View Full Version : What did you think of Stan Hooper?
cheers freak 10-29-2003, 10:08 PM I thought it was great. I will definetly be watching agian next week. Its hard to tell how good a show is going to on its pilot episode but I thought it was funny and I love Norm MacDonald. Can't wait for next week.:)
I liked it too.
It's got a very "Newhart" feel too it, mostly because it was co-created by Barry Kemp, who did "Newhart," but that's not a bad thing.
Norm is good at playing the straight man. Thumbs up Norm, good to have you back on the tube!
;)
Crimson and Clover 10-29-2003, 11:44 PM I thought it was great.
Eddie Haskell 10-30-2003, 04:05 AM I'll give it more than one chance but didn't think it was all that funny. I'm hoping it picks up because I do enjoy Norm McDonald's humor.
glenny 10-30-2003, 01:16 PM This show will never make it through November. The comedy from Norm looks very forced. Also, way,way to many characters; it made it a little confusing. I really hops it finds a niche though, cause Reagan Dale Neis is a super hottie!! I will watch the show only to see her.
Pavan 10-30-2003, 01:21 PM Even if it is good, the ratings were very bad. Looks like it'll last a 'minute,' like the show's title says. A fourth place (almost fifth, it barely beat WB's Smallville at 4.4/7) at 8:30 p.m. with a 4.8/7 (behind 60 Minutes II, It's All Relative, and Ed). Though, it was #2 in it's timeslot among viewers 18-49 at a 3.7, behind time period leading It's All Relative at 4.1! It's All Relative is the real deal!
The O.C. was a 4th place for 9 p.m. as well (but built on Stan Hooper, with a 6.1/9), behind The Bachelor, West Wing, and King of Queens/Becker.
Freakzilla 10-30-2003, 02:48 PM I liked it and I hope the ratings improve. Hopefully, FOX will give this show a chance because it has potential.
Central Perk 10-30-2003, 04:19 PM I enjoyed it, but I didn't find it to be laugh-out-loud funny. It is way better than It's All Relative though, imo.
Adamantium 10-30-2003, 05:17 PM I liked it too. The whole time I was watching it, my sister kept saying that this show is going to cancelled in a week because it's actually funny. Both my sister and I are "Andy Richter" fans, and we all know how that turned out.
I think maybe they showed too much in the commercials. I mean all the funny jokes were in the commercial. Leave some of the jokes for the show, FOX.
I don't want to be negative, but every current show I watch never lasts long. And the ratings for this show seem to be proving that. So maybe if I quit watching it, it'll boost to the # 1 comedy.;)

As much as I hate to admit it, you're probably right.
FOX, more than any other network has no patience with new shows. If it's not winning it's timeslot right away, it's gone.
The 8-9 PM slot on Wednesday is too crowded! Between Ed, Smallville, Star Trek:Enterprise, and now That 70's Show/Stan Hooper, I have to start choosing between shows.
On can only tape so much...
;)

