That's great!! I have "Gert Rides Again" also! It came on one of our local stations one time. (Fox 13) I still need a few more eps, including "Bye Bye Baby!" And, then, I'll be through too. :D

Thanks! :D I could tell that it had been taped off TBS because it had the "SUPERSTATION" logo at the bottom but it was from a few years ago, because it didn't have the yellow/blue logo that appears at the bottom of the screen that says "You're watching Mama's Family"...it was a small, red logo at the bottom right corner that said "MAMA'S FAMILY" then disappeared. BIG W even edited out the commercials. What a guy! :D

No prob. I think I've got them all. I have one more episode I need to tape ("The Big Nap"), then after that, I'll have all 135 episodes. If I somehow miss it again, I'll ask you again :)

Thanks from me, too. But, I think I can get them by myself. I only have a few eps left, and I just need to remember to set the VCR. Thanks, again. :)

So...how is the episode?

Also, PZelda - that actually sounds like a it could be from up to 4 or 5 years ago...when I first started watching this show around 2 or 3 years ago on TBS, it was a newer logo than that...

I thought the ep was awesome! I loved the dance that Mama & Gert do towards the end.

Yep, I remember when TBS used to do that. It's been quite a while and I have no idea what timeslot MF was in back then

I remember watching it all the time during the summer. Just a few years ago it ran at 11 AM-12 Noon. Then it ran at 8-9 AM for a while, before reaching it's current (awful) time-slot, 6-7 AM...

Ohmigosh, I just realized! This is the one episode in the whole series where Naomi has different hair than she did during the NBC years... She didn't have straight hair like she did during the NBC years but her hair wasn't poofy like how she had it during the syndicated years...It was just a little poofy but not that poofy. (Remember this was still 1983, and the NBC years didn't end until 1984) Her hair only went right to her shoulders, not past her shoulders like she had it...Her hair ACTUALLY looked a little normal...

Wow! If you could get some sort of screen shot of that it would be great!

Well, she had several different 'dos in those years... :p ...The long ponytail, the just over the shoulders ("The Wedding", etc.), the curl in it ("Mama Learns to Drive", etc.), but I know what ya mean---that's the one episode where she has that hairdo.

I actually thought it looked a li'l strange, I guess cause that's the only time we see her like that, lol.

Oh, by the way, my favorite nursing home member is the old woman in the party hat with the yellow feather and noise maker that goes, "to you" after everybody's already finished singin' "Happy Birthday"! :rotflmao:

I taped this episode off of my local ABC affiliate in 1992 & I taped it again off TBS when they first started airing Mama in the fall of 1997. Now I'm sure this has already been discussed, but when did TBS quit airing this episode and why?

It was not just this episode. TBS did not air quite a few episodes and I asked the same question and the answer is not clear. The episode where Mama wins an arm wrestling contest was also not shown among others.

It was likely due to music clearances. At first some of us thought it was the group singing Happy Birthday. However, it's more likely due to the instrumental clip Chariots of Fire by Vangelis of musical chairs. There is also another song performed by Gert and Mama. According to the Time Life DVD set, the music was either replaced or cut out.

It is intact on the syndicate cuts available thru Vudu streaming.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. That makes sense. On Logo TV and MeTv the episode airs today with all 3 songs intact. I was a rabid Mamas Family fan and watched every night on TBS through the entire 1990s. I was floored when about 10 years ago I discovered this episode. However there were a few other episodes that never aired either. Fly Naomi, Grandma USA, and the episode where Mama arm wrestles never aired in syndication on TBS which was the network that carried Mamas Family in the 1990s.

At some point TBS stopped airing Gert Rides Again. If I recall correctly there was a problem with the episode quality of it, when I finally got it someplace, and that may be why they quit airing it. They also stopped airing Alien Marriage, but I think I recorded that arm wrestling episode from TBS years ago.

And yes on Time-Life's DVD the Gert episode subbed other music for Chariots of Fire. MF is one of those series that no company has done a great job putting the series out on DVD. With Warners the problem was syndicated versions of seasons 1 and 2, and with Time Life the problem was not licensing music. T-L could not even license a few seconds of Willie Nelson, but not licensing the tune "Happy (Harper) Days are Here Again" for the mayor episodes? Ridiculous.
