View Full Version : Past Lives Lost: A Halloween Story
#1_Nancy_McKeon 10-23-2003, 06:15 PM I thought I'd do a Halloween story this year since I planned on doing one last year, but it never happened. Here it goes...
-----------------------------------------------
A cool breeze was blowing over the bay area. The weather person on the local news channel had said there was a likely chance of rain, but so far the luck had been good for all the pre-trick-or-treaters that were going to be out tonight.
“Honey!” a woman tries to get the attention of her daughter whom was dressed as a witch. Instead the little girl continues to stand in front of another woman’s cart staring at her.
“Honey!” the lady says again, and leaves her own cart as she moves over and takes her daughters hand. “I’m sorry.” The blonde mother says, “I don’t know what’s gotten into her. Come on, Heather.”
“It’s fine…” Jinny answers as she watches the woman pull her daughter away.
“She has a gun!” the little girl tells her mother.
The blonde turns to look back at the woman in the dark clothing.
Luckily, Jinny had overheard the little girl’s statement, “I’m a cop.”
Nodding the lady takes that as a reasonable explanation and continues dragging her child back to her own cart.
Pushing her cart containing a few bags of candy resting in the child’s seat, and several frozen dinners in the main portion of it down the produce aisle Jinny’s eyes scan over the various fruits and vegetables, and soon stumble across a stack of large pumpkins marked 50% off. Since today was Halloween the store was trying to get rid of the remaining ones. Her eyes remain on the pumpkins, her mind making a mental note of the ones that her family used to buy. Although now she had no use for them, or any need for them like she did as a child. She and her brother had to have one when they were younger otherwise it wasn’t like Halloween. In fact, the Exstead’s were always the first ones on their block to have a lit jack-o-lantern on their porch when it began approaching Halloween time. Once finished Jinny nears the check out counter as the cell phone in her jacket pocket begins to ring.
A knock on the door made C.D. stand up from her position on the couch where she had been talking on the telephone.
“Gimme a second.” She replies to the person on the other line as she reaches for the doorknob a smile still on her face, “Trick-or-treat!” several children’s voices ring out, she had hardly gotten the door open. Not to mention having forgotten what tonight was… she normally wouldn’t have opened the door, but her conversation had her temporarily not thinking.
“Ooh…” she looks down to all the little faces that were enthusiastically looking up at her waiting for their treats so they could get on their way to the next apartment.
“Trick-or-treat.” The tallest says again once not getting a motion out of C.D. quick enough.
“Trick-or-treat?” the blonde questions. “It’s not even six yet…”
“So?” one of the children ask pushing his bag out.
She turns around to look out the opened blinds of her window, “It’s not even dark yet!”
C.D. was answered with yet another, “So?”
“What happened to it being dark before kids come out? I thought it was like a tradition or something.”
They all shrug looking around to each other.
“Aren’t you going to give us something?”
“Uhh…” she looks around, “It’s trick-or-treating. How about a trick instead? Anyone have a quarter?”
“No.”
The children were getting restless with this apartment, and already a couple had strolled off, but still three kept their positions.

----------------------------------------------
The children were getting restless with this apartment, and already a couple had strolled off, but still three kept their positions.
“Okay…” she looked down at them. “Give me a second.” Closing her door behind her temporarily C.D. made her way to the cupboard, and then soon returned to even more faces at her door. She’d left her phone on the table near the door.
“Here we go.” She announces, “Put out your bags.” They all did what they were told, “Top Ramon Noodles.” She shook in front of one child and then dropped into their bag. “Red Bull Energy Drink!” she over exaggerated her enthusiasm with each ‘treat’. “A…a…” she looks to the object next in her arms, “Chocolate cake mix!” dropping that in a little girls bag she turns to the other two children that had migrated to her door when she was gone, “Give me a moment…” putting her finger up she grabs her bag near the door, and shuffles around inside and takes out two object, “A pack of cinnamon gum for Yoooouu.” She nods enthusiastically as she puts it in the kid’s bag, “And a half a thing of orange tic-tacs for you.” She soon closes the door, and picks her phone back from the small table, “Nate…” C.D. pauses for a moment, “Remind me not to answer the door again.” She laughs at what the man on the other line says, “Yeah, whatever happened to all the original Halloween costumes. Like witches, and ghosts? All the kids that were at my door I couldn’t tell you what they were supposed to be.” Chuckling, “Yeah, I’m out of it. Oh wait a minute I have another call.”
