View Full Version : If you've been here for more than 1-2 years, what keeps you coming back?
Some people seem oblivious to any fights or arguments, and just keep coming back no matter what seems to happen. They seem to affect some people more then others. I wish every fight could be avoided, but that's not always possible. Once the damage is done, it's done. You can't turn back the clock and reverse things.
If you've been here for more than 1-2 years, what are your reasons for still visiting after all this time?
Other than fights, why do you think people would leave message boards after a few years and not say goodbye or anything and just vanish without a trace? Do they just get bored with them, have other interests in life and are too busy, or begin visiting other boards? Or is just general burnout? I guess it happens on other boards with people having large amounts of posts just disappearing one day without a goodbye or an explanation.
Sometimes I think to myself I am getting tired of this and not continue on with the boards, but it would be very hard pulling the plug on them after 3 1/2 years so don't expect that anytime soon. I would probably transfer them over to somebody else before they were ever completely closed.
Maybe the boards need a makeover? New colors maybe? :)

One of the main reasons I come here is for the interraction with other people. I have met some of the coolest, and nicest people here on this site. In the almost two years that Iv'e been here, I don't recall getting into one single argument with a single member. There was a very controversial post on the current events board a few months back that I responded to and got some heat for. Some people even called me names, and accused me of saying things I didn't say, but that was the closest to a fight Iv'e ever been in. I find that if you respect others on these boards, they'll usually respect you in return.
Another reason I love these boards is because they are quite simply the best boards online!!! The only other message board I ever visited that even came close to S.O. was yesterdayland, but unfortunately that site was taken away. There was another board I visited quite frequently, and it was taken away too. Right now, this is currently the only board I visit, and when I'm online I probably spend atleast half of my time here. This site honestly has more variety than any board Iv'e ever seen. I mean what other website has single message boards for almost every tv show, past, or present? Not to mention the chit chat board, the current events board, the sports board, and on and on and on. S.O. in my opinion is the best site ever online, and I hope it never goes away. If it did I'd probably not even have the internet anymore. If S.O. was gone, I would basically be paying $20.00 a month for nothing considering coming here is what I mostly do online.
Another thing that's great about this site is how involved you are TJ. With pretty much every website Iv'e ever visited aside from this one, the owner had very little, if anything to do with the people who were using the board. Those boards would eventually get overtaken by trolls, and trouble makers, and eventually all your friends would leave because the owners wouldn't do anything about them. But there are hardly ever any of those kinds of people here because you are so involved with the site. It feels great to be able to come here without having to worry about those morons giving you a hard time.
As far as why people sometimes leave without any explanation, Iv'e often wondered about that myself. Sometimes I worry that something happened to them, especially if it's someone you considered a friend, and they just disappear. I think there is several possible reasons why people sometimes leave without a trace. For one thing there are alot of young people on these boards who are getting older, going to College, and things like that, and they probably just don't have the free time they use to. Also, maybe the parents take the internet away from the kids for personal, or financial reasons without notice. My parents use to always do that. I would have something I really enjoyed, and I would act up, and they'd take it away from me. That may be why so many of the younger people disappear. Or maybe they felt like I felt a year or so ago, that the computer is controlling there life, and they need to get re aquanted with the real world. Or it could be like you mentioned, just plain burnout. Those would be some of my guesses as to why people suddenly leave without a trace.
Anyway, I just want to honestly thank you TJ for starting these boards, and continuing keeping them going. It's nice to be able to go through a rough day and just be able to come here and relax. I know you spend alot of money to keep the site going, and I know I, for one appreciate it, as I'm sure most others here do to, so thank you!!! :)
animalcrackers 10-26-2003, 09:22 AM Very well said, mdntrider7! SO is basically the only reason I get on the computor anymore. I have never been involved in any agruments here and don't plan to. This site helps relieve any tension in my life. TJ, SO is the best! You have done an excellent job and it isn't said enough. Without SO this computor would just sit here collecting dust. Why so many people have left, and many new ones have, I don't know. I hope SO continues for years to come. Thanks, TJ!

