Vegas Girl 11-02-2003, 11:30 PM I voted for sponged off parents. In the pilot episode, she said to her parents something like, "I don't know what we would have done without you." If Carol had a job, she probably would have kept on working even after she got married. Mike was no doctor or lawyer. They could have used another income to support six kids and pay for a full-time housekeeper. Why did she need to stay home? The kids were in school all day and Alice did most of the work. Elizabeth B. 11-04-2003, 01:41 AM I honestly think it was a combination of three things: 1. She probably got some kind of insurance payout, if he indeed passed away (not divorced). 2. Carol and the girls probably moved into her parents' house (it looked like a roomy place in the pilot episode), not only for financial support but emotional support as well. 3. Carol perhaps had a small part-time job, such as a secretary, to bring in some extra money so as not to deplete the insurance money. That's my theory, anyway, and maybe she brought the insurance money into her's and Mike's marriage. Incidentally, he probably had a hefty chunk of change from his wife's insurance as well. How else could they afford those vacations (airfare and hotels for 9 people!!!), a live-in housekeeper, enough fashionable clothing, food, and orthodintia for ALL SIX KIDS, and that huge house. The grocery bill ALONE must have been staggering! Vegas Girl 11-05-2003, 02:55 PM Don't forget - the trips to Hawaii and Kings Island were paid for by Mike's company. (Like they would pay for nine people to go - right!) Mike and Carol's spouses were only in their early 30's when they died. Many times people that young aren't even thinking about life insurance. They put it off. "I have time..." So I don't assume they had life insurance. LOL. I had to laugh when I saw that posting. Nice Observation! sixfingers 06-07-2008, 09:03 PM I honestly think it was a combination of three things: 1. Jude The Obscure 06-08-2008, 01:35 AM About the life insurance thing, I may be an exception, but I have had a policy since I was 18. To say people by their 30s don't have one is very irresponsible. Funerals cost people......get insurance! |