The strong lights above the mirror in the master bathroom shed bright light across Ben’s face that his mother was cradling from beneath his chin, “Hold still, Benjamin.”
“I am…” the child struggles to say without moving his chin much.
Carefully Magda continues to smear the white make-up over the edges of her son’s face. Out of the corner of his eye Ben keeps a glimpse of the progress in the mirror. Soon his Mother drops her hand from his face and begins using it instead as a palette for the white make-up as she smears more across Ben’s face with her fingertips, “You’re going to be a great vampire, Papi.”
“Really?” her son asks enthusiastically as he tries to inch his head a little to the side so he could further see himself in the mirror.
“Definitely.” Magda continues to blend the pasty white make-up on his face, “Hold still.”
“I am. I am.”
Soon the make-up was all applied to his face, and Magda went on to her own.
Blotting a red dot at the side of her lip Magda continues to keep an eye on what her son was doing.
“I need blooood!!” Ben admits as he studies himself in the mirror. He’d been standing on a small stool he had used when he was much younger to reach the sink, but this time his Mother had used it so he was closer to his height so she could better apply his make-up.
“I told you, Papi.” His Mother begins, “The blood will come once you finish your hair, and put on the cape.” She continues on to the other side of her face after painting a little red over her nose.
“Fine.” He brings the comb back to his hair after wetting it, “I need you to part it for me, Mom.” He studies her in the mirror, “What are you supposed to be again?” the kid wrinkles his nose.
“Raggedy Ann, Benjamin.” Magda turns to her son, and takes the comb from his hand.
“I don’t know what that is.”
Once quickly making a clean part she bends down and gets a can of hair spray from the cupboard beneath the sink, “Close your eyes.” She instructs as she begins spraying.
“I hate this…” his eyes were tightly closed.
“Keep your mouth closed.” And several seconds later she was done.
Smacking his lips together Ben makes a disgusted face, “I can taste it.”
“I’m sorry, Ben.” Magda licks one of her clean fingertips and touches it to a piece of his hair that still stood at attention.
Making a face, “Ewwww!!”
“I’m sorry… Go run and get your cape, and your…” she widens her eyes more as she says the next part, “Fangs!!” laughing.
Ben laughs as he jumps down from the small stool and moves out of the bathroom as the phone begins to ring.
“Can you grab that for me, Ben?” his mother calls from the bathroom.

Feet on the coffee table and his body reclined on his couch Nate sat watching ‘Frankenstein’ on TV. The first time he’d watched it he had slept with his parents for two weeks. Scared him to death, but now here he sat all grown up, alone, in the dark watching it. A sudden beep from the microwave brings him to look in the direction of the kitchen then back to the television for another minute. Finally Nate stands and heads for his hot awaiting TV dinner.
Both hands full the man begins back to take his vacant seat on the couch when his telephone rings. Looking to the food and drink in his hands he hurries for his coffee table, and sits it down and sets off to find where he left his phone.
After a knock on the door of Captain’s office Raina’s grinning face peeks inside dangling earrings with little orange pumpkins swing from her ears, “I come barring gifts.” She states referring to the Styrofoam cups in each of her hands.
Leaning over the woman’s desk Raina hands one of the coffees to Kate’s awaiting hand.
She then realizes something isn’t right by the look on her superior’s face, “What’s wrong, Captain?” she questions sincerely and sits.