Well I havent been here for a year already, but I guarantee that I will be here for a long time. Anyways, the thing that brings me back is the interaction of friends online, not only to discuss general chit chat, but to discuss TV and a wide range of things. I've been to many message boards, and this, without a doubt, is my favorite one. There's plenty of things to talk about, its not too crowded (ive noticed that when boards get overcrowded, it can get a little crazy), and there are a lot of nice people.
Now, about if the board needs a makeover, I think that could happen. I dont think its boring right now though. But having new colors, or something else new will attract our attention even more.
Kay Scarpetta 10-26-2003, 10:05 AM Hmmm... good question. I don't know, exactly. Some of the posters who have been here since '00 or '01 who have been here since I started may have noticed that these days I don't post 1/4 of what I used to, but that's because I'm so busy with school, homework, clubs, teams, etc.
I may be gone for a few days, or not post much, but I always come back. There are a handful of people here that I've "grown close" to, and basically, it's just fun posting here.
vienna waits 10-26-2003, 10:06 AM The boards are something fun to do when I'm online. I like reading interesting things from the people I know. The fights don't bother me because you kind of have to go looking for them to even know they exist. School keeps me away a lot though.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-26-2003, 10:14 AM I had a different name before this, so I was here for over a year since August 2002. This place is just so awesome, and I've made a lot of good friends here. I've met some awesome people, that truthfully are hard to get to know off of the computer when you're a shy person like me. There's also so many things to talk about where you can find people who share the same interests and that's awesome. I love it here and hope it stays for a long time. :D

