When I first heard the rumor about Lucy having an affair with Red Buttons, I thought it was funny, yet rediculous. However, is it that far-fetched?

View Full Version : Red Buttons rumor revisited Ricardos4ever 11-01-2003, 12:52 PM When I first heard the rumor about Lucy having an affair with Red Buttons, I thought it was funny, yet rediculous. However, is it that far-fetched? Judge for yourself. ;) Mickey 11-02-2003, 07:27 AM IMHO in that picture she looks like she'd rather be somewhere else! Archives are full of pictures of actors, musicians, etc hugging each other. Doesn't mean a thing. What tells real stories are the pictures when they don't know they're being photographed, or have forgotten about the cameras. Not set up shots like that. And as I hope we've all learnt by now, pictures when the people don't know they're being photographed are not nice! SPLAIN 11-03-2003, 11:58 AM Yup, that's the first time i've ever disagreed with you, what on earth does a picture together confirm? What's really funny is that they were also together at the Oscars a month before she died. When you see Red in the crowd at the beginning, Lucy follows later after Martin Landau. Red is hard to spot though, he's right in front of Robin Williams. Lodee 11-03-2003, 02:35 PM So when was she supposed to have had her fling with Red Buttons? 50's. 60's or 70's? x1LucyFanx 11-03-2003, 03:18 PM Who knows Lodee...I don't even know who Red Buttons is LOL, I've never seen or heard of him before except in the picture above. ;) MagsLovesLucy 11-03-2003, 03:42 PM Originally posted by Lodee So when was she supposed to have had her fling with Red Buttons? 50's. 60's or 70's? Apparently in the 50's (I think), but who knows? Lucy had her picture taken with a lot of celebrities, so this picture could mean nothing. Personally, I don't think that a picture together confirms that much, but maybe it'll always remain a mystery. SPLAIN 11-04-2003, 11:20 AM To be honest, i was a little shocked myself when i first heard the rumor, Cary Grant i could understand, but Red Buttons? He was an Academy award winner who later appeared on those Dean Martin roasts doing comedy. Lodee 11-04-2003, 02:38 PM To be honest, i was a little shocked myself when i first heard the rumor, Cary Grant i could understand, but Red Buttons? hey, maybe that was HIS name on that piece of paper! SPLAIN 11-04-2003, 03:00 PM No, i always opted for Gary's myself. At least with Red, the kids would have had a better chance of being REDHEADS! Kazza 11-04-2003, 03:07 PM But not even that was legitimate:lol: Lodee 11-04-2003, 04:30 PM Originally posted by SPLAIN No, i always opted for Gary's myself. ! Now that's just sad. Although you have a point, it would need to be someone she wasn't very familiar with to raise suspicion, wouldn't it? Otherwise she could just say she had his name to ask him something about work or something. Hmmm.....let me give it some thought. SPLAIN 11-04-2003, 04:49 PM At least if it had been Fonda or someone of that stature, although he was divorced five times, so maybe not! Mickey 11-04-2003, 06:34 PM I thought her relationship with Henry Fonda ended years before? He saw her with her makeup smudged, said 'Yuck', and walked out on her?! So the story goes, anyway... Amber8611 11-04-2003, 11:30 PM I thought that too, until his daughter (Jane?) wrote that they were in love and possibly had an affair while filming "Yours, Mine, and Ours." I doubt this will ever really be solved though. I'm still curious to find out who's name was on that piece of paper! SPLAIN 11-05-2003, 10:36 AM It was Herman Schmidlap! The Fonda story was that she and Ginger Rogers dated Fonda and Jimmy Stewart and had put on heavy make up for evening and they were still dancing at dawn when the sun came out their make up was so heavy for daytime Fonda made the comment and joked that if he hadn't that studio might have been called Henrylu! Mickey 11-05-2003, 11:18 AM Well Fonda certainly comes out looking rather better in that version of the tale Splain! :) Lodee 11-05-2003, 02:08 PM I think the name would have to be someone she wasn't friends with, otherwise it wouldn't have been that unusual that she jotted the number down. SPLAIN 11-05-2003, 02:15 PM When Fonda later appeared on Lucy's Dean Martin roast, he told the story yet again, and at the end pretended to kiss her and then pretended to throw up. Lucy and the entire Hollywood crowd always made fun of Fonda fpr being rather dull and boring, it was a joke that dogged him for years, so it's nice to know Lucy supplied him with ONE funny story to tell at parties. When Fonda had his American Film Institute award, Lucy was there and told another funny story about them. When they did The Big Street together, there's a scene at the end where he carries her up a staircase and for some reason they had to do the scene over and over and poor Henry was quite thin at the time and under his breath would say to her, what the H*** did you have for lunch anyway, you weigh a ton . . . I posted it as a joke, cause I happened to come across it on a site and had never seen it before. No way was I being serious about Red and Lucy having an affair! I just thought it was funny when I found it and thought I'd post it to stir things up a little. Lodee 11-08-2003, 07:01 PM . No way was I being serious about Red and Lucy having an affair! The funny thing is, that WAS a rumor going around. At least according to Splain. Ricardos4ever 11-08-2003, 10:22 PM I first heard that rumor on these boards awhile back and found it really funny; then I saw the photo and laughed about the rumor all over again. :D SPLAIN 11-10-2003, 11:39 AM Well, you did stir things up and it was quite funny to finally see them together in a picture, i read about the rumor in books. I had the same reaction when i saw he was in the line at the start of the Oscars in '89, her last appearance! |