“Aww, Amanda.” Kate takes a sip of her coffee with the shake of her hand, “She and Jill are coming in tonight, and I wanted to be home to meet them.”
“Then why aren’t you?”
“We’re low on Patrol. It’s going to be a busy night.”
Raina’s face wrinkles, “Why?” sitting up in her seat, “Just cause it’s Halloween? Captain, it’s just like every other night of the year.”
“Yeah, just like every other night of the year, you’re right, Raina. With a few exceptions.”
“Like?” the Inspector was anxious to hear her reasoning.
Leaning back in her seat, “For one all the ‘Halloween Innuendo’.” She begins, “Of what ‘Halloween’ is to people. Sure, to children it’s a night to go door to door dressed in costumes and get candy for free.” She looks at the young woman in front of her, “But for young adults it’s another story. It’s a night to reek havoc and do things you wouldn’t necessarily always do.” Her voice trails off cynically, “Just because it’s Halloween.”
Raina nods, “I understand.”
“Not to mention the higher extent of population on residential streets compared to any other night of the year.” Kate sips her coffee, “It’s going to be a busy night.”
Nodding, “Yeah,” a small grin moves across Raina’s face, “I remember this one night when we were in High School the day after Halloween we got back to school and the whole place…” she was giggling now, “Had messages written to all the teachers in florescent lip stick on their windows.”
Watching the woman’s expressions throughout that little story Kate answers only with, “Vandalizing.” She watches Raina’s now more serious face look in her direction, “I rest my case.”
Standing the African American turns for the door, “Well some of the messages were funny.”
Shaking her head Captain McCafferty only watches the young Inspector leave, without closing her door. Soon she was back to work awaiting the arrival of her overtime for tonight.

Pushing the double doors of the Felony Division Bullpen open was C.D. followed closely behind by Nate. The two had met in the lobby, and taken the elevator up together. Ok, heck, the truth is known Nate had arrived first, and waited for his blonde partner to arrive.
“Hey Guys.” Raina looks up from a paper in front of her, “You’re the overtime Patrol Captain called in?” she questions. Scanning both of their clothes for some inkling that it was Halloween Raina finally gives up. If she didn’t know what today was she’d just think it was any other night. Both Inspectors wore their usual coats… nothing out of the ordinary. Although, why did she really expect anything? Still she had to look… all day… every Holiday she watched everyone that came through the door to see if she could spot one thing that revealed what Holiday it was. Too bad she worked at such a place where most no one ever did.
Stopping to the side of the Inspector’s desk, “Oh, please no.” C.D. looks to her partner then back at the woman, “I don’t know. All she told us was it was urgent, and we’d get overtime for it.”
“Ooooh…” Raina’s eyes bulged. Dammit she did it again. She let the cat out of the bag. What should she do? Um, yes, deny it. “Well maybe she has something else for you to do.” She giggles slightly nervous, “You know me, I never know what Captain is going to do.” It may not sound all too convincing, but would they really doubt her to her face? She thought not.
“I guess we’ll just have to say.” Nate places the palm of his hand to the blonde’s lower back so she’d further go to her own desk.
Looking to her partner, “I so hope it’s not Patrol.” She groans.
“I know.” He says sincerely as he now moves to his desk across from C.D.’s, “By the way, Raina, nice earrings.”
“Ooh!” Raina turns and grins at the man, reaching up with one hand she gives her right earring a little push, “I love them!”
“Yeah,” C.D. replies as she takes off her coat, “Real Halloween…ish.” Looking to her partner, “Is that a word?”
Nate couldn’t help but laugh, “I sounded convincing.” He unbuttons the few buttons on the front of his coat, and pulls his coat apart in front.
Glancing up from moving a few case files aside on her desk C.D. couldn’t help but laugh, “What is that?” she was pointing now.
“What’s what?” the man asks casually as he further rests his jacket on the back of his chair and takes a seat.
“That sweater!”
“Ooh, this old thing.” Nate looks down and pulls it out so he could see it a little himself, “I used to wear it every year on Halloween. Like a little…” he couldn’t think of the word.
