I have a Panasonic DMR-E50, and I have had two traders tell me that my DVDs don't work properly in their machines.

I'm curious if you've traded with others.

Thanks

Agent 13,

What kind of DVD-R's do you use?

I've used Best Media and Princo, but from what I understand about my recorder from visiting other boards this is typical no matter what name brand you use (i.e. Maxell). The only one that is supposed to be practically guaranteed to work in all DVD players are the Panasonic brands themselves, but they are far more expensive.

Why? do you have a Panasonic DMR-E50?

Agent 13,

I have a Panasonic DMR E30. When I first bought it, I tried out a cheaper brand of DVD-R's. I tried a brand called Optodisc, they were horrible. The would 'stall' in the machine and I did send one to my friend and it did not work in her DVD player. Luckily, I never did a trade with these.
At that point, I called up Panasonic to ask them what the best brand of DVD-R's to use, of course they told me Panasonic, but I said those cost way too much. They said TDK works really good and to go with those. So, now I will only use TDK. They work great, not one has stopped or stalled on me. I buy them on ebay, they aren't exactly cheap, but I'd rather pay more to know I am getting a good name brand product.

Good luck to you!

I recently got a recorder, Panasonic DMR E80 and so far have had no problems with any discs I've burned. I also use TDK dvd-r's and have tested them on an Apex player and a Sony player and they're compatible with those machines.

I use a Pioneer A04 myself. I have burned over 1000 DVD's with this over the last year and trade them all the time. Never had any problems trading with this. This drive works great except for one important fact. Since I got it as an OEM drive I am unable to change the firmware on it, and without doing that I am stuck using only a certain brand of media (Ritek) if I want to burn at 2x. Other media works great but will not copy at 2x, only 1x. But I personally like Ritek, it's the best cheapest media around considered by most people I know.

I trade on a forum that has 1000's of DVDR traders on it and the majority of them use Pioneer A04 (104) - A06 (106) burners. They were the pioneers of the -R format and make excellent burners. I hope to move up to a A06 (106) before to long, the idea I could be burning at 4x, taking 15 mins per disc makes me want to buy one right now!!!

I bought my Panasonic DMR-E50 on-line for $339.00 ppd. Now I kick myself that I didn't buy one sooner. DVDs sure beat VHS tapes, and they don't deteriorate like slp.

DVD Burners are not expensive in my eyes. A brand new Pioneer A06 will cost you about 160 dollars shipped from most places. By comparrison I bought my first CDRW burner back in 1999 and it cost me over $200, made the same mistake when I got my first DVDR burner, cost me $300. The thing about this is when I got them they were still pretty new, waiting a bit before buying new technology saves a lot of money. If you get a +R burner expect to pay more for the media, drives are about the same price. I just bought 100 pack last night of 2x, DVD-R's Ritek brand that cost me $89.00 shipped. By comparrison the DVD+R's were priced at $130 for 100 of them.

Remember that 1 DVDR is more then 6 CDR's of space so if you can get 600 CDR's branded media without rebates for $89, do it! Best I've seen is silver crappy cdr's that cheap and I never use those. And movies on DVD-R's look 1000000 times better then CDR movies so they are actually cheap to me :D

 I guess those who like to rip people off have ruined it for those who are honest and just trying to collect shows:rolleyes: I just don't have time (and, I'm not saying anybody else is less busy than I am) to record and edit tv shows. I also do not have the patience required:crazy: to be so meticulous as some of you are! But - when I do have free time - I enjoy watching some oldies - but goodies!!:p I also have a bozillian master videos that I'm trying to weed out the stuff my daughter doesn't want anymore and get some stuff somebody will watch. I guess I'll keep searching - so far i have found 2 people that produce excellent quality dvdr's....sgm1970 & skywalker2754...thanks Guys!!!

I know how you feel, I've had my dvd recorder for just over a week and have found myself dead sleepy everyday from staying up editing stuff I've recorded. Maybe once the newness wears off I wont be so obsessed.

WoW!! See...that's why I don't have a dvd recorder! I would start recording everything on tv and I would be up all hours of the night doing it!! :D It would be a fun hobby, I think - if I had the time and patience to do it right - and how CooL  it would be to have all of my favorite sitcoms on dvd!:happyface

I tried a few DVD Recorders, and have found that some play in other people's machines and some don't. I'm a little confused after reading some of the posts, cuz this technology is new to me. Is the consensus that Panasonic is the best out there? We tried Panasonic and it wouldn't play on two of our other DVD players. I just want to start converting my library to DVD, and want to buy the most compatable machine out there. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I already have my name down on a pre-order for a ONE OF A KIND, are you ready for this? One-piece, combo unit, dual deck, DVDR + VHS...what does that mean? The only one of its kind..it's hush hush right now unitl I get it, then i'll tell you the brand etc.. but it lets you take any VHS tape pop it in... (tape deck is on right hand side of player)

Insert a Blank DVDR or DVDR+ disc (left hand side of player) and lets you RECORD on any DVDR disc from your VHS deck... BOTH DECKS can record and play...and PANASONIC does not make it.. PHILLIPS does not make it, SHARP and any other brand...you;'ve heard of it..but I can't say until it's official! But trust me. I hope to be the first in line when it comes out! :) why the secrecy? because I would hate to adverise it and then it doesn't come out until the beginning of the new year, when if all goes to plan, it should be made public BEFORE Christmas..at the latest? after Christmas, ealry new year...so that is why I'm not saying, but I already got dibs on the 1st orders... Price $599.00 and WELL WORTH it! and yes, you can play ANY TYPE of DVD disc and CD, and MP3 discs etc... its' that good...so no more hookingup VCR's and cables etc... one unit, tons of festures, records off your TV, shows, sports cable satelite, etc... but the main Feature is lets you take all your archived VHS tapes and records them onto DVD discs at one push of a button... Play and Record... slow play, medium play, fast play... it's awesome...it's black, and sleek...and it WILL go on sale and it IS already finalized...if you find it, go for it! :) p.s I was about to invest $699 for Panasoinc and Phillips DVD Recorder...but NOW I won;t....save your money folks and wait a month... :)

Here's a compatibility chart for playing DVD-Rs:

This list is a little confusing and inaccurate. A better way of checking is by going to http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers and searching for your make and model number. Also look at the comments people leave. I had an Apex DVD player that was not supposed to work with DVD-R but a simple firmware upgrade to it made it compatible. Got my knowledge and the info from that forum and it's maintained by experts in the know about all of this :D

I agree, I knew what model of dvd recorder I was interested in, and all questions I had in mind were answered on that site. I found a ton of useful info there, so much that I didn't need to consult the manual when I got it. I just made the connections and was recording instantly.
