Raven-Symone: Sassy at 17
At 17, Raven-Symone is nearly an adult woman. But many folks still think of this former child star as little Olivia from The Cosby Show. "I was on that show from 3 to 6 years old," she tells TV Guide Online. "I didn't know what was going on. I was just happy to be on television with Rudy (Keshia Knight Pulliam). And to be able to go to the Hello Kitty store and get whatever I wanted! That was my dream."
These days, she stars as a psychic teen on Disney Channel's That's So Raven, currently in its second season. She also has two Disney films in the works for 2004: All American Girl — "It's about a girl who saves the president" — and a remake of the '70s movie-musical Sparkle. But she's most proud of a more mundane achievement; the home-schooled actress graduated high school about five weeks ago.
"My wonderful behind-the-scenes people on the Raven set threw a party for me," she recalls. "There was a big chocolate cake and a white chocolate diploma. I was really happy!"
FYI, Raven wants to give a shout out to remind us that Saturday is Make A Difference Day. It's a nationwide charitable effort supported by celebs from singer Amy Grant to Paul Newman. "On Oct. 25, we're trying to get everybody to help others," she enthuses. "Volunteer or just give somebody a compliment. Little things like that can make somebody's day. I'm going to the Dream Halloween carnival in Santa Monica, Calif., benefiting children affected by AIDS. I'm gonna be Jessica Rabbit! I'll wear a red wig and a red sequined gown with a big old slit up it, and white gloves to be fabulous."
What? A sexy sequined gown for lil' Olivia? Oh, no she didn't. "Oh, yes she did!" Raven laughs. "People don't want to let me grow up. I have lots of big brother fans and a lot of mama fans that think I'm they're little daughter. But that's okay."