“Tradition.”
Raina’s head had whipped around when she heard talk of a Halloween tradition and sees what the two were speaking of.
“Exactly.” He nods, “A tradition.”
“Very nice shirt, Nate!” Raina gives him a thumbs up, “Finally someone that shows what day it is around here. I watch everyone that comes in the door, but hardly ever see anything out of the ordinary.”
“I’m so sorry I bore you, Raina.” C.D. says with a chuckle as she stands up to head for the coffee machine.
“It’s just…” the woman begins, “People need to get a little more lively.” She stands, “I mean look at me.” This was the first time the two Inspectors could see her entire outfit.
“Well get ‘ello to this.” Nate laughs seeing the bottom of her black sweatshirt was lined with little jack o lanterns, and her original lace up black shoes with black laces had been exchanged for pumpkin orange laces.
C.D. turns to see what her partner was talking about, “Oh that’s great.” She laughs, “You’re certainly into the Holidays.”
“Please…” Raina plays it off as she sits still facing the two Inspectors, “They’re the only days of the year that I can express my creativity through the way I dress.”
“Oh, you mean how you dress already isn’t you being creative, and over the top?” came a voice from behind her.
Turning the African American sees Jinny, the doors just closing behind her, her duffle bag still swung over her shoulder, and a grocery bag in her hand.
“Nooo it isn’t.”
“Wow.” Jinny widens her eyes as a silent gesture to C.D. whom was now standing by her own desk with a cup of coffee in hand.
The Inspectors soon all settle down and take their seats again, and silently review papers that had accumulated on their desks while they hadn’t been there until they got their orders from the Captain.
Again the doors of the Division are pulled open as yet another Inspector enters. Looking up from one of her papers Raina is dumbfounded and just stares.
“Please…” Magda raises her hands defensively in front of her as she drops her bag into her chair. Her hair tightly back in a ponytail, but that wasn’t the bad part. The part that stuck out was that it was dyed fire engine red, and she still had some make-up on her face.
Turning once hearing her partner’s voice Jinny stops for a moment, “Nice do.” she gets up and moves to her partner’s side.
“Ben wanted me to dress up this year.”
“Okay.” Jinny nods cautiously.
Hitting her partner’s arm softly, “Stop it. Just wait until you have kids, Jinny.”
“Yeah, you do that.” The brunette now moves her hand slowly to her Partner’s hair.
“Stop it.” Magda shoos her away.
“Raggedy Ann.” A voice says from the side.
All the women look to Nate, “What?” his partner asks.
“Raggedy Ann.” Nate says again. The attention then goes from him to Magda.
Chuckling, “Yeah, you’re right.”
“Awww… One more for Nate!” he says leaning back in his seat.
C.D. chuckles, “Just ignore him guys. He can’t help it. It’s his ego showing through.”
“Don’t worry.” Jinny cracks, “We always do.” She shoots Nate a little grin- letting him know they were joking, as she moves back to her desk.
“What’s this?”
“What?” the brunette looks up to see ‘Raggedy Ann’ next to her, “What’s what?”
“This…” Magda pulls the grocery bag full of assorted candy up from Jinny’s desk.
Watching her partner drop the bag again Jinny nods, “That… I bought that. I thought I’d… have a little candy just in case I got some kids tonight.” She felt awkward saying it, but she felt like giving this year.
“Is this the same Jinny I know?”
“Yes… I just had a little extra money, and…”
“The same Jinny that vowed last year, and every year you wouldn’t feed other people’s children?”
“Well I figured if I got some trick or treaters it’d be nice to have something. Besides… I was just going to give them one piece each. So I had a lot left over and...”
“You’re getting soft, my friend.”
She shakes her head, “I’m not getting soft.”
“You are…” Magda was interrupted.
“Speaking of soft…” Nate says from the side, “Is that a bag of Three Musketeers I see in there?”
