View Full Version : Do any foods remind you of FOL?
Jo Fan 4 Life 03-26-2001, 10:25 PM Whenever I eat peanut butter crackers I think of FOL cuz that's what I eat while I watch it at nite. Also when I eat the same cereal as they did in the last seasons and any Edna's Edibles-type pastry stuff! What about you guys?

FOL-FAN 03-26-2001, 11:53 PM Yeah, whenever I eat Oreos. I don't know why. Probably because the girls were eating them in "Take My Finals". Also when I eat croassants(Sp) and cereals too.

ZeldaGilroy 03-27-2001, 12:19 AM I think about FOL every time I sit down to eat a meal. The reason is that I have the exact same set of dishes that they had the last few seasons of the show, the brown ones with the dark blue flowers. The mother of a friend of mine gave them to me. She bought them in the early 1980's and when she bought new dishes a few years ago, she told her son to give them to me because I had just moved into a new house. It wasn't until I saw the episode where Natalie was writing about Mrs. G's wedding that I noticed she was drinking out of one of "my" cups. Then I started looking for the dishes in every episode. I saw them eat a lot of cereal out of "my" bowls as well. I know it's silly, but I get pretty excited about it!
TV Guy 03-27-2001, 09:48 AM The following foods remind me of FOL:
1. Wisconsin cheese puffs
2. Stuffed capons
3. Champagne (only when served WITH napkin)
4. Mama Rose's Bronx Pizza (Inc.)
5. Spaghetti with Polniaczek/Largo sauce
6. Coconuts (only when rolled at your best friend to spoil her play audition)
7. Oatmeal with raisins (and a fingernail or two)
Wild Child 03-27-2001, 01:02 PM For me it would have to be Milk Duds.I love them.Everytime I eat them I think of the episode Sisters when Jo and Blair were eating them. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

JMPolniaczek15 03-27-2001, 07:59 PM There really aren't any foods that remind me of FOL, but the refrigerator at my school is the same kind they had in teh kitchen at Eastland. Close enough.

Impressions 10-18-2020, 02:53 PM Wisconsin cheese puffs, of course, since I live there.

I had no idea you lived in Wisconsin, Impressions. If you don't mind me asking, what part of the state do you live in? Part of my family (cousins and aunt) live south of both Kenosha and Milwaukee, on the WI/IL border, and I have been to that area, and Milwaukee, many times. I've also visited the area of southwest Wisconsin, by Dubuque, since I lived for years a little west of Dubuque. So I'm familiar with southern Wisconsin, and found it a beautiful area.
I have never been to Appleton.

It is a beautiful area, especially northern WI and on the peninsula.
I live in Central Wisconsin. Grew up near Appleton. Been there hundreds of times. I don't consider it the "small town" that Mrs. Garrett describes in the show. About 75,000 people live there. It was probably half the size when Mrs. G "lived" there.

Since Mrs. Garrett was a farm girl, she probably lived in the farm country around Appleton and just said she lived in Appleton because no one would know the town she lived in. Many people tell others they don't know very well the closest reasonable size city that is near them as the place they are from.
RetroGuy2000 10-18-2020, 04:00 PM I agree that 75,000 is in no way a small town, but as you say, since she was reflecting on the past, she was thinking of Appleton maybe in the 1940s, when the community had just 28,000, which I still consider a town and not really a "small town", but it seems more reasonable. Charlotte herself was raised in Shorewood, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, which had 15,000 people in the 1940s when Charlotte was a teenager.

That's true, too, but she never says another town name, and Beverly Ann says the same: Appleton.
I lived in some ridiculously small towns, growing up. I couldn't even say the name of the towns because people would just give a blank look, and I would instead use the "near X", "west of Y", "east of Z" shortcuts. (In fact, I used that shortcut just above. )
valentina warner 10-18-2020, 05:38 PM I would have loved to live in Wisconsin and meet CHARLOTTE: of course we all know she moved to New York after college (or while) where she meet CLORIS..... (you could have bumped into her, Impressions!)

Yes, Charlotte is from Milwaukee originally. But she moved out well before I was born. It would have been nice to meet her. But I’ve only met Lisa in person. One day I hope to meet the rest.

Wawwie 10-19-2020, 04:48 PM Do any foods remind you of FOL?No, but eating vegetable lasagna reminds me of watching reruns of Quincy. And Earl Grey tea reminds me of Mission Impossible reruns.
RetroGuy2000 10-19-2020, 08:24 PM Did Quincy eat vegetable lasagna?
...Every time I eat bad "Chinese food" I'm reminded of the ovaltine and vinegar monstrosity the girls concocted. And then I'm reminded of how weirdly Mr. Bradly said "Chinese food." And then I'm reminded of the classic Chandler line, "Chinese food, or as the Chinese call it... 'food'."
Luckily, I rarely have bad Chinese.

This dishes are called Homestead Pyrex. My mom used to have a mixing bowl (or maybe bowls), but they disappeared. I think those dishes had been on the set since the first season, not just the later years.