I come here because this was the only Chico and the man group that I had found on the internet. Because of Sitcoms Online a few more Chico groups have been established and I have made many friends here who I can relate to. I've even met 2 of my Chico friends in person Thanks to you TJ.
Other then fights, why do you think people would leave message boards after a few years and not say goodbye or anything and just vanish without a trace? Do they just get bored with them, have other interests in life and are too busy, or begin visiting other boards? Or is just general burnout? I guess it happens on other boards with people having large amounts of posts just disappearing one day without a goodbye or an explanation. I've learned in my everyday life that even your so called good friends vanish for no reason. So I would expect this on this board. I guess they move on with their lives. They have other goals and hobbies.
:) Your board is just fine TJ. You've done a wonderful job here! Kudos to you........
I joined Sitcoms Online because a local news story mentioned this site as a good place to discuss Sitcoms, and I was pretty sure my roommate had grown tired of listening to me gripe about Television.
Since then I have met some wonderful people who I have shared opinions with on a variety of subjects. If I have made some people laugh, then that makes me happy and it pushes me to top myself each time I come up with an idea for a post.
I don't post on any other sites, because this is the only one I need to go to.
Actually I'm surprised I've been here so long. I would have thought for sure that I would have gotten bored coming here, like I have with so many other regular websites that I visited over the years, but the interaction with everyone is what keeps me coming back.
I just wish we would all stop bickering and concentrate on the one true foe of every TV viewer out there...
FOX!
;)
Mijada 10-26-2003, 12:22 PM Well I come here for something fun to do. I can talk about things here that my other friends/aquaintences are not interested in. For example I've found Leave it to Beaver fans here as well as a few Fleetwood Mac fans. People like that don't exist outside my online life. I think the main reason people leave these boards apart from getting in fights is that most of them are fairly young and young lives are always changing. They are graduating HS, starting college, getting jobs, boyfriends/girlfriends whatever and just are not interested or don't have time for the boards anymore. Their interests also change after a couple years. When I first started visiting here about every other member on this board was a Facts of Life fan. I hardly see any of those people around now.
Anyway as long as these boards are here I will continue to visit. Even as my life goes through changes and gets busier I will still make the effort to stop in from time to time.
Brian Damage 10-26-2003, 12:29 PM This is the best place to discuss Television shows period. I've made some friends and I'm sure I've made some enemies, but overall I would like to think I've been somewhat a model citizen. ;)
Initially, I didn't come here to make friends, but over the past year or so I have and I think it's great.
-*Forever*- 10-26-2003, 12:33 PM I originally came here just for Gillian's Island stuff and didn't have any friends. Everyone thought I was a bitch cos I was only nice to the members with more posts, cos I thought they were the "most popular" and I wanted to fit in. I left for a year and came back when I got my own computer. That was when I decided to post on TCFF and I met Sean and Kristina that summer. Since then, I have made many, many other friends. Half of them are better friends than the people who live around here. I just love it here and I don't know what I would do without SO.
Brian 10-26-2003, 12:51 PM I come here because this is the only place where I have friends. Another reason is that I come here when I'm bored and have nothing to do. I can never take a break from the boards because it's just so addicting. I don't know why it is addicting but it just is. Even most of the people who say they're going to leave end up coming back anyways.
Titania 10-26-2003, 01:12 PM I've been here since 2000 and although I have left a few times and sometimes don't have time to post very often, I think what keeps me coming back are the people who aren't causing the fights- it's a good place to take a break from work and life and just see what's going on. I guess I've gotten sort of attached to this place over the years, even though so few people are still around from the old days.
Lots of memories here- from the FOL invasion, :jar: , quizzes, mafias, random threads, and yes even the pointless fights.
[-Kelsey-] 10-26-2003, 01:20 PM Black background would be nice the white hurts my eyes! :(
 Besides that I don't think I have been in major fights but SO is like the only reason I go on the computer now:D
I keep coming back because it's great to talk with people who have the same interests as I do. I've also have a group of friends here, who would hunt me down and beat me up if I left. :D
[-Kelsey-] 10-26-2003, 01:24 PM Also a new picture on top of the Happy Days borad would be nice :D
Mysty Eyes 10-26-2003, 01:39 PM I found this place via a reference from someone else. I don't even know if he posts here anymore; I never knew his user name.
Why do I stay?
Like Sitcoms themselves, this place is easy to come back to. The boards are entertaining, fights and all. True, I try to steer clear of the bickering because... hey, life is tough enough as it is. But all life is tainted by bickering, so... A slightly dysfunctional family, perhaps? The fighting escapes my notice for the most part.
Actually, I am one of the older folks here. I like the interaction with the younger members, even if it is simply by reading their thoughts. When I can add my "sage wisdom" (heh!), I do. That doesn't happen too often. ;)
I also like to visit the boards for the older sitcoms, many of which I watched first-run and now see in reruns. Sometimes I can add to the flavor of the show by addressing the "current day" view of those shows.
I dunno... changing the look? Nothing too bright, please. Old eyes, y'know.
*Marilyn Monroe* 10-26-2003, 01:49 PM SO is my favorite website/message board/anything online. I came here because I searched for "The Facts of Life" or "The Division" and this came up. The TD board is still the main reason I come here, to learn all the news. I love watching the new people come in, and take over. I really don't think there's much that I'd change about this, TJ. I think it's great that you are so involved, though.
InspectorExstead 10-26-2003, 02:03 PM I keep coming back because of all the cool people on here. You've given us a chance to get together, without any hassles. i think it's great that there's so many boards, one for practically every show. it really is a lot of fun.
maybe the people who disappear for a while, are really busy. that's what it's like for me. i know this is such a clique, but, there's really not enough hours in the day for me.
i don't really think the board needs a "new face." i've gotten so used to it being the way it is. plus, there was a message board i would go to, who would completely re-do theirs every other week, and we'd all have to keep re-registering. (not fun)
Ewan's My Man 10-26-2003, 02:23 PM I just love these boards. Whenever I sign on the internet I always go into my favorites list and click on SitcomsOnline (it's at the top btw :p) and even if I don't look around for another hour, I always haveta at LEAST have it minimized at the bottom of the screen. I have met so many people here, that actually understood my FOL obsession!!!
For the people who leave without saying goodbye, they might be having trouble making time to get on. Who knows what's going on with their lives. I know I've been having more trouble getting on here since I started high school, but I make an effort to at least get on.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 10-26-2003, 03:39 PM I love it here. Ive been caught between fights and such, but Id never leave because of it. I first came to this board looking for Happy Days episodes and then I joined Pats Trivia. SO is my favorite place to come online, even if I complain about things sometimes :o. I remember the night (Chad should too) when you were messing around with all the colors and everything. I think new colors would be nice, but keep the background neutral- I dont want to be blinded. Ive made tons of great friends on here and I thank TJ for it.:yourock:
Czas na Zywiec 10-26-2003, 03:42 PM The colors aren't blinding. If you remake it, keep the shades of gray. They're easiest on the eyes.

