of a single current example, but 1st on my list would have to be the Beatles' A Day In The Life.

As for beginnings-

Tie Your Mother Down- Queen (unedited opening)

I'm glad someone else knows what the hell I'm talking about.

That is a great song- I don't care if Jon Anderson is missing, it is definitely one of the best Yes songs ever.

I had to bump this thread back up.
I heard this song last night while I was out imbibing.

How could we forget "Bad To The Bone" by George Thorogood?

One of the most recognizable opening guitar riffs of the past 20 years.
