Jim Carrey to star in Six Million Dollar Man Remake

NEW YORK — Jim Carrey will star in a film based on the '70s TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, to be written and directed by Todd Phillips, Dimension Films announced.

"The teaming of Jim and Todd is a perfect creative combination to launch the Six Million Dollar Man franchise, Dimension Films co-chairman Bob Weinstein said in a statement Tuesday. "Todd is a director with proven instincts and Jim is a superstar."

According to the studio, "the combination of Carrey and Phillips led to a fresh, hilarious take on the potential franchise."

Lee Majors starred as Col. Steve Austin in the action-adventure series, which ran from 1974-78.

Phillips directed Old School and Road Trip, and is now working on the movie version of Starsky & Hutch.

Carrey's films include Bruce Almighty, The Truman Show and Man on the Moon.

I heard about that - it's gonna happen. Tim Burton's gonna direct it. For my favorite director... well, we'll see what happens. Why do I have the feeling it's gonna be nothing like the Gene Wilder version?

The least I can hope for is that this time around they'll stick closer to the book (I won't get my hopes up though).

I for one, am super upset over the upcoming remake of Harold & Maude. That's my #1 movie of all time & no way is any remake gonna surpass it. More proof that Hollywood has literally run outta ideas.

I guess the only thing good about it is the fact that since the original *is* such a cult favorite, & it's bound to be compared to the 1st one, it'll be impossible for it to actually "replace" the original & will only emphasize how good it is.

Sonny (mr roper) mentioned The Six Million Dollar Man over on the CC board, and yeah, I think it sucks. But hey, you can't stop Hollywood from touching just about everything out there so..

This is so dumb! Why in the world can't people in Hollywood use their imagination? Are they running out of ideas, that they have to make movies out of old TV shows? This is ridicules! My fiancé asked me if you guys remember movies being made to promote TV shows back in the 70's.

I agree, Jenya! I hate remakes with a passion, even with the few good ones that I've seen. Really though, what I hate is that Hollywood only thinks about all the money they can bring in. No originality, no allowing a classic to be left alone. "Charlie's Angels was popular, let's make it into a movie!!" They're doing Starsky and Hutch, Dallas, 21 Jump Street for crying out loud, among others.

I was just a kid in the late 70s, so I don't have any memories of that. I kinda doubt it, though.

It's true though. Next thing they'll do is "remake" Sesame Street!

I can already see Gordon, Maria & Big Bird in all black leather doing Matrix kicks...

One remake that didnt quite work out was "I- Spy" w/ Eddie Murphy. Shows it's not an infallible formula. A good thing for Harold & Maude IMO.

I didn't like I-Spy, either.

Well they made one out of the muppet show, They would probably try Sesame Street.

I've heard about rumors of a remake for several years, but Jim Carrey and Todd Phillips?! Couldn't they get a contemporary action hero-type actor? I know Jude Law is supposed to replace Pierce Brosnon as James Bond, so he'd be too busy for a project like this.

What's wrong with dramas? Why does hollywood have to remake everything as a comedy? Granted- I can see the jokes now that Jim Carrey will do with the film- but couldn't they just leave the title and character's alone. Doing this prevents a proper Six Million Dollar Man remake, as a proper drama/action-as it was. They'd be better of just ripping of the plot, and changing the title- they're using the title just to make some extra money- like alot of remakes- nothing like the originals.
This will probably mean that there will be a Bionic Woman film- regardless of this films success (all of carrey's films seem to be at least moderately succesfful)- so, who do you think will be the bionic woman?
2004 will be the start of a long line of butchered tv show remakes. Let us pray- pray that movie executives will overlook MASH and all the other classics. Any predictions of which tv shows will be remade next?

As long as they don't remake Rocky Horror, I'm happy.

TV show remakes are so fun! I also enjoyed the Texas Chainsaw remake...and I can't wait for the Stepford Wives! Remakes are sometimes cool to see but a lot of times are horrid.

Rocky Horror's survived- but almost 2 years ago fox did announce a remake directed by Stephan Elliott- but they never spoke of it again (even though fans did) so it's just seemed to have died. It was meant to be out februrary this year, then Halloween- looks like it's not happening now. But someday it probably will. I'd rather just see Richard O'Brien get his new rocky horror sequel stage show up and running followed by a movie- something original.

I don't get this last Line, Mash was a movie before it was a tv show, so technically the tv show was a remake.

yeah, but if you know Hollywood - nothing is sacred. We were talking about if they tried to do a movie of "Courtship of Eddie's Father" how that would be a movie, based on a tv show, based on a movie...

Remember, they made a remake of Annie, which means it was a movie, based on an earlier movie, based on a musical, based on a comic strip, based on a radio show, based on a poem :rolleyes:

I know MASH was a movie before a tv show- but the film and show were very different things- a remake of the TV show would be the worst thing that could happen- but a movie remake would be kinda bad too.

Chicago was a bit complicated too- Roxie Hart was a movie too, it had been made into short black and white films several times, original play by a reporter covering similar events, then Bob Fosse made it into a musical show.
Then there was Little Shop of Horrors and a few other things too.
