My mom just told me that Rod Roddy, the former announcer on Price is Right has died. He had been sick for a while and had left the show, but was expecting to come back.

Rod Roddy was definitely one of TV's best game show announcers. He was known for his outlandish wardrobe from Thailand as well as telling Price is Right contestants to "COME ON DOWN!" I remember him as the narrator on Soap where he opened each week's show with the line "This is the story of two sisters. Jessica Tate and Mary Campbell. These are the Tates. And these are the Campbells. And this is..SOAP!"

I also remember on other game shows such as Whew!, Battlestars, Press Your Luck and a short-lived game titled Hit Man. On that show's final episode when he gave the contestant plug, he said "If you would like to be a contestant on Hit Man, FORGET IT!" Somewhere in heaven, he will close each show by saying "This is Rooooooooooood Roddy speaking for The Price is Right. A Mark Goodson Television Production."

I just found out yesterday about Rod's death! He will be missed on TPIR and I'll be watching the tribute today. There have been three people substituting during his illness: Burton Richardson, Paul Boland, and Randy West.

Rod was truly one-of-a-kind. He was such a special part of The Price Is Right for so many years. I remember as a kid when Johnny Olson died, how that affected me quite a bit.
Then Rod came on the show and brought his own unique style with him. Whether it was his distinctive, booming voice or his eye-catching, over-the-top coats and ties, there was no mistaking Rod Roddy's presence on the show.
And he was a great emcee on top of that.
His passing really jolted me the other day. I just wanted to express my feelings as best as I could, because I really appreciated the great work that Rod did.
Rest In Peace, Rod Roddy

That was sad news. I saw Rod Roddy's clips from "The Price Is Right" since Thursday while I was setting my timer on my VCR. I read it from Kingston's Daily Freeman since Wednesday. This was the first in 17 years. The original announcer on that show was none other than Johnny Olson died first in 1985. I found this picture off the "Price Is Right" website.

Here's the original announcer Johnny Olson as seen here.

Here's the new announcer Burton Richardson as he took over right after Roddy's death.

I saw Rod Roddy as the announcer on the original "Press Your Luck" on GSN a couple of months ago and I saw him as the guest announcer on the new "Hollywood Squares" last year. Is the new "Hollywood Squares" will have a repeat of "Game Show Week" in honor of Roddy's death? Will find out what happens. Thanks!

When I was a little kid, I used to watch "Press Your Luck" and the "Price Is Right" with Rod Roddy a long time ago. About 2 weeks ago while I was on a home visit, I saw the last one with Roddy as a true announcer. I missed that guy. He was a splendid person. Here's the clip from the ending of the show with Rod Roddy as the announcer. (http://www.tpir.tv/30th/30end.rm) This was aired in 2002 as was done live in Las Vegas at the fabulous Harrah's Rio Hotel as part of the show's 30th anniversary celebration.

By the way, does GSN aired a tribute to the "Price Is Right's" announcer Rod Roddy including the episode of "Family Feud" with Ray Combs? Click here for the opening. (http://gsf.television-series.com/gsvideos/tpironffweb.rm)

If they haven't done one already, will "The Price Is Right" do a tribute to him? I haven't been watching the shows as much.

Now, Randy West has taken over the Rod Roddy's mic for "The Price Is Right". I saw it on TV the other day with a new announcer, Randy West from "Supermarket Sweep". Good luck, Randy!
