Does anyone know who this person is?? Fred and Lamont reference her at least two times on the series. I think she was some kind of famous reporter or newspaper columist at some time. If anyone has any info on LA history of the 1970's maybe they could help.

Hi, I'm new to the board. To answer your question, Gertrude Gibson was a gossip/society columnist for the Los Angeles Sentinel which is a black owned newspaper during that time. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I looked up the LA Sentinel but could not find anything about her.

She may have died, and that is why you didn't find anything on her. But I know for sure she had a column in that paper, which may no longer exist in the paper. :)

Some of the names Fred references to are real names. Such as: Hallie Sallasser...Yule Gibbons....Spiro T. Agnew...Gertrude Gibson.

I always assumed what Lamont was saying was "J. Rue Perot", and while that could well be a real person's name, I suspect it's not, as the topical humor often referenced real names (as noted above) the made up character names normally did not. A big exception here would be Redd Foxx's friends from the night club and vaudeville years, where character names were real or stage names.
Can't give any figures, but the name J. Rue Perot appeared in more than a couple of episodes, I suspect. It was the name Lamont used to dress up his image before the ladies, and whoever else he wanted to impress.
Example: in the episode where Fred started seeing a woman who had some years before dated Lamont, she didn't make the connection between Fred and Lamont because Lamont had given her a different name:
"Who'd he say he was? Superfly?"
"No, he said he was J. Rue Perot"

I remember the name Yule Gibbons mentioned on the episode where Esther entered the beauty contest, Fred mentioned that if he could improve Esther he could turn Yule Gibbons into a meatloaf freak.
Was Yule Gibbons a famous vegetarian or something?

I remember Yule Gibbons from the 70's doing commercials for I think Grape Nuts cereal.

I think your right. I have asked several people and they have no idea of who J. Rue Perot is. :)
