While watching the episode where Joanie smoked, I noticed that Erin Moran looked like she knew what she was doing as far as holding a cigarette, etc. Do you think she was just a good actress, or do you think she was really a smoker???

I noticed on tv that Tom Bosley smoked, & probably did for years, & so did Henry Winkler. It would be so ironic if Erin Moran were the only one that actually didnt smoke. I wonder if the episode convinced anyone to quit.

Erin was a smoker & not a bad actress either.:)

I dont smoke, but I noticed that she really wasnt smoking per se, she blew the smoke almost inmediately(from what Ive heard, you have to hold up the smoke a little and then blow it) JMO though, I just think she was a good actress.

This explains why he looked SO much older than he actually was. The 70s were a different time. That also explain the black T-Shirt years why he gained weight. He most likely quit smoking and the extra weight always happens after you quit smoking. I always thought you gained weight because your used to putting something in your mouth but it's because cigarettes kill your taste buds on your tongue. Stop smoking, and the taste buds return and now food suddenly has MUCH MORE Flavor than your used to which causes the weight gain - or so I am told.

It's a behind the scenes pic. Fonz NEVER smoked on camera. Look at Henry's Jeans, classic 70s style. It was during rehearsals.

I'm reading Garry Marshall's autobiography (My Happy Days in Hollywood) right now. He was a heavy smoker in those days. Perhaps he gave Erin some pointers on how to make her smoking look realistic on camera!

The thing that no one understands is that when you smoke, you just look SO COOL DOING IT! Not to mention all the other benefits that come along with it. The bad breathe, yellow teeth and finger nails, wrinkles. And if you smoke long enough (and stay alive) the bonus feature of having your skin and face look like and old catchers mitt! :happyface

Restaurants didn't have smoking sections, you could just light up anywhere. People smoked in their offices, in waiting rooms, and everywhere that didn't have a rare "no smoking" sign. Kids frequently smoked. Store clerks were not as diligent as they are now regarding minors smoking, and if they were, you could go to a vending machine to buy smokes. It was a different time and a different way of life.

When I was a kid, I could go the store and buy cigarettes for my Mom. Never touched 'em myself, but I could easily buy them.

I did the same thing. I went to the store and bought a few for my Mom a few times. Nobody ever stopped me and I never smoked. I have asthma and never would touch the stuff.

At my HS ( and this was in the early 80's) they had a smoking area just for students who smoked. It was going all over at my school. It was no big deal then.

LOL! My high school had the same set up. It's weird, I grew up with a chain smoking dad, so I know our house must have stunk to high heaven when I was a kid. As an adult, the smell of smoke nauseates me unless I am smoking myself.

I'm glad that restaurants and bars no longer allow smoking. It sucked to go out for a night of fun and come home reeking of smoke. I do wish that I was back at my smoker's weight though, but not enough to start up again. I supervise a lot of 20 somethings and roughly 75% of them are regular smokers. It breaks my heart, but most of them need the nicotine buzz and they are terrified of getting fat. :(

I can remember the 70's too when I was a kid and there were no safe guards at all. TRUE. I HATED going to a resturaunt and smoke everywhere. It was disgusting trying to eat and offensive. If you watch and old movie on TV and see someone smoking in a HOSPITAL it;s so freakin weird? It's shocking to think they'd allow smoking in a hospital of all places? I spoke to someone much older than me, and asked them, did people really not know how bad smoking was before the surgeon general? He said, of course they knew. People weren't idiots, it was just more socially acceptable back in the day.