Sometimes when I'm watching a show and not taping it, when the commercial comes on, I try to to fast forward and wind up thinking my VCR is broke. :D
Using three VCR's (sometimes simultaneously) gets confusing sometimes and after watching certain shows a few times, it is almost a relief when I decide to eliminate a few. So far I've eliminated The Handler, Brotherhood of Poland NH, Las Vegas, Hope and Faith, Joan of Arcadia and probably Cold Case within a week or two.
Brian Damage 10-31-2003, 11:43 AM I missed it!
Freakzilla 11-03-2003, 02:49 AM I agree, the Wednesday at 8:30 slot is bad. FOX should move Stan to Sunday at 8:30. It's still a competitive time-slot, but it's major competition are all dramas. Sunday is FOX's best night for comedy. Plus, no show so far has been able to benefit from a "That 70's Show" lead-in.
Mr. Television 11-03-2003, 02:58 AM It wasn't a bad show but not as good as Norm. FOX is going to replace it with the half hour addition of American Idol in January though.
Skywalker 11-06-2003, 04:23 AM I thought it was good. For me, it's tied for second for best new comedies of this season. Tied with two and a half men.
Eddie Haskell 11-06-2003, 09:36 AM Damn......I watched episode #2 and I thought this show SUCKED OUT LOUD. One more week for me and that's it. I like Norm McDonald a lot and his other show was good but this one is the pits.
nimrod_86 11-06-2003, 07:36 PM This show is so dull and cheesy. This show is just I couldn't wait until it was over, so I could turn the channel.
Pavan 11-06-2003, 07:42 PM Episode #2 did even worse than last week, only a 3.3/5. For 5th place this time, Smallville was 4th place in the half hour.
Eddie Haskell 11-09-2003, 04:23 AM Lucky us..........Usually, even if I don't like a show, I like the lead characters wife. Not so in this show.....she sucks.
While I do like the show, I doubt it will be around much longer. FOX will pull it if it doesn't perform. Wednesday nights are too crowded. There's no way it can compete.
misterblowhole 11-15-2003, 01:45 AM I like this show.
It isn't exactly funny consistently, but I like how unique it is from all the other sitcoms out there. That makes it a worthwhile half hour to me.
Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it's doing too hot in the ratings, and we know that means that it won't last much longer.
It's funny that this show ended up on Fox. It really doesn't seem very Fox-like to me.
scarletbegonias 11-17-2003, 09:03 PM I think ...STAN HOOPER came into its own with the third episode in which Stan is accused of being a pool hustler. That was the first one that was laugh out loud funny - it was really an absurd and excellent episode.
I really wish that his last show, NORM, would have been on FOX to begin with. THAT was a truly hilarious show, with an excellent, bizarre premise and a great cast. I knew ABC would screw that up, putting it on Fri. nights. They also wasted another good sit-com with an excellent comedian, THE JOB with Dennis Leary.
I'm hoping the new show can last, as it's always a treat to see Norm on tv.
Pavan 11-19-2003, 06:26 PM FOX has replaced tonight's episode with a second airing of That '70s Show. The ratings have been very bad for Stan Hooper. It might not return next week for good.

Yeah, I'm not holding out much hope for "Stan."
Why doesn't FOX put "That 70's" Show on five nights a week and get it over with?
;)
Adamantium 11-19-2003, 11:33 PM This takes me back to when Andy Richter Controls the Universe was on. It followed That 70's Show and failed in the ratings, too. It's really making me resent That 70's Show. I just think that the audience that watches That 70's Show is not the same audience that watches Stan Hooper. "Stan" belongs on a different night with some better company.
It really ticks me off when people don't watch the same shows as me and cause them to get canceled. Some really great shows have died too young because no one will give them a chance. Yet shows like "Friends" "Frasier" and "The Simpsons" have long successful runs. Nothing against those shows, it's just they're not ones I love to watch. But everyone else in the world loves them.
scarletbegonias 11-20-2003, 03:03 AM I thought that Andy Richter... was a really funny show also. I generally detest sit-coms and feel that most of them are created for the intellectually challenged, so when I find one that I like, I'm happy. Of course, it is inevitably quickly cancelled. I hope that Fox will give this show a chance, and maybe some actual promotion (duh!) Norm MacDonald is one of the funniest humans on the planet, and his show deserves a chance simply due to his presence. Stan Hooper has improved over the course of the three episodes I've seen. Lots of luck to Norm on this one!
misterblowhole 11-26-2003, 11:05 AM Stan Hooper still seems to be scheduled for tonight, so let's all cross our fingers that it gets another shot.
I agree, That 70's Show and AMWSH appeal to 2 entirely different audiences, so using That 70's Shows as a lead-in might not be such a great idea.
Actually, That 70's Show is complete garbage, IMO, but it seems to be the only sitcom that can survive on Fox, and hence, their schedule has been littered with it's episodes for the past few years now.
Eddie Haskell 11-27-2003, 02:46 AM Only because there was absolutely nothing on at 8:30 last night did I tune in to Stan Hooper. I am amazed that Norm MacDonald would associate himself with such a low quality production. The acting is terrible and the lines are just not funny. This show needs to go ASAP.
Last night's Thanksgiving episode was a bit weak.
I don't think "Stan Hooper" will be celebrating Christmas on FOX this year.
barwars 12-12-2003, 10:16 PM IMO, this is shaping up to be a great show....
that will be an even greater one-year-wonder.
Which is a shame, I really liked this.
Eddie Haskell 12-15-2003, 04:24 AM IMO, this is the lamest piece of garbage to be put on the air since Baby Bob and that show sucked, sucked and more suck.