PZelda 10-26-2003, 03:58 PM SO is such a wonderful place to be. I can post about my fave shows and make friends with other people that like the other shows I like. I originally registered to post at the Mama's Family board (THANK YOU, TJ! There's almost zero Mama's Family boards on the internet), but as time went on, I broadened my horizons and found CC and the other boards. :D
I don't mind the colors, but they're pretty standard, so a slight change would be nice. :)

b) They felt like they didn't fit in and had no friends, so they just leave, or all their friends left so they followed.
c) Sick of board politics.

I wish there weren't any fights but I just ignore them. I don't have enough time to read everything here so why waste it by reading and responding to the negativity. Life's too short.
If you've been here for more then 1-2 years, what are your reasons for still visiting after all this time?
I like sharing my opinions about lots of different topics and "hearing" what others have to say about it. I can discuss things I don't get the opportunity to do otherwise. In general, the people here are a fun, interesting group.

Sometimes I think to myself I am getting tired of this and not continue on with the boards, but it would be very hard pulling the plug on them after 3 1/2 years so don't expect that anytime soon. I would probably transfer them over to somebody else before they were ever completely closed.
Since I don't say it enough, thanks for creating Sitcoms Online!!

I like them just the way they are. But if you do make changes, please, please keep the background a light shade and the text black. I really don't like boards that have black backgrounds. It's too much for my eyes.
Lucylover22 10-27-2003, 09:18 PM I love it here. I like the people,(except the trouble makers), I like the boards; I basically like everything here!

I find the people really nice. :D
I've been here for over 2 1/2 years, and I have no intention of leaving ;) I don't know, I just love how there are so many good conversations going on at once - there are people I agree with everything on, and there are people I disagree with everything on. I don't think I've ever had any real fights (constant battles on the politics board, but that's perfectly normal ;) ) I just love it here. People will talk about anything - if one of us needs cheering up or to be wished luck or congratulated - we're all here for each other

If you've been here for more then 1-2 years, what are your reasons for still visiting after all this time?I like the easy going ness of staff here... They arent mean like they are on CD and this place is much nicer...... (I would like it to be like this more often! (Faster,no time outs))
People should not let what ppl say online bother them, its stupid...... Its just words on your screen.. Its not like they are crank calling you,etc.......
Caroline13 10-07-2024, 03:16 PM I qualify for being here more than 2 yrs and to be honest it was Dude who planted me here, I would not have joined a group that has so much passion for hollywood......i live a little over 10 miles from the heart of hollywood and pretty much avoid it all. But I've enjoyed tv and movies and concerts etc but NOT my passion as MOST here seem to be with it all.
Now I seem to stay as I had hoped for some In Depth discussions on what is going on in the world, and my passion is if I had one is GOOD HEALTH.
As for governing our country -- we need governance but NEED honest leaders aka politicians...and TJ has said he does not like one or the other or both, we live in the Best country in the world.....
So I have to believe TJ has a tiny tiny bit of fondness for me or I would not be here......
I post less and less and do in general in the whole scheme o f it all...

There is a lot of the past that we don't benefit by dwelling on things, we don't forget as the past is a major part of our lives....
There is an awful lot of general stuff we can add to since we are all gaining more info....
Dude111 10-08-2024, 11:15 PM I cant believe all the good stuff I have found on this base alone Carole!!!!!!
