I've always found U2 to be incredibly overrated. The only album by them I like as a whole came out in the 90's, not the 80's (Achtung Baby). They have some alright 80's stuff, but The Joshua Tree never captivated me the way it did many others.

Next time I do a list, should I do 1000 so I can even include LaToya Jackson and the sort?

U2 and REM are the best bands of the 80s.

End of story.

I love it when smart aleck's say "end of story." Of course I'm here so it's not the "end of story." ;)

Seriously though, I say Duran Duran. Heck, they are my favorite artist of all time. They were the epitome of 80s music and style.

Hey, I respect everyone's right to disagree!

I meant as far as my own opinion it is the end of story.

(and I'll admit I saw Duran Duran in 1984 at Madison Square Garden).

LaToya Jackson....:barf:  (I'm doing a Top 1000 list of the best 80's songs, but I don't know if I'm even going THAT far!!!)

Yeah, it's really kinda weird about U2. When you grow up in the 80's and you first hear about them, it becomes a revelation, but then when a good song like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" becomes an anthem and everyone misses the point, it really is a letdown. When "War" came out, it was so fresh and different. I think they justified the hype because their concerts were so exciting, but I think they knew they couldn't just stick with being "one thing" over a period of time, which is why they experimented with their sound (i.e., "The Unforgettable Fire"). It made sense that they updated their sound and image with "Achtung Baby" in 1991, and went away from the whole "taking ourselves too seriously" thing a few years before. I think "Rattle and Hum" has some good studio tracks, but they DID get massively hyped half to death in 1988. I think that ruined it for a lot of people.

Out of the lot, Def Leppard is the best. Now there are a lot of other bands from the 80's that are better such as Van Halen, Rush, etc.

I think John Mellencamp unjustly gets the shaft quite a bit. When he first hit the scene in the late '70s, he was dismissed as just a Bruce wannabe. A damn shame, really, as he's been consistently putting out great stuff since 1982's American Fool.

I agree, not a hardcore Mellencamp fan, but I do think his good music outweighs the bad. My fave song of his is probably "Pop Singer"

Why no Guns n' Roses or Poison either? These bands were huge in the '80s.

I felt I listed enough hard rock artists of the 80's,

and IMO, GNR didn't get great until 1991's Use Your Illusion, so I associate them as early 90's more than I do the 80's. So I don't think I should have to explain GNR when I used to defend them well into the mid-90's when "metal's not cool anymore" people would bash them. Wasn't Motley Crue, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi enough? There was only 15 slots when I did the post, you can't win em all. I bet if I had added one of those, someone elses' favorite may have been eliminated.

once again, I happen to think U2 are overrated as hell. I enjoyed Achtung Baby and Zooropa, but those were in the 90's. I feel the same way about R.E.M. I cringe when people say those were the "only good things to come out of the 80's", but neither of those exemplified what I loved about the 80's... fun. Just my opinion and nobody has to agree with me, I just have never really been able to get into either of those 2, and the U2 stuff I did like was after they lightened up a little bit.

I remember in 1995, I was thinking, "I wonder what happened to all those cool bands like Winger and Trixter and Steelheart and all those guys..." This was in the mid-90's in Seattle as I was walking to a show by the Accused, and the whole grunge thing had come and gone, and it really hadn't occured to me even then that "grunge killed metal", I thought it had just eclipsed it and there was some pop-metal scene somewhere. It was just de-emphasized.

I see how even in the mid-80's that bands like U2 and REM got so hyped up, as good as they were, that they were just taken too seriously. It was so bad with "Rattle and Hum", that a few years later that U2 had to seriously change their image.

I think the change was for the better personally. I kinda wish I'd been a little older to see them on the Zoo TV tour, to me that era (91-94) was much better than their 80's material IMO. However, I was so excited for Pop when that came out after the last 2 albums, and Pop probably wound up being their worst album ever.

I don't think U2's a bad band per se, I just don't get why some people consider them the 1980's equvilent of The Beatles, when I think someone like Prince or The Police, had they stayed together for 2 or 3 more albums, would've been more worthy of that honor. The Joshua Tree was a good album, but just not a cd I wanna pop in whenever.

R.E.M. I also find overrated, but I do like certain songs of theirs, but I wish they'd put out a comprehensive Greatest Hits with both the I.R.S. and Warner material (as I like stuff like Radio Free Europe and So. Central Rain from their IRS tenure, and Orange Crush, Losing My Religion, Bang And Blame, Imitation Of Life off their Warner years), I'd definately buy it. I don't "hate" either group, but I do think they both get a little overhyped.

I kinda felt bad about how all the metal bands were wiped out because of grunge myself. I loved Nirvana and also Pearl Jam, but even in 95, I still didn't quit listening to GNR or Def Leppard. I loved Bon Jovi's 80's material (well, mostly only Slippery When Wet/New Jersey, the first 2 albums were a tad cheee-z for my taste, at least since they were supposed to be hard rock), but nothing after Blaze Of Glory was quite the same IMO.

While GNR were one of the best bands of the late 80's/early 90's IMO, I almost have to be happy that they quit when they did. The Spaghetti Incident? was bad enough that I'm almost kinda happy they never did any BAD late 90's/early 00's albums the way Def Leppard limped along with Slang and X, or Motley Crue's New Tattoo, or the sort. By ending it there, they still had some integrity left. People MISS Guns N Roses, as opposed to be "man, these guys used to be so good" like they are with acts like Crue, Def Lep and Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi's last two albums, Crush and Bounce, are both really good. I would not place them on the same level as Slippery When Wet and New Jersey, but they are way better than Keep The Faith and These Days. I have to agree with you that Def Leppard have really lost it. I was so looking forward to X, because I read that it was a return to form for them, and I can't tell you how let down I was by it. There wasn't a single good song on the entire album. Guns N' Roses are technically still a band, though only Axl is the remaining member of the classic line up. In my opinion, I think that Axl should change the name of the band because wtihout Slash, Izzy and Duff it will never be Guns N' Roses no matter what the name of the band is.
